Who’s carrying on as normal re summer holidays?

My dh, who is usually very un-bothered by pretty much anything, doesn’t want to book a foreign holiday for summer as he thinks it’s silly in the current situation re coronavirus. I’m not too bothered so long as we go away so agreed to book a UK holiday and wait and see and possibly book a last minute foreign holiday if things have changed in July/august.

Went online yesterday and was shocked at how very few places are left at our chosen UK destination. We go here every year anyway and there are usually lots of options available at this time.

I can only surmise that people feel the same as us and aren’t willing to risk booking foreign holidays so everywhere is getting snapped up quickly.
Have you changed your usual plans to holiday in UK this year or do you think it’s all a bit ridiculous and intend to carry on as usual going abroad?
YANBU - staying in UK
YABU - going abroad as usual

Hoping by summer it will have fizzed out. End March April will be the big test if the other countries patterns similar.

AuntieStella · 02/03/2020 07:27

We usually book late anyhow, and usually choose British holidays (mainline and Channel Islands)

Other than skiing, but we didn't ski this year for separate reasons.

We'll decide nearer the time.

It could be really good for the British tourist industry. Some big attractions will have numbers well down, but smaller resorts could well benefit.

Butterbear86 · 02/03/2020 07:29

What if you had a pre existing condition - would you go then? Dh wants to go but I’m t1 and death rate for us approaches 10%.
It’s not that I think the U.K. will be any less infected, but I’d rather die here than abroad. Less hassle for everyone else than trying to get me back on a plane.

Standrewsschool · 02/03/2020 07:32

We’re watching and waiting, so will book late.

AhoyMrBeaver · 02/03/2020 07:39

Yes, I will be. I'm not going to stop living because I could increase my chances of dying by doing so. It's a measured risk.

Beebumble2 · 02/03/2020 07:42

Going to France in May. We have postponed booking the other two holidays to Spain, in June and Vietnam in October. Waiting to see what happens.
It’s not the threat of the virus that bothers us, but being stuck somewhere.

Skyejuly · 02/03/2020 07:48

Already had uk holiday booked.

Wehttam · 02/03/2020 07:49

Thankfully nothing booked abroad yet and it’s staying that way at least until after the first wave is over. If by end of April the UK doesn’t seem completely infected we may consider a summer staycay. Now we just wait this out.

Anyone intending to go to Italy anytime soon be very careful, they may close up the border with you on the wrong side of it.

Equimum · 02/03/2020 07:50

We book to go to Indonesia in June before this kicked off. We are watching and waiting now, but will our travel insurance will pay out if we can’t go. I’d be more reluctant to book now, though, as would hate to be quarantined in a hotel room!

alittleprivacy · 02/03/2020 07:50

I wouldn't book anything now. It will likely end up being a source of stress over the next few months as you are left to wonder if you pissed that money away, if you should still go, if will get back, what happens if you are sick abroad, what happens if you end up in quarantine. If you are family without a stay at home parent, there is also a very good chance that you will use up your holiday time on childcare if your child's school shuts for 2-4 weeks, if a teacher or pupil is a confirmed case. Or if elderly relatives form part of your childcare, you may need to revise that as official guidance in Ireland is in the event of an outbreak, children are to be kept away from the elderly as children as almost asymptotic but highly infectious.

If I had something booked, I'd probably continue as normal. But booking now instead of waiting is seriously foolhardy.

Shakirasma · 02/03/2020 07:51

We are going to Cyprus in July. Tbh I think that if this virus becomes the pandemic they say it could then we will probably have had it by then and the days of quarantine will be behind us.

If I'm wrong, well I took out insurance before the coronavirus news hit, so if the official advise is not to travel then I should be covered. Other than that we will be going.

Bringringbring12 · 02/03/2020 08:07

Me!!
Away in April to Spain
Children to Greece with dad in July

Can’t wait.

bellabasset · 02/03/2020 08:14

My trip to Italy was booked for July before this so am hoping the coronovirus will be over by then.

I would delay booking abroad at the moment though.

BeansOnToast4T · 02/03/2020 08:25

I have had flights book for this August since October but have only paid a deposit on the villa, balance is due end of June. I will be watching the situation and keeping an open mind.
If I didn't have a booking I would be holding off booking for now.

alloutoffucks · 02/03/2020 08:39

Will probably go abroad, but just waiting to see before booking.

fussychica · 02/03/2020 08:52

I have two overseas holidays booked. The first is at the end of April and I am getting a bit concerned it may all go pear shaped but if I can go I will.

It's via the ferry rather than flying and then touring through France and Spain for a couple of months so lots of prebooked elements so cancelling some of it would be easy and other elements only possible with a big financial loss.

RiftGibbon · 02/03/2020 08:55

I can't vote as my "normal" is to holiday in the UK.

Singlebutmarried · 02/03/2020 09:07

Waiting to book a last minute deal if we don’t end up going away with friends (UK based).

Sweetbabycheezits · 02/03/2020 09:15

Holiday to the US booked for July, planning a trip to Portugal in June, and then a week somewhere in the UK in August. Not worried.

woodchuck99 · 02/03/2020 09:38

I haven't booked anything yet and don't intend to until nearer the time. It's not just the risk of coronavirus itself but also the risk that you may end up somewhere that ends up in lockdown. Not being able to go out of the house is one thing that been stuck in a hotel room and being unable to prepare food yourself as has happened to some people sounds like a nightmare.

Hobbesmanc · 02/03/2020 10:18

I think we will be going ahead with a trip to the States in June- and we went to Venice for the first weekend of Carnivale- although that was before the outbreak.

We also have a landmark trip to Asia booked in November including time in mainland China. If we have to cancel then hopefully insurance will cover but its a while off

Aweebawbee · 02/03/2020 10:21

Surely it depends on where you are going and how you are travelling. I probably wouldn't be too keen on the idea of flying to a densely populated tourist resort in Italy, or a city break in Tehran.

Porcupineinwaiting · 02/03/2020 10:30

It also depends on what the situation is then, where the virus is then - and whether you've had it or not -Awee. At this point, all we can do is intend to carry on as normal. And follow FO advice when the time comes.

Aweebawbee · 02/03/2020 10:38

Apparently there have been cases now of people getting Covid 9 for a second time.

Porcupineinwaiting · 02/03/2020 10:40

Yes but very few.
