@MrsFitzwilliam I would go but practise good hand hygiene. But I would go soon while there are few cases.

Awkward1 · 09/03/2020 11:03

That credit link is concerning.
Release prisoners.
Yes they would close parliament if they have a case but expect us to send kids in after one!

usernameishistory · 09/03/2020 11:03

I've not seen it here specifically, other than talk generally, so I don't think youve missed anything, someone else may come along to say otherwise, as i have also had to miss chunks.

It will be a business as usual message from the Cobra meeting , I’m sure of it. Perhaps with a “we encourage all citizens over 60 and HCP to minimise social contact”.

The collapse in the share market today will scare them into prioritising the economy.

Think COBRA is at 11.00.

burntpinky · 09/03/2020 11:04

Thankfully we have a huge garden nowhere near neighbours my DC can run around in. I’m going to ask to WFH. Will go in today/tomorrow to print up enough stuff to let me do my job from home for several weeks. Am also going to keep my DC at home as mother in law not taking it seriously and can’t rely on her to wash hands etc. If that means making up hours when DC goes to sleep for the evening then so be it

User- it's exactly what pps said. People just think it doesn't apply to them. Especially when it's family. Because it's "the other" who is dirty and disease ridden, not me (that kind of thing)

The prison riots are a case in point- the wives of the prisoners on TV mouthing off and abusing reporters and prison staff. Why should they be prevented from visiting their husbands?

On the news last night lots of interviews with the people getting on the trains out of Milan, and the prevailing sentiment seemed "I'm going home because I want to be with my family" Which is understandable, we'd all want that. But obviously wrong.

SirVixofVixHall · 09/03/2020 11:06

Mrs Fitzwilliam - in your case I would hand over to the secretary.

ofwarren · 09/03/2020 11:07

Me too Mrs Fitzwilliam
I wouldn't risk meeting with the staff members and would hand to the secretary. I would put a note in with it.

Orangeblossom78 · 09/03/2020 11:08

So..just a thought with the self isolation, I wonder if people with symptoms maybe would not report them due to fear of being told to self isolate / stigma etc. I'm not talking about myself here btw, but just in general.

i mean that would be a risk right? Amongst the general public. Or they might just think it was a cold / bug and convince themselves that

About the zoonotic transfer...

As a PP said - zoonotic transfer is actually how we get most viruses.

All of the following viruses have jumped to humans from various animals:

  • Influenza (flu), all types including the common seasonal flu, swine flu, avian/bird flu
  • Marburg virus (closely linked to Ebola and 90% mortality rate)
  • Ebola
  • HIV/AIDS
  • Hendra virus (Australia)
  • Nipah virus (South East Asia)

And others too...including some weird and wonderful viruses from parrots kept as pets.

It's a very well known phenomenon in the scientific community and there is nothing unusual about it.

The 'next big one' in terms of viruses is always going to be something that jumps to humans from animals/birds that we have no immunity to. Once this pandemic is over it will be back to a case of waiting for the next one which could theoretically happen at any point in time. In fact we are to expect new zoonotic viruses on an increasing regular basis since we keep encroaching more and more into areas with wildlife and come into closer contact and/or bring domestic animals including farm animals into closer contact with wildlife they would not naturally have ever met (they then become a bridge from the wildlife to us).

We won't hear anything more about the reservoir species of the virus for some time as the research needed takes a long time involving trapping and testing thousands of animals near the source of the outbreak.

If anyone is interested in knowing more about zoonotic viruses I really can't recommend the book 'Spillover' enough.

shanghai just to clarify, was it you that said doors were taped up of known infected families, or maybe I've seen that somewhere else.
That infractions brought serious consequences, jail, and shootings?

Or is it just me got this impression.

The point of closing Parliament is that they are worried that they will become 650 superspreaders.

They all sit very closely in Parliament and then 650 of them return to every single corner of the UK (many via train network) and meet with hundreds of constituents at surgeries, events, etc. Imagine how many people an MP would come into contact with in a 14 day+ incubation period.

They would all still be working but in their constituencies.

Apricotfool · 09/03/2020 11:13

Thanks for the cobra meeting info. I’m hoping wfh will be advised and the massive corporation I work for will back it.

Indonesia reports 13 new cases of coronavirus, raising country's total to 19 t.co/eUoE2b20hL

MarshaBradyo · 09/03/2020 11:15

That is a fair point re parliament.

The one thing I’d like to see today is guidance to companies on wfh.

wheresmymojo · 09/03/2020 11:15

In China those under quarantine at home had paper tapes placed across their doors that would break if they left.

These paper tapes were monitored by local CCP officials.

If people broke quarantine they were taken (by force if necessary) to a quarantine centre.

They didn't shoot anyone, that's North Korea!

ofwarren · 09/03/2020 11:16

Yes, I think it's right that they close parliament. They all sit so close together.
I'm just hoping they have some extra safety measures for everyone else too.

OrangeSamphire · 09/03/2020 11:16

Thanks so much for these threads. I'm the type who likes to know worst case scenarios and have all the information to hand so I can plan and feel calmer.

We are well prepped - we always are as we live rurally and have vulnerable people in the household.

One of my children's schools is closed (Plymouth). And my DH has just been told everyone must work from home as head office (London) has a case. Luckily he didn't go in last week as everyone who did is being told to self isolate for 14 days.

My other child's school (Cornwall) is still open, like most. I'm wondering if/when to pull her out. She's asthmatic and autistic. And my son has disabilities which mean a severe respiratory infection could be deadly for him.

AnneKipanki · 09/03/2020 11:16

@usernameishistory
The doors were taped . I think if they went out once they got a warning .
If caught again they were taken to a purpose built quarantine unit .

There is a lot of 'management'.
