France reports 233 new cases of coronavirus and 5 new deaths, or 336 new cases and 7 new deaths so far today, raising total to 949 cases and 16 dead t.co/eUoE2b20hL

woodencoffeetable · 07/03/2020 20:47

plus it is not yet clear if people can get infected more than once.

FourTeaFallOut · 07/03/2020 20:48

I missed chunks yesterday, what is the incidence of hair loss with chloroquine phosphate and isn't it just temporary? I'd happily take that, preferable to shattered glass lungs.

BigChocFrenzy · 07/03/2020 20:48

Telegraph said 8 million people had "flu-like" symptoms in 2018,
although some of those would just be a bad cold

So, several million CV19 cases isn't completely out of the question, if it is that infectious

NEW: British Columbia reports 6 new cases of coronavirus, including 2 former passenger of the Grand Princess and 2 people linked to a care home in Vancouver t.co/eUoE2b20hL

Quartz2208 · 07/03/2020 20:49

yes @choux I cant either (and I doubled checked as well its www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-51777049 that says it).

www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/coronavirus-age-sex-demographics/

shows as well that same statistic. It just seems odd

Greece reports 21 new cases of #coronavirus, raising total to 66

IRELAND- new case of coronavirus in the republic of Ireland taking the total number of cases to 19

Wehttam · 07/03/2020 20:51

I have this feeling of utter dread that this will absolutely overwhelm health care worldwide in a matter of weeks or a month or two. Those with elderly relatives please BEG them to stay safe, to keep away from crowds, busy environments, planes, anything with people, for a good while, until this first wave passes and we have a hold on the situation.

Otherwise many very difficult decisions may need to be made about who is treated.

WaterSheep · 07/03/2020 20:54

Worldometers has these stats for Italy, I just can't comprehend how whitty can say that over 80's have a greater than 90% chance of recovery

Percentage of deaths by age group:
90+ years old: 6% of deaths
80 - 89 years old: 42% of deaths
70 - 79 years old: 35% of deaths
60 - 69 years old: 16% of deaths

Plantherd · 07/03/2020 20:57

@Wehttam

What age would you consider elderly? I only ask as my DH parents and mine fall in the 60-70 category. All working full time jobs, relatively busy social lives (2/4 are immuno compromised)

US states' trade visit to UK abandoned over coronavirus fears

LarkDescending · 07/03/2020 20:59

Sorry to those alarmed by my chloroquine hair loss anecdata. It is a known side-effect of chloroquine, but I don’t think it’s that common. I had to take antimalarials for 3 months while travelling and continued to lose hair for another 3 months after that, resulting a near-total loss of head hair. It was many years ago, and it grew back to normal over time.

My GP took one look at me and said “that’ll be the chloroquine”.

Oakmaiden · 07/03/2020 21:00

The death rate is 4% based on positive test but I would guess that if it didn’t infect one other person, that rate is going to increase to 10 or 15%.

This is where the statistics fall down, as it is commonly accepted the reported and tested cases are just the tip of the iceberg. There are a lot more cases in the community, under the radar. Which may pull the death rate down to 2% or lower. We may never know the true infection rate.

Wehttam · 07/03/2020 21:01

Plant 60+ seems the most affected, if others here feel a lower starting point is necessary please say. I’ve told my 66 year old aunt to restrict leaving the house as much as possible. She has COPD and managed Lung cancer, so taking this risk is unacceptable in my view.

Quartz2208 · 07/03/2020 21:02

I think it starts at 50 and rises in each decade

FourTeaFallOut · 07/03/2020 21:03

Don't worry on my account @LarkDescending - I can rock a wig Grin

ShanghaiDiva · 07/03/2020 21:03

We can see from countries where radical action has been taken that the number of new cases is falling.
The question is whether such draconian measures are acceptable to western countries.

Jumpingintotheabyss · 07/03/2020 21:05

Can anyone imagine our infrastructure being able to track people and call them like big chock described earlier in Germany?

Elderly cut of would seem 55 + or - 5 years dependent on fitness, weight, sex -5?

Oakmaiden · 07/03/2020 21:06

Worldometers has these stats for Italy, I just can't comprehend how whitty can say that over 80's have a greater than 90% chance of recovery

Statistics can be like that, though. They can be skewed by unaccounted factors, or just simply not hold true in one time and place, while remaining true overall.

justchecking1 · 07/03/2020 21:06
  • However, I suspect doctors would decide this routinely ? Any doctors in the house / thread ?*

True. They're calling it The Three Wise Men protocol.

(Sexist bastards)

BigChocFrenzy · 07/03/2020 21:07

Wehttam Many aged 60-67 are still at work
I wonder if they will end up with a specially high casualty rate,
because they'll be just as exposed as 25-year-old colleagues, during a commute too, but are umpteen times more likely to die if infected

I'm so relieved that I retired recently
I would be worried sick if I were still in our office Petri dish, being coughed and spluttered over for 35 hours per week
My colleagues were lovely, but they always seemed to be mildly ill

BigChocFrenzy · 07/03/2020 21:08

"The Three Wise Men protocol"

Oh, so that is genuine
