sud
Whats the advice been?? Have these same people been given lots of education nationally around staying disease free? Or has it all been minimised there too?

Interesting that behaviour is going on so widely there, despite shops sensibly limiting numbers allowed at a time, and so on.

@fedup21 thats always been the cut off point in my mind. Once they shut the doors on parliament I’m taking my son out of school. It can’t be one rule for them and another for us and if I get the LEA people on my back that’ll be my argument.

Number12 · 09/03/2020 10:47

The Big bag science fair has been cancelled in Birmingham. Pp mentioned this, I told my ds he couldn't go due to risk

Langbannedforsafeguardingkids · 09/03/2020 10:48

Presumably you're still allowed in your own garden on isolation? I am feeling very thankful that we have one..... We'd be well over 2m away from anyone else out there. Am planning to buy seeds and start a veg growing project with the kids if they're off school...... but yes, copious tv and screen time is a definite life saver if / when the schools close. I've found Peppa Pig to be a very effective babysitter in the past.

I wish they'd get on with the measures to delay and flatten the peak.

usernameishistory · 09/03/2020 10:48

We are concerned enough to try to stop hcp getting it but we all need to get it to get herd immunity.

Its anticipated in govt modelling that 20% will get it at any one time.

Sorry 'big bang science fair'

SistemaAddict · 09/03/2020 10:49

Thanks @ofwarren.

When are today's figures being released? I'm confused as have heard about 7am rather than 2pm but I've not read anything today.

ShanghaiDiva · 09/03/2020 10:50

There is a difference between social distancing which we had in my city in China: you could go out, but nothing open so we stayed at home and self isolation which means you cannot go out, regardless of how frustrating it may be to stay at home. When I go back to China I will need to self isolate for 14 days and the compound mgt will enforce this.

usernotfound0000 · 09/03/2020 10:51

CV cruise ship survivors being interviewed on This Morning now.

ofwarren · 09/03/2020 10:53

Today's figures for England will be at 2pm, or after if they are late with them.
I'm dreading them today.
I bet we don't hear about the cobra meeting till tomorrow like the last one they did.

fedup21 · 09/03/2020 10:53

Exactly.

How can it be a 3 month shut down for the toffs but the rest of the hoi polloi keep on grinding?!

Laniakea · 09/03/2020 10:53

it's the same old story - the restrictions only apply to other people, there's always 101 excuses why it's too onerous for me, why my stuff is more important, why it's okay if I just bend the rules a little bit.

That's my I think we're screwed because unless there are serious legal consequences for breaking isolation people simply won't do it.

If you have animals that need to be cared for you arrange for someone else to do it - just like you would have to if you'd been in a horrible accident or were seriously ill in hospital. Is this stuff hard to understand?

alloutoffucks · 09/03/2020 10:54

I suppose if you go out for a run you could end up sneezing or coughing as you run near someone. Sneezes can spread up to 2 metres, so a long way. No one can guarantee they won't sneeze or cough.
In terms of gardens surely it depends how big they are. If you are well off and have a very large garden fine. If you have a small postage stamp garden and neighbours are outside than you can be physically fairly close to them.

Carlislemumof4 · 09/03/2020 10:54

Not for if under strict quarantine but I found this information useful regarding how the virus is spread for if, as a family, we find ourselves in the position of experiencing the symptoms but can't get tested and are self caring and isolating at home.

www.theguardian.com/world/2020/mar/07/coronavirus-reasons-to-be-reassured

Catching it is not that easy (if we are careful) and we can kill it quite easily (provided we try). Frequent, careful hand washing, as we now all know, is the most effective way to stop the virus being transmitted, while a solution of ethanol, a solution of hydrogen peroxide or a solution of bleach will disinfect surfaces. To be considered at high risk of catching the coronavirus you need to live with, or have direct physical contact with, someone infected, be coughed or sneezed on by them (or pick up a used tissue), or be in face-to-face contact, within two metres, for more than 15 minutes. We’re not talking about passing someone in the street.

So I'd still take the children out in our small front and back gardens, they'd be far enough away from neighbours and passers by. Drive to the shops, practise good hand and tissue hygiene, if not stopping to chat to anyone and going through self serve wouldn't be in prolonged contact.

Within the house we can't isolate from each other as a family, the six of us live in our three bed end terrace with one bathroom, children share bedrooms. So accept if one of us gets it we all will to some degree as with all viruses we pick up (a lot of which come home from school...).

MrsFitzwilliam · 09/03/2020 10:56

I have cancer and extremely low immunity. My daughter has just been published and when I visited her over the weekend, she gave me a copy of her book to give to two of her old teachers, who were instrumental in her getting to where she is now, and to whom it is dedicated, (she lives a long way away so can't give it to them herself).

My plan, before this bastard Covid appeared, was to make an appointment to see the two teachers and give it to them in person. I've been looking forward so much to seeing their faces when they learn she has dedicated it to them. BUT, both of them live in areas where there are already cases confirmed (or they did, I suppose there is a chance they may have moved), and it means me going into a school - a hotbed of germs at the best of times.

What would you do? Would you go anyway, as it will be a short meeting, or would you hand it to the school secretary who lives locally to me and ask her to give it to them?

I know this isn't a huge thing given the choices a lot of people are being asked to make, but it is 9 years of hard work on my daughters part and I want so much to see them and add my own thanks.

Apricotfool · 09/03/2020 10:57

Sorry if this has been answered but do we know what time the COBRA meeting will be at?

Orangeblossom78 · 09/03/2020 10:57

I have seen article saying that 15 mins thing is wrong though Confused

Orangeblossom78 · 09/03/2020 10:58

I would post the books and write a nice note to them

ShanghaiDiva · 09/03/2020 10:58

Exactly the problem. China was quite clear: there are no exceptions. We all received notice from compound mgt that there would be legal consequences if we did not comply.
Some posters suggest that the Chinese complied because they are automatons used to strict govt control. I think people complied because they were terrified, numbers were increasing, no vaccine and long incubation period. It was clear that non compliance put everyone at risk.

Orangeblossom78 · 09/03/2020 10:58

If you were concerned by seeing them I mean

UtterlyPerfectCartoonGiraffe · 09/03/2020 10:59

Cobra meeting looks to be at 11am, but goodness knows when we’ll get any updates. Or if those updates would be anything useful!

ofwarren · 09/03/2020 11:00

CarlisleMum you do realise that if you have been diagnosed with coronavirus and been told to self isolate and you went to the shop, you could get arrested?

usernameishistory · 09/03/2020 11:00

I found this on the JAMA site (as linked in OP)
About infection's in babies in China (retrospectively)

Nine infected infants were identified between December 8, 2019, and February 6, 2020 (Table). All patients were hospitalized. Seven patients were female. The youngest was aged 1 month and the oldest was 11 months. There were 2 patients from Beijing, 2 from Hainan, and 1 each from Guangdong, Anhui, Shanghai, Zhejiang, and Guizhou.

Four patients were reported to have fever, 2 had mild upper respiratory tract symptoms, 1 had no symptoms but tested positive for COVID-19 in a designated screening because of exposure to infected family members, and 2 had no information on symptoms available. The time between admission and diagnosis was 1 to 3 days.

Families of all 9 infants had at least 1 infected family member, with the infant’s infection occurring after the family members’ infection. Seven infants were reported to be either living in Wuhan or having family members who visited Wuhan, 1 had no direct linkage to Wuhan, and 1 had no information available. None of the 9 infants required intensive care or mechanical ventilation or had any severe complications.

Apologies if this has been asked before, I've lurked on most of these threads but they move so fast I've probably missed loads.

What are the daily numbers being tested per each European country? I understand it is 2000 in the UK but wonder if we know numbers elsewhere.
