Who’s carrying on as normal re summer holidays?

ShesGotBetteDavisEyes · 01/03/2020 17:24

My dh, who is usually very un-bothered by pretty much anything, doesn’t want to book a foreign holiday for summer as he thinks it’s silly in the current situation re coronavirus. I’m not too bothered so long as we go away so agreed to book a UK holiday and wait and see and possibly book a last minute foreign holiday if things have changed in July/august.

Went online yesterday and was shocked at how very few places are left at our chosen UK destination. We go here every year anyway and there are usually lots of options available at this time.

I can only surmise that people feel the same as us and aren’t willing to risk booking foreign holidays so everywhere is getting snapped up quickly.
Have you changed your usual plans to holiday in UK this year or do you think it’s all a bit ridiculous and intend to carry on as usual going abroad?
YANBU - staying in UK
YABU - going abroad as usual

I have no plans on changing my normal summer routine of going back to the States. To think that staying in Central London is more safe is ridiculous.

Delatron · 02/03/2020 18:13

Yes exactly. I’m going to a concert in London on Thursday, is that less risky than me getting on a plane to an island where there are no cases currently? I don’t think so.

MintyMabel · 02/03/2020 19:37

We were going to go to Paris at Easter. I decided not to book it. I’m the same as your husband, not prone to panic or over reaction. Thing is, I couldn’t care less about Coronavirus but I’m not about to risk having to cancel the holiday because they decide to start banning travel to places and not being able to get my money back. According to many, there is a clause in their insurance that says if the media have reported potential issues, and FCO subsequently advise against travel, the insurance won’t pay out.

okiedokieme · 02/03/2020 19:40

Just booked camping in France, I have insurance though which does cover me

Twinkletoes888 · 02/03/2020 19:43

I’d already booked mine to Balearic island last year, still going, am looking for April or May I just can’t get hysterical I need some sun

Delatron · 02/03/2020 20:32

On the Coronavirus program today on BBC they were talking about holidays (and basically saying it’s fine/don’t cancel).

There was an example of a couple going to Cyprus now. The wife went and the husband didn’t want to because of Coronavirus. She went (no cases in Cyprus). He stayed home in Essex (where there is a case). They pointed out how ridiculous this was. I agree.

Furfockssake · 02/03/2020 20:43

@coquohvan assuming you know you can carry the virus and be asymptomatic? Hmm

Furfockssake · 02/03/2020 20:47

If there is one case in Essex and none in Cyrpus that does not mean one is therefore safer than the other. To go to Cyrpus you have to get close and personal with a load of people at the airport, on the plane and on any transfers. You don't know those people, whether they are ill or not, or what virus hotspots they may have come from. To stay in Essex you may go to the supermarket, stay well away from people and then go home. The two are just not comparable in terms of risk.

Delatron · 02/03/2020 20:58

Yes and thousands of people are getting on the tube and buses every day here where there are cases.

I’d rather be in the sunshine in Cyprus and topping up my vitamin D than commuting on tubes and buses and going to local supermarkets etc. Who knows where the risk is? Unless you are going to stay at hone and never leave the house?

MintyMabel · 02/03/2020 21:00

I have a cruise booked for August and unless advise changes to not go then I will be there and enjoying it.

A relative of mine has just returned from a cruise. They couldn’t make their last few stops because the ports wouldn’t allow them to dock due to a passenger displaying flu like symptoms (turned in to nothing) they then had to circle round a whole bunch of islands for three days beyond the supposed end of the cruise until they found somewhere they could transfer off to, so they could get flights home. They spent four hours on a bus on the runway before their flights were ready and came home to a UK airport and had to hang around whilst they organised onward travel home for the passengers.

Not exactly the relaxing cruise they had paid for.

Jenasaurus · 02/03/2020 21:03

I have just cancelled my May trip to Croatia, I have lost £400 which is mine and my DDs deposit, but she has a compromised immunity and was hospitalised in January after suffering with flu which damaged her kidneys. I had to decide this week or would have lost all the money and be over 2k down. I balanced my reasoning on the fact that Croatia is the Italians choice of holiday destination, the fact that I didn't want to risk being quarantined abroad and also my DD health, plus she told me she was scared about being at Gatwick, let alone being abroad. Once you start dreading your holiday rather than looking forward to it, I knew it was time to cancel. I have told my DD I have still got the week off and we can do/go somewhere else if the situation is different. The relief I felt after cancelling was immense. Having said that I also feel sad as before this virus I had been looking forward to the lovely spa hotel, with beautiful views and a swim up pool (nothing compares to health though)

I also wonder if our figures in the UK increase, it will mean that other countries may ban flights form the UK too.

LynetteScavo · 02/03/2020 22:14

We were thinking of going abroad this year, but have opted for UK instead. I've just booked it this evening before we can't get in anywhere. I'll see how things go and then book something last minute such as a city break in Europe, if it seems like a good idea.

LynetteScavo · 02/03/2020 22:20

I think the reason people are cancelling going abroad is that while trips can be very exciting, they can cause anxiety. Adding on coronavirus is just too much for some people.

Itsjustmee · 03/03/2020 01:25

I’m not particularly worried I’ve literally just come back from a month long holiday abroad and I have suddenly came down with a bad cold if it was one of the areas where CV was I would be worried but it wasn’t
I’m going to New York end of June for 2 weeks
I’ve just bought insurance and balance needs to be paid end of July
So far only paid £150 so will reassess nearer the time but I very much doubt if I would cancel unless it was advised by the government

SylviaC · 03/03/2020 02:08

The main issue for me is not so much whether travel is banned to any particular country but what would happen if you went to another country and then got quarantined or one of your family got ill - you might end up having to staying away for a lot longer and then would travel insurance cover all that additional cost?

At least if we are in UK, it would be more feasible to get home.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 03/03/2020 03:26

We booked our holiday to Northern Italy before Christmas. I'm.not worrying about it as I figure that by late June or will either have spread everywhere or it will have died down/out.

More worrying is that we have booked to go to the US in early May for 5 days to see PIL. We will.only cancel if FO advises against travel to there. PIL are in their late 80s and we haven't seen them for two years so I really want to go.

StCharlotte · 03/03/2020 19:38

We're still planning to go on our trip to The Med in June/July. It's a relative's house snd a real home from home so I'd be delighted to be stuck out there indefinitely Grin

Seriously though, a large Icelandic Ash Cloud might be what the world needs right now. Ground everything for a fortnight...

alloutoffucks · 06/03/2020 01:12

It isn't just about getting the virus. It is also the risk of being quarantined, travel being disrupted, anxiety, and also the risk of visitor attractions being closed.

QueenofmyPrinces · 06/03/2020 05:57

Me, DH and our two young children are due to go to Turkey in 5 weeks and I have told my husband that I don’t want to go.

I’m not worried about actually going to Turkey, it’s the airports that bother me - mingling with thousands of people, having no idea where they’ve come from and if they’re carrying the virus. Add in the thought of being on an airplane with infected people, quarantined, or needing treatment in a foreign country, or not being allowed back into the Uk, being stranded etc, and it just doesn’t sound fun.

My FIL is also almost 70, not in the best health and has heart problems, so if either me or my husband passed it on to him, I don’t think he’d fare too well.

I’m also a children’s nurse, working with sick young babies, and I doubt me potentially going to work with the virus wouldn’t be in their best interests either.

There’s a bigger picture to consider.

midnightstar66 · 06/03/2020 06:02

I'm not a worrier and plan to go on any boomed holidays if I can but the reason for waiting to book anything new would be the uncertainty. We might not have a choice as travel could be prevented - I'd just wait and see and book something last minute if travel isn't restricted when the time comes

LettyFisher · 06/03/2020 06:14

I am just poised to book a sailing holiday to Greece, but not sure what to do about it.

I do have a holiday booked for Easter - skiing in Norway.

I don't think I feel too concerned - I would have thought London, when it hits here, will be more affected than a remote resort in Norway. I might just check my travel insurance though.

My dd is travelling in the far east.

I thought I read that the virus can't live in temperatures above 26 degrees?

QueenofmyPrinces · 06/03/2020 06:17

I thought I read that the virus can't live in temperatures above 26 degrees?

Well it seems to manages okay living inside our bodies which are typically at 37 degrees...

MurrayTheMonk · 06/03/2020 06:35

I hadn't booked anything as we were still considering where to go. Virus wise I'd happily still book, and we'd probably get something nice a bit cheaper tbh-but it's the insurance that's worrying-I wonder if it's still possible to get it or not with current hysteria?

bellinisurge · 06/03/2020 06:46

I know the owner of the place we're going to in Crete in early June. Have told them unless our area is locked down/we are required to self isolate, the Foreign Office advises against it or Crete bans visitors, we are going.
I'm a general prepper by the way. Not a willy waving "it's all a hoax/it's just a cold" merchant you see popping up on here.

randomsabreuse · 06/03/2020 07:04

I'd not be booking but more due to wondering which airlines/holiday firms will still exist by then!

FlyBe is very much the tip of the iceberg but few airlines have much profit margin with the big reduction in business (so flexible tickets/higher fares) travel.

I do wonder if the current situation will wean people off most face to face meetings in general... probably not a bad thing in the long term!
