The government's plan seems very closely aligned with current WHO advice. I haven't compared them in minute detail, but I haven't spotted any major differences - what are others thoughts on this?

frumpety · 03/03/2020 20:34

So people who are positive for the virus cannot pass it on unless they develop symptoms ? Is that what Dr Tederos said ? Because that is very good news if true. Do we have any figures on how many people were non symptomatic continuously in China ?

ofwarren · 03/03/2020 20:34

Thanks very much for that information Orange
I think that is very important for people to be aware of

nellodee · 03/03/2020 20:35

The WHO are a bunch of fence sitting ninnies, not wanting to offend anyone who might cut their budgets, if you ask me.

YouAreTheEggManIAmTheWalrus · 03/03/2020 20:35

@User1775564212 Carlisle is not one of the cases from todays official stats they’ll no doubt go on tomorrow’s now.

ofwarren · 03/03/2020 20:35

I always thought Steve the super spreader had no symptoms?

SansaSnark · 03/03/2020 20:36

@nellodee Yes, I think in Wuhan they sort of have some advantages- as you say the rest of the world isn't in the same situation, so they can import stuff- including medicines and food if necessary. The country hasn't already taken an economic hit, and there are lots of healthy people around to do things like building new hospitals and processing test kits and so on.

There's also a strong desire to stop the spread to the rest of the country and the world- and the eyes of the world are on them!

Obviously there were initial problems too, with an initial cover up, and an initial high death rate due to a lack of understanding on how best to treat the virus.

To take it wider than the UK, the whole world could go on a Wuhan style lockdown and that would probably halt the spread, but it's also not viable for huge numbers of reasons, and you'd end up with people dying for other reasons.

Every government has got to take a balancing act- I'm not saying ours is striking the right balance, but they've got to consider what is viable and what people will put up with as well!

ragged · 03/03/2020 20:36

Is Steve the Brighton guy? He had bad cold type symptoms, managed with painkillers iirc.

GPwife2411 · 03/03/2020 20:37

@ofwarren, yes, Steve was my first thought when I watched the WHO broadcast!

OP posts:
GPwife2411 · 03/03/2020 20:37

But wasn't he asymptomatic for some of it? I may well be misremembering.

OP posts:
tud41 · 03/03/2020 20:37

My own fear is that the government just don't have a clue what they are doing

How can that be the case when the main body [WHO] thats sole job to deal with this sort of crisis has said everything they have done so far is good and there plans for the future are also what they would expect a country to take.

I will also say yes most people have there own agenda in these threads and i do understand that people will agree with different peoples opinions. so i will happily admit down the line if i am wrong. My agenda tho is to just take a step back and look at many other countries and realize so far the government has not done that bad of a job and that we should all have a little faith befor throwing BJ under the bus for failing to handle this.

CheekyMango · 03/03/2020 20:38

Just remember this stuff sells papers and the govt is managing mass hysteria with a genuine health threat.
@NotJustACigar just get your sister to wear rubber gloves and bin them at the end of each shift. Problem solved.

Here’s a good piece on what the NHS system wide level four status means

www.hsj.co.uk/quality-and-performance/national-incident-over-coronavirus-allows-nhse-to-command-local-resources/7027045.article

SansaSnark · 03/03/2020 20:40

These sources all suggest that spread is possible but less likely when someone is asymptomatic:

www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/coronavirus-research-woman-with-no-symptoms-infects-five-people#Wuhan-to-Anyang

www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/about/transmission.html

www.health.harvard.edu/blog/as-coronavirus-spreads-many-questions-and-some-answers-2020022719004#q4

As with lots of things, I think the answer is we don't fully understand how transmission works, and I would be skeptical of anyone making firm claims unless they have peer reviewed research to back them up.

UnamusingShift · 03/03/2020 20:40

im not getting told what to do off a bunch of old gits anymore

ShanghaiDiva · 03/03/2020 20:41

@SansaSnark
China locked down Wuhan and most of Hubei, but they also effectively locked down most of the country,
All schools are closed
They extended the holiday for Chinese New Year
They stopped movement between cities and provinces
Anyone arriving in China is under a 14 day quarantine - some at home, some in other facilities.
Mask wearing was made compulsory
Only residents allowed to enter compounds
Restaurants closed
Private clinics were closed so people had to go to hospital
I live in Jiangsu province, approx 400km from Wuhan, and restrictions such as the one listed above started on 25th/26th January.

SansaSnark · 03/03/2020 20:41

@tud41 WHO have a political agenda too. They're not declaring the disease a pandemic when it very clearly meets their criteria, for example.

ShanghaiDiva · 03/03/2020 20:48

@nellodee
The virus was/is also surrounding Wuhan- every province in China has been affected and containment measures are in effect everywhere. In some cities eg Hangzhou (not Hubei province) there have been severe restrictions with only one person per family able to leave home every three days to go shopping.
I don’t think it is clear from the media that China effectively locked down the whole country. Office workers in my city only started to go back to work last week.

SansaSnark · 03/03/2020 20:49

@ShanghaiDiva I didn't realize quite how extensive the measures outside of Hubei were, but I do think parts of my post still stand. Medics and essential workers could still be brought in from elsewhere, essential goods can still be brought in.

I also just don't think most UK residents would abide by those sorts of measures!

Adesignforstrife · 03/03/2020 20:50

I agree with Red's comment fwiw. That's what I heard from it too.

AHippoNamedBooBooButt · 03/03/2020 20:51

I've been enlightening the uniformed of facebook. The "it's just the flu" and someone also said "the flu is more dangerous" tribe. However I gave up when this gem came up (from an american btw)

I’m not trying to sound like a conspiracy theorist or belittle the actual deaths that have occurred but...swine flu, SARS, H1N1, Ebola, Zika.... corona virus. Many happen during election years and mysteriously disappear. Not saying what you should do or not do but I think it’s more of a scare tactic than anything. The flu itself kills far more people.

🤦‍♀️

SansaSnark · 03/03/2020 20:51

@ShanghaiDiva Do you think a Chinese style containment strategy would be possible in the UK?

ofwarren · 03/03/2020 20:53

#CZECHIA- the govt has banned the export of FFP3 class respirators outside the Czech Republic and at the same time their sale to all — except health and social facilities, public health authorities, IRS units and state administrative bodies. / @CT24zive t.co/ZVct6Dlugp

AbsentmindedWoman · 03/03/2020 20:56

I understood the "less infectious than flu" remark to mean that mostly, you are less likely to pick it up from an asymptomatic person. Far more likely if someone is coughing.

But some will be like Steve the super spreader, and will shed a lot more virus, so they'll break this norm and infect more.

But overall a good thing that it gets around less than flu,.
