Why did they not just stop all plane travel last month? It can’t be contained otherwise. By not doing that it’s a foregone conclusion it will be a pandemic. It’s pointless to try to contain it now.

I’m not remotely clever and worked this out weeks ago. I feel like “experts” are moronically dumb

Springinsight · 01/03/2020 23:46

Put, I've read some where in these threads that it's been stated that it is doesn't make any difference if asthmatic or not.

PickleBottomNo3sMum · 01/03/2020 23:46

AbsentmindedWoman Thank you for that. I had gestational diabetes but haven’t been called to be retested yet this year although what I do know is that when I eat too much carbs and sugar I feel like crap. I still have testing strips etc so I might just start testing again tomorrow as a precaution. I’ve already got loads of food in (no chocolate!) but will have to totally rethink that if my sugars are too high.

saltinesandcoffeecups · 01/03/2020 23:46

How is the US media playing this? Is the general public showing awareness?

I’m in the middle of the US (one CV case 70 miles away, and 3 others 90 miles away) , today is the first day I’m hearing anything but jokes on stocking up. It’s business as usual from what I can see.

I expect that to change next week to some extent, but probably not by much. I have tickets to a concert on the 11th, fully plan on going unless it’s cancelled, not changing any plans, have done some stocking up shopping and plan a little more.

OhMargo · 01/03/2020 23:47

re the US, are tests free for anyone with symptoms?

Fere · 01/03/2020 23:48

British Government sacrificed public health for Brexit.
Do you still wonder why we are kept in the dark about the virus by Johnson's government?
SHAME ON THEM!
twitter.com/pmdfoster/status/1234242149530656768?s=19

"Matt Hancock’s department wanted to retain membership of the Early Warning and Response System (EWRS) as part of the EU-UK future relationship deal, but No 10 said “no”, The Daily Telegraph has learnt.

Senior health advisers warned that exiting the EWRS, which has helped coordinate the response to the virus and played a vital role during the bird flu outbreak, would put public health at risk.

However, the British negotiating team, which reports to Boris Johnson, did not want to blur the UK’s request for a basic, Canada-style trade deal, it is claimed. Every add-on requested by the UK would risk giving the EU leverage to demand post-Brexit alignment...."

AlexaShutUp · 01/03/2020 23:49

Matt Hancock wanted to retain membership of the EWRS as part of the EU-UK future relationship deal, however No 10 said no*

How depressing!

RedToothBrush · 01/03/2020 23:49

I learnt just now that we are 5 physical contacts down the chain from a positive case diagnosed today.

Yes. And?

That's being melodramatic.

The law of Kevin Bacon and degrees of separation means thats likely to be the case for the majority of people. You can do an amazing number of people with 5 degrees of separation.

Today I learned that my friend's friend was evacuated from Wuhan and was quarantined at Arrowe Park.

RedToothBrush · 01/03/2020 23:50

re the US, are tests free for anyone with symptoms?

No.

That's one of the major problems in the US.

OhMargo · 01/03/2020 23:54

Surprised the Torygraph of all sources would mention this. But that is what the poster Fere mentioned in his/her post above.

Is there something afoot?

PutYourBackIntoit · 01/03/2020 23:56

I don't think I'm being melodramatic, Red.

My son gets a sniffle, it goes straight to his chest. He's been blue lighted to hospital twice now. He gets very poorly, very quickly.

So if your friends friend who was in Wuhan spent time with your friend, and then you spent time with your friend, and you found out, just now, that the original case was positive you wouldn't be concerned??

Mittens030869 · 01/03/2020 23:56

good luck Mittens - I don't think it is possible to keep up

You're right but it's better than simply relying on the news channels and online

OhMargo · 01/03/2020 23:57

So in US we are not hearing the full story at all are we?

If you can afford testing fine, but if you cannot you are not in the stats.

saltinesandcoffeecups · 01/03/2020 23:57

@OhMargo

Not really a straightforward answer. In a situation like this, it’s likely that the local department of health would just eat the cost. Most insurance companies would probably pay as a diagnostic test, and those on public insurance again would have it paid for. So all those covers most of the population.

Worst case scenario is nobody pays, the hospital discounts the final bill like crazy and writes off 90% of the bill.

FelicityFebruary · 02/03/2020 00:01

What is the EWRS currently doing?

vodkaredbullgirl · 02/03/2020 00:02

how many more do you need on this

Wehttam · 02/03/2020 00:02

See that everyone, PAYING for your tests!?

Christ so many here can’t even afford to stock up for the week ahead never mind a month as well as paying for medical treatments.

We are fortunate to have the NHS even if it isn’t perfect.

FelicityFebruary · 02/03/2020 00:03

Sounds like I should go lower carb again. Drat!

saltinesandcoffeecups · 02/03/2020 00:07

To be fair, I can pay for a test and have insurance. But at this point why bother? If I get sick, I’ll be at home in bed, I don’t have a connection to anyone that has travelled, and if I go to a doctor or hospital they can decide if they want to test for it (but really I would hope they’d be focused on treatment than who I’ve been in contact with). . I really won’t care at that point and it will be community case so nobody else will either.

Fere · 02/03/2020 00:08

@ OhMargo torygraph cocked up by making a big thing of bojo's baby announcement, trying to gain credibility with the public perhaps?

AbsentmindedWoman · 02/03/2020 00:10

If you can afford testing fine, but if you cannot you are not in the stats.

Right. But if someone gets really ill, and a friend/ family member can drag them to A&E the hospital WILL treat them in an emergency situation if there is immediate threat to life. In other words they wont let you die there and then in an acute situation like being injured in a car accident. At least in my state.

I hope at that point, the state public health department kicks in and insists on testing for covid 19 as an appropriate response to a public health emergency. Admittedly this could be optimistic on my part though!

OhMargo · 02/03/2020 00:12

Fere,

Point taken and noted!

OhMargo · 02/03/2020 00:14

saltinesandcoffeecups

Sounds a bit like social medicine to me. OMG in the US of all places. Really?

alloutoffucks · 02/03/2020 00:17

36 cases in UK now, seems to have jumped quite suddenly.

Kids tend to get this virus very mildly because they have less receptors on their lungs.
Glad to hear the high mortality rate with diabetes is uncontrolled diabetes as DP has type 2.

usernameishistory · 02/03/2020 00:18

Containment? Don't make me laugh BJ.

Our figures are no different to the exponential increases elsewhere, theres no containment going on is there? Its still breaking out all over.

Caveat to this though, something I mentioned earlier, the original breakout in Brighton hasn't brought forth more cases, so can we say it's worked?

That its not as virulent as we are worrying it is, because there's no further cases there?
