Who’s carrying on as normal re summer holidays?

My dh, who is usually very un-bothered by pretty much anything, doesn’t want to book a foreign holiday for summer as he thinks it’s silly in the current situation re coronavirus. I’m not too bothered so long as we go away so agreed to book a UK holiday and wait and see and possibly book a last minute foreign holiday if things have changed in July/august.

Went online yesterday and was shocked at how very few places are left at our chosen UK destination. We go here every year anyway and there are usually lots of options available at this time.

I can only surmise that people feel the same as us and aren’t willing to risk booking foreign holidays so everywhere is getting snapped up quickly.
Have you changed your usual plans to holiday in UK this year or do you think it’s all a bit ridiculous and intend to carry on as usual going abroad?
YANBU - staying in UK
YABU - going abroad as usual

Not booking anything abroad until the corona virus thing is more settled. Way too risky in my opinion.

NotStayingIn · 01/03/2020 19:14

@eMmAsuper8 It was with Air China. And apologies, I realised I made it sound like I already had the money back. I haven’t yet and was told the same. So fingers crossed we do actually get it back!

shinyredbus · 01/03/2020 19:19

Jesus wept. It’s not the Black Death you know? We are away next week, then a week for Easter, then 2 months for summer.

MinesaPinotPlease · 01/03/2020 19:19

Had a bucket list trip booked months ago for Aug 2020 to China 🇨🇳 :(

Fully expect to not be able to go / cancel and therefore yes will stay in the UK.

weegiemum · 01/03/2020 19:25

We have a uk main holiday one year, abroad the next (we own a holiday property so go there, plus at Easter and Autumn). This year was supposed to be abroad but we'd already decided to stay "home" for financial reasons. Our house is in a gorgeous part of Scotland and we're not doing any maintenance this year (yay!) so can go and relax. I expect our beaches to be busier, though!!

JemimaMuddledUp · 01/03/2020 19:29

I'd booked trips to Berlin and Rome before Coronavirus broke out. I have insurance. If by the summer the government advice is not to travel then I won't go, but otherwise I'm carrying on as normal.

C00kiesandCr3am · 01/03/2020 19:36

Of course it’s not the Black Death( what a silly thing to say)but frankly I’d think very hard and triple check my insurance if you can get it as becoming ill, paying extra for accommodation whilst ill abroad, hospital care, repatriation, cancelled flights, cancelled holidays....... all costs a fortune. Then there is self quarantine time after having had holiday used up.

The actual virus is only half of it.

Scarlettpixie · 01/03/2020 19:49

We are already booked to go abroad in August. I wouldn’t book anything now though. As it is we will see how things are nearer the time. If we cancel we loose £400. It starts to go up I think 70 days before travel. We will probably just follow advice at the time in the circumstances.

DaisyDreaming · 01/03/2020 19:53

I’m not booking like I was planning too for September, im just holding off to see how things go. I’m not scared of the virus but would hate for the holiday to be cancelled

june2007 · 01/03/2020 19:54

I have one booked for May. Booked before the virus was public knowledge. Not sure if spread to Bulgaria and if it has will it be there in May???. It,s in the uk now anyway.

AhoyMrBeaver · 01/03/2020 19:59

We have no intentions to change our plans. What's booked will go ahead unless official advice changes or restrictions are introduced.

Davincitoad · 01/03/2020 20:12

We have booked any fully paid for New York in July. Booked and paid deposit for Rome in May. I am sick with worry (like can’t sleep properly) whereas my husband thinks I’m an idiot.

ShesGotBetteDavisEyes · 01/03/2020 20:25

Hmmm...seems most on here continuing with plans to go abroad then.
I agree there’s no saying UK will be safer, especially in tourist hotspots however I think I’d just rather not take the risk of losing money if we have to cancel for now until we see what happening in a few months.
I wonder if travel agencies are noticing a decrease in bookings?

I've just spoken to an apartment holder in a ski resort Italy. We are booking for next year. We went this year just before it got really big. She said that booking have been massively impacted and lots of cancellations.

PanicAtTheTesco · 01/03/2020 20:59

we have booked and paid for an Easter holiday. Our destination currently has some cases (more than the UK, fewer than Italy). Given that we've had cases within a couple of miles of where we live in the UK, I am keen to go anyway. However right now several major attractions are closed as a precautionary/containment measure, and if they don't reopen there won't be much point in our going.

StCharlotte · 01/03/2020 22:25

I am assuming that by July either the entire globe will be in lock-down or it will all be over so, either way, the decision will be made.

This is my thinking. Let's hope It's the latter Smile

Honeyroar · 01/03/2020 22:32

Just pick somewhere with nice rooms in case you have to quarantine! I travel worldwide for a living, I’ve been abroad several times since it all became big news. I’m only worried about getting stuck away from home and losing work because people aren’t going abroad.

RoseMartha · 01/03/2020 22:38

I havent booked anything but partly because my home is on the market. Partly because money is tight and not sure can afford it with moving. I have to move no choice.

Only holiday in uk anyway often teaming up with friends and going 50/50 on rental.

HollyHocks13 · 01/03/2020 22:47

We're going to Italy in 4 weeks and the US in the summer. Fully intending to go to both!

minsle · 01/03/2020 23:03

We booked a UK holiday in July, ages ago. We'd normally go abroad but dd is still a toddler, so we thought we'd avoid the hassle of flying. I think I probably wouldn't book a trip abroad now, mainly because of the risk of having to cancel it or having to go into isolation if restrictions are introduced. But if we'd already booked an overseas holiday we'd still go, unless we weren't allowed to. We live in London and travel by public transport almost daily (car-free as in zone 1), which is probably far riskier than travelling to most other countries.

GiantKitten · 01/03/2020 23:07

Nothing booked here, but nothing to do with coronavirus - I've been wary about booking abroad since the Brexit deadlines started looming.

Our last EU holiday was January 2019 & we've nothing lined up - I want to know what the travel changes are going to be after 31st December first.

We are going to Jersey in July but booked that last September, & we have a whole-family (adult kids) UK long weekend in June.

YouAreTheEggManIAmTheWalrus · 01/03/2020 23:58

Last August I was looking at hols abroad for this summer and the prices were double for 2020 compared to same holiday for last year. According to rep it was due to uncertainty at the time around Brexit/£/€. So more people may have been put off by silly prices and booked a staycation in Uk for this summer instead.

HerRoyalNotness · 02/03/2020 00:29

We can’t afford to travel so we’ll be staying out per usual. Unless of course lack of bookings make travel super cheap over the summer, then we may be able to escape somewhere

ActualHornist · 02/03/2020 00:29

It’s not just Coronavirus. It’s brexit too, that’s definitely put people off.

iMoan7 · 02/03/2020 00:39

I don’t fear Coronavirus as much as I fear the idea of quarantine with two small children tbh
