Who’s carrying on as normal re summer holidays?

My dh, who is usually very un-bothered by pretty much anything, doesn’t want to book a foreign holiday for summer as he thinks it’s silly in the current situation re coronavirus. I’m not too bothered so long as we go away so agreed to book a UK holiday and wait and see and possibly book a last minute foreign holiday if things have changed in July/august.

Went online yesterday and was shocked at how very few places are left at our chosen UK destination. We go here every year anyway and there are usually lots of options available at this time.

I can only surmise that people feel the same as us and aren’t willing to risk booking foreign holidays so everywhere is getting snapped up quickly.
Have you changed your usual plans to holiday in UK this year or do you think it’s all a bit ridiculous and intend to carry on as usual going abroad?
YANBU - staying in UK
YABU - going abroad as usual

I have 3 holidays abroad booked for this year and I am having a rethink. I’m not normally a worrier but I do keep thinking about the virus.

GreenTulips · 01/03/2020 18:31

flu normally reduces in the warmer weather anyway.....

Yet it infects people from warmer countries?

How does that work?

Shufflebumnessie · 01/03/2020 18:32

We booked our August 2020 holiday to the USA back in April 2019, so way before the Corona virus. Fingers crossed we'll still be able to go as we've been planning/saving for it since 2015.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 01/03/2020 18:33

I'm booked to go abroad the last week in July, I booked last year though.

Too early for me to say what I will do, I will reassess nearer the time. I'm not cancelling at this stage.

Jessicabrassica · 01/03/2020 18:37

No passports here and work dithering about requirements over school holidays so I can't book anything anyway. Will be cross if we can't get into a campsite in the UK though.

MinnieMountain · 01/03/2020 18:39

DH is going to France this month, I'm going to Slovenia in July. We're not changing our plans.

We happened to have just UK holidays with DS left this year, but we'd not change if the holidays were in other countries.

RedWineForMePlease · 01/03/2020 18:43

I guess I'm the only person who has a holiday booked to China? Grin

To be fair it's not until November, so it'll either be cancelled or it'll be mostly over after the hot weather hits. Either way I won't lose out financially.

I have some European travel booked but I'll just see what happens.

soundsystem · 01/03/2020 18:43

We're going to France at Easter, and - like precious posters - we'll go unless official advice is not to travel. We've got good travel insurance, so if we end up having to self-isolate abroad, so be it!

We haven't booked Summer yet as DH is awaiting confirmation about a work assignment abroad which is looking like it might be cancelled

maddiemookins16mum · 01/03/2020 18:44

Already booked for September (did it in Jan).

JaceLancs · 01/03/2020 18:45

1 holiday abroad booked for July will be going unless advised not to

Frenchw1fe · 01/03/2020 18:47

I live in France and am due to be in uk for dd’s wedding in summer. I will be coming over regardless. I may have to practice swimming the channel!

madeyemoodysmum · 01/03/2020 18:48

We are Europe may and uk summer hols. I'll go as long as it's allowed.

It will be interesting to see how the virus spreads in Africa. Hot climate etc. It hasn't spread to much in southern Italy unless I've just not been informed in news etc. I was in Bologna recently and it felt like a warm spring day so southern Italy would be even warmer.

Another thread to hide.

TeetotalKoala · 01/03/2020 18:51

France booked for August. Hasn't even occurred to us to cancel. We booked it in January.

It's here in the UK too, so short of quarantining yourself permanently, you're always at risk.

Gogolego · 01/03/2020 18:53

Got a holiday booked in France for August
Have various people abroad coming over to visit us before then

TeetotalKoala · 01/03/2020 18:54

We've also come back from Austria, where the gate next to us at the airport was loading an Air China flight. We weren't in a high risk part of Austria, but still, there's always risk there.

I can't get worked up about it if I'm honest.

oohnicevase · 01/03/2020 18:57

I booked mine in November so I'm going 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

CoraPirbright · 01/03/2020 18:57

We booked a week away in July back in Jan before the corona virus hit. I am assuming that by July either the entire globe will be in lock-down or it will all be over so, either way, the decision will be made.

DesLynamsMoustache · 01/03/2020 18:58

We have a trip to France booked for July. My worry is more around flights being cancelled as opposed to worries about the actual virus, as I think if it reaches the stage where travel to such a mainstream region of France is locked down then it'll be in the UK anyway. And maybe we could be quarantined in our villa with a pool Grin (I jest. Mostly)

sonjadog · 01/03/2020 19:01

We are going to Canada in July. Already booked and will be paid for this coming week. No intention of cancelling (unless when the time comes it would be inadvisable to travel) and I am not much worried about it.

Why would staying in the UK be better? Surely the virus will be as much in the UK as elsewhere?

KoalasandRabbit · 01/03/2020 19:03

School trip to Sorrento in June, will depend if school are running it whether DD goes or not. About £850 to lose if cancelled.

Summer holiday is to Thailand and Malaysia - not sure if we will need to cancel atm - £2.4k non-refundable. Not especially worried about catching virus just worried about the chaos around it - the refusing boarding if a temperature, quarantines, lockdowns, tourist sites closed etc, could end up stranded somewhere and not clear if insurance would help.

Cosyhusky · 01/03/2020 19:03

Holiday booked to Majorca in June. Booked a couple of weeks ago. Still planning to go!

katewhinesalot · 01/03/2020 19:03

There were several people wearing face masks at the airport yesterday and more people using the anti bac stations. I also saw people washing their hands for longer. People are definitely beginning to sit up and take notice.

I felt comfortable coming on this holiday. Not so sure about our future booked holidays. Also the kids are going in the next couple of months. Bit concerned about them. One has to make more financial investments in his backpacking adventure. He's still booking parts of it but it's going to be a major financial loss if he doesn't go and the FO haven't officially banned it.

LuckyLickitung · 01/03/2020 19:03

If we were booked to go abroad, we'd carry on as normal.

We had vaguely intended to go away at Easter, but didn't have a booking and have now booked in the UK. Mainly because I'd rather risk being ill in the UK and in a couple of hours travelling distance from home rather than dealing with different health systems and risks of enforced quarantine. My immediate family appears to be low risk, and if we get it, we get it, the same as any illness.

The summer was likely to be in the UK anyway. Probably worth a wait and see on how it spreads/ vaccines etc.

PinkiOcelot · 01/03/2020 19:03

Booked for Greece in July but before all of this started. Don’t think I would have booked if known about this. I’ll wait and see.
