Who’s carrying on as normal re summer holidays?

My dh, who is usually very un-bothered by pretty much anything, doesn’t want to book a foreign holiday for summer as he thinks it’s silly in the current situation re coronavirus. I’m not too bothered so long as we go away so agreed to book a UK holiday and wait and see and possibly book a last minute foreign holiday if things have changed in July/august.

Went online yesterday and was shocked at how very few places are left at our chosen UK destination. We go here every year anyway and there are usually lots of options available at this time.

I can only surmise that people feel the same as us and aren’t willing to risk booking foreign holidays so everywhere is getting snapped up quickly.
Have you changed your usual plans to holiday in UK this year or do you think it’s all a bit ridiculous and intend to carry on as usual going abroad?
YANBU - staying in UK
YABU - going abroad as usual

Prety sure we will be cancelling our holiday. Read the terms and conditions and looks like we only lose the £150 deposit so neither here nor there. We have taken the view having read the news from around the world from many sources. So many people making such a big decision purely on the governments travel advice. This completely baffles me. Are people not capable of independent thought anymore?

Abroad is a big place.

Off to Paris in a couple of weeks and South Africa in the summer

drivingtofrance · 01/03/2020 18:00

I have just booked flights to California for July.

What will be will be.

AlexaShutUp · 01/03/2020 18:01

Not sure why people assume the UK will be safer. Confused

We are holding off on booking anything for now, but often leave it quite late anyway, to be fair.

DonkeyKong2019 · 01/03/2020 18:03

Mine is booked. Will play by ear as it's 5 months awwy

Babyg1995 · 01/03/2020 18:05

We are holidaying in the UK we done last year it was actually more expensive though but worth it as it's beautiful lodge we go to with loads to do for the kids plus DD will only be 3 months old .
We are going to Spain though at new year to visit family so I'm hoping things have improved by then .
.

Snuffkindle · 01/03/2020 18:05

We are going to Central Europe in July. It is booked and paid for so at the moment it is going ahead. We have some extra bits to book as part of it, and I intended to book these over the next 3 months. I won't be doing that now until the situation is clearer.
I did however, book London theatre tickets for our sons August birthday today. The thought occurred to me that it might not be a good idea but I did it anyway

TheFairyCaravan · 01/03/2020 18:06

We booked Fuerteventura yesterday. We're going in May. That's was 33% cheaper than it was at the beginning of the week. A lot of holidays have come down in price. Unless the Govt say it's too dangerous to go I'm definitely going.

Babyg1995 · 01/03/2020 18:06

Oh and we have had ours booked since sept before all this .

teenagetantrums · 01/03/2020 18:08

I'm off next week to canaries. Less cases there than in UK. I'm not worried more chance off plane crashing

Paddingtonthebear · 01/03/2020 18:09

We have a European holiday booked at the end of August. But, we haven’t paid for it all yet. So we are going to wait and see.

MarchDaffs · 01/03/2020 18:10

I'd imagine part of it is medical treatment. If you're going to an EHIC covered country you'll get the same cover as a national would (fucking good job this happened this year not next...) but that's not always as comprehensive as the NHS. You might still end up with substantial charges if you need treatment. It also doesn't cover repatriation and/or an extended stay if you're too unwell to travel when planned. And of course lots of people would be looking at non-EHIC countries too.

Doesn't affect me as we had already planned a UK break. I could cancel now with full refund but haven't.

Northernsoullover · 01/03/2020 18:11

We are going to Spain. Its in July so will it will either be everywhere or fizzled out. I don't want to cancel my trip only for one of us to catch it on the train at home.

Porcupineinwaiting · 01/03/2020 18:12

Me I hope as I booked flights 3 weeks ago. Just shopping round for travel insurance now.

Abraid2 · 01/03/2020 18:13

I will carry on following the advice of the FCO, actual doctors and scientists such as the chief medical officer. They might know more than Anna Anxious on MN, so if they don’t advise against travel, I’ll carry on.

NotStayingIn · 01/03/2020 18:15

I had a trip to China booked for Easter. The Chinese airline gave me a full refund (not sure if they actually cancelled the whole flight.) Now going to Devon instead.

If my holiday has been to anywhere else I probably would have just gone. But now that my trip has been cancelled I am not rebooking another foreign destination just yet. I’ll wait and see for a while.

Already booked for Easter and the summer - a couple of different places in Africa. They were booked long before the coronavirus hit the headlines and we haven't considered cancelling.

scissy · 01/03/2020 18:23

I wonder if the uptick in UK bookings was due to Brexit uncertainty earlier this year? Before we knew we were going to be in the transition period this summer we were tempted to book a UK holiday this year as well to avoid hassle (we did last year and it all came to nothing!) Covid19 is relatively recent.

topcat2014 · 01/03/2020 18:24

@Simonjt envious of Ottawa, used to go there with work

DeeCeeCherry · 01/03/2020 18:24

I'm just back from a month abroad. Going away again in May & September. I'm not worried at all. Best I can do is as per usual - - maintain handwashing, eat sensibly. That's it.

eMmAsuper8 · 01/03/2020 18:25

@notstayingin was your flight with Air China? I also was booked for Easter and the refund process started last week but they said it could take 1-3 months. Have you received yours and did it take long?

Thanks

MarchDaffs · 01/03/2020 18:25

Could also be the pound against the euro scissy, a lot of people got bitten last year.

Coquohvan · 01/03/2020 18:25

We’ve got 5 European holidays booked. First on long weekend in Venice end of the month. Got good annual insurance just need to see what happens nearer the time and what our Government advice is for travel.
In France just now travelled from Rome to here 8 days ago. Home to Uk Tuesday. We both feel fine and our temperature is normal.

ruby2019missyou · 01/03/2020 18:25

I booked flights in January to go to Genoa (Italy) at the end of this month. Luckily I haven't booked hotels yet. I guess that's a holiday I'm not going to go on and money I'm not getting back.
