Who’s carrying on as normal re summer holidays?

My dh, who is usually very un-bothered by pretty much anything, doesn’t want to book a foreign holiday for summer as he thinks it’s silly in the current situation re coronavirus. I’m not too bothered so long as we go away so agreed to book a UK holiday and wait and see and possibly book a last minute foreign holiday if things have changed in July/august.

Went online yesterday and was shocked at how very few places are left at our chosen UK destination. We go here every year anyway and there are usually lots of options available at this time.

I can only surmise that people feel the same as us and aren’t willing to risk booking foreign holidays so everywhere is getting snapped up quickly.
Have you changed your usual plans to holiday in UK this year or do you think it’s all a bit ridiculous and intend to carry on as usual going abroad?
YANBU - staying in UK
YABU - going abroad as usual

I was about to book our summer holiday to a villa in Greece earlier this week. We get our very fully comprehensive travel insurance via DH's work.

I really liked the villa (I'm very fussy and possibly difficult to please in my requirements) and I know that we have good insurance, but I couldn't bring myself to book it. I don't want the hassle of going through the insurance process if the holiday can't work out due to flight cancellations or restricted travel, blah, blah, blah.

We always do 2 weeks of camping in the UK too. However, all the flooding recently doesn't make that a viable option either.

We booked flights back to the UK in June and I'm frigging hoping we'll be able to go. Things seem to be changing fast

I don’t fear Coronavirus as much as I fear the idea of quarantine with two small children tbh

You and me both, moan!

Not sure why people assume the UK will be safer. confused

Why would staying in the UK be better? Surely the virus will be as much in the UK as elsewhere?

The virus may be here too, but certain locations will still put you more at risk, such as: airports, planes, and large gatherings of tourists from all over the world.

By staying in your own country, you certainly avoid the first two, and most likely the latter, unless your UK holiday is a week in central London.

Topseyt · 02/03/2020 01:18

We haven't booked anything yet, but when we do it will probably be Spain in around September or October, then Australia in around March or April next year to visit DH's sister.

Not at all worried. I'm sure COVID 19 is a nasty virus, but so are many others.

I can't stand the ridiculous mass hysteria around this. The media are absolutely loving it and are having a feeding frenzy.

MaryShelley1818 · 02/03/2020 05:10

I'm going abroad next week, then again 2 weeks after that, a week in May, and then a week in September. So 4 foreign holidays this year and will be going on all of them unless officially told not to.

HulksPurplePanties · 02/03/2020 05:14

If this thing is still doing the rounds come summer holidays, at the rate it spreads, chances are you'll have already had it. Frankly I'd be booking as usual.

Whichoneofyoudidthat · 02/03/2020 05:25

Oddly enough, we've travelled more than we normally would in the last couple of months because of COVID-19. Flights and accommodation are very reasonable. Ridiculously cheap in some instances.

I think giving tray tables, arm rests etc a good wipe with antiseptic wipes is a good idea anyway, and think everyone should do it all the time (same with supermarket trolleys etc). But honestly the last two flights I've taken I've been able to smell (very strongly) bleach based cleaning solution. I've never had that before. I think the airlines are stepping up their cleaning game.

Husband is due to go to Berlin just a few weeks before my due date.
He’s worried about risk of quarantine whilst out there and missing birth

Sirzy · 02/03/2020 05:48

I have a cruise booked for August and unless advise changes to not go then I will be there and enjoying it.

I also have a long weekend in a caravan booked and same goes for that.

Esspee · 02/03/2020 06:31

Reading this from my sun lounger, boosting my immune system with vit. D and loads of healthy food. Also taking lots of drinks to keep washing down the viruses, most of them full of virus destroying alcohol.
I believe this is media hype whipping up the masses into a frenzy. DS1 predicted this and bought shares in a company selling face masks and gambled on the stock market taking a plunge which it duly did. So far he is doing very nicely.
Flu kills more people every single year but when did you last see headlines about that?

wattstoday · 02/03/2020 06:34

I think before long this virus will be just about everywhere so it won't matter too much where you go on holiday....

Iwantmychairback · 02/03/2020 06:41

We only ever holiday in UK. When we booked our May holiday in January, there was much less choice than usual and the prices had shot up. I think it’s more to do with uncertainty over Brexit than Covid - 19.

Tellmetruth4 · 02/03/2020 06:44

Booked our holiday abroad. Will only change plans if Foreign Office advises us to.

Omashu · 02/03/2020 06:56

There are more cases here than there are in my booked holiday destination so I’m still going! I’m not worried about it anyway.

countrygirl99 · 02/03/2020 07:01

We arexstating in the UK but it was booked before Christmas. We were planning to go to northern Italy but my son is getting married in June and the finances/logistics didn't work. The wedding might end up smaller than planned as invites have gone out to 7 other countries from Abu Dhabi to the Falklands

C00kiesandCr3am · 02/03/2020 07:01

Are you all able to get insurance and what is it covering?

TreesSandSea · 02/03/2020 07:04

Hey everyone

Just jumping on here to say , practically, how do you afford holidays?

We have a decent joint wage, but never seem to have enough for holidays. Do you put money away monthly or what? How do you know how much you need?

Fluffybutter · 02/03/2020 07:07

We’re going to California and Hawaii this summer , I’m not cancelling and at this rate there will be as many cases here as anywhere else so what’s the point in staying ?

londonrach · 02/03/2020 07:09

We a wait and see but always do last minute anyway so no difference. Got a friend returning from italy ski ing soon and on the fence weather or not to distance us for a couple of weeks from her.

frumpety · 02/03/2020 07:12

We booked our holiday in the UK in September last year as we have discovered that if we leave it until January to start looking there is very little on offer for the Summer holidays.

recrudescence · 02/03/2020 07:13

I’ve decided to carry on exactly as normal until I’m instructed not to.

HairyFloppins · 02/03/2020 07:15

We had already booked for the USA in August. I wouldn't have booked now. Will wait and see. I will not be going if it's rife still would hate to pass it on to my elderly relatives.

junecat · 02/03/2020 07:18

We had already booked for Greece in June. Will just wait and see but I'm not worrying as yet.

madeyemoodysmum · 02/03/2020 07:21

Trees. I'd start and new thread for this as no one will notice. We have a savings pot that we transfer a set amount too each pay day. That's automatic. Then if I have funds at the end of each month I add a bit more.
