The word "hysterical" is a sexist term that has historically been used to silence and dismiss women's concerns and has no place on this thread. It isn't hysterical to want to prepare for a pandemic. And comparing coronavirus current statistics with number of deaths from epidemics and pandemics that have already finished is ill-thought out at best.

MarshaBradyo · 03/03/2020 20:07

I find the looking forward far more useful than not re the workforce, we may still be in the same phase though.

User1775564212 · 03/03/2020 20:08

Does anyone know where the latest 12 are? Sorry, late to the party...

GPwife2411 · 03/03/2020 20:08

A repost doesn't indicate an endorsement, as in Twitter. It's important to discuss positions even if we don't agree with them surely?

Carlisle is one I’m guessing

lifecare is so so sad

Redtoothbrush has many interesting OPINIONS. She/he might be right or wrong but I think we need to stick with facts and not speculation.

hoovermyrug · 03/03/2020 20:10

Agree with other posters. The message watching the WHO conference today was very much about containment being possible given the lack of asymptomatic transfer of the disease - unlike flu, so swings and roundabouts. Stay away from visibly sick people!

GPwife2411 · 03/03/2020 20:10

Also, to be fair, my DH came from a meeting of medics yesterday in which they concluded that it was highly likely to move past containment at some point relatively soon. I posted that but no-one jumped on me (maybe it was too late).

This seems like a terrible idea for controlling any spread to me!

It's clear the government are aiming to keep schools open at any cost- presumably to help people get to work, especially healthcare workers. But this seems like it will only increase spread.

Cynically, I do feel like this is a convenient excuse to soften us up for planned changes to public services such as increased class sizes, reduced NHS availability and reduced police presence.

NotTerfNorCis · 03/03/2020 20:11

I'm in Switzerland on a business trip. When I got to the office, everyone was obviously worried about the virus. Yet there were several people coughing including one who went home and another who was in quite a bad way, but no one said anything.

This is because "highly likely to move on from containment soon" and "the government want people to start getting it to get the ball rolling" are 2 completely different statements.

VivaLeBeaver · 03/03/2020 20:14

I work at a University, I've heard no talk of closing. Obviously if we end up in an Italy style situation that could change but things would have to get a lot worse. A lot of courses can't be taught by distance learning.

Pppppickupapenguin · 03/03/2020 20:14

If (when) we catch it, what will we do about sicknotes? Even if the GPs are not all off sick themselves, they won't want potential cases clogging up their waiting rooms.

WHO advice for the public

ofwarren · 03/03/2020 20:17

Wtf Helena 😱 that is absolutely shocking!!

AvocadoOwl · 03/03/2020 20:18

I don't think that @RedToothBrush's post was particularly controversial, it summed up my understanding of what was said today quite neatly.

At the press conference Whitty made it clear that actions surrounding 'contain' and 'delay' strategies are very similar anyway with contact tracing having a key role in both, for example.

AbsentmindedWoman · 03/03/2020 20:18

Agree, @tud41

GPwife2411 · 03/03/2020 20:18

@VivaLeBeaver - me too, no talk of closure, and no communication from my dept about CV at all actually. Two v general emails about travel insurance and how to handle attendance monitoring if people are quarantined.

Red is a beautiful natural writer with an extremely persuasively style.

I agree many comments and insights are brilliant. I enjoy the posts.
But there is without a shadow of doubt a deep political slant. A political prism through which every move is viewed. Sometimes we it's so subtle. Sometimes less so eg the brexit and travelling reference.

I always remind myself of this, when reading reds, interesting posts.

nellodee · 03/03/2020 20:19

I think it is very frustrating that globally we have seen one country who has experienced what we are going to before us. China got this first. They prioritised containment and it worked, but at a huge cost to the economy.

Our government has looked at this, and said, well, it may have worked, but we're going to try to do it differently, because we would like to protect our economy more.

HasaDigaEebowai · 03/03/2020 20:20

Someone asked about the WHO statement about the death rate of 3.4%. Its on the BBC website

@AvocadoOwl I agree with this:

At the press conference Whitty made it clear that actions surrounding 'contain' and 'delay' strategies are very similar anyway with contact tracing having a key role in both, for example.

Also agree with previous posters that research is continuous and iterative throughout the whole cycle and afterwards.
