I've just chastised my mum for going to church! She's 80 and has underlying health conditions 🙄

ofwarren · 01/03/2020 11:11

Are churches still doing all the hand shaking sign of peace thing @Bercows?

Abraid2 · 01/03/2020 11:12

My mother is recovering from chemo and is 82. I wouldn’t dream of telling her not to go to church. Or attend a medical appointment.

YoursTunbridgeWells · 01/03/2020 11:12

Oh and re: the confirmed case who I understand went into school before self-isolating etc.

I do think laws need to be enacted to show anyone breaking the self-isolation rules will face a conviction.

Abraid2 · 01/03/2020 11:12

...unless she was in a hotspot.

MissPoldark · 01/03/2020 11:12

The strain on the nhs cannot be proven until we have an emerging picture and may not be any where as near as is being said. Italy don't seem to having this issue as far as I know it's being well managed?

I’m not sure about that. They have over 100 serious/critical cases in the region at the moment and that’s just over the course of a week. It’s really worrying how quickly things can escalate and health services can become overwhelmed.

SirVixofVixHall · 01/03/2020 11:12

I have read, and also John Campbell says, that asthma isn’t a worry . I have asthmatic friends and family so I found that very reassuring.

Sassenach85 · 01/03/2020 11:13

Paramedics with face masks just seems sensible but the dr I know is in Urology, her contact is with specific patients which made me wonder if they foresee this being very widespread very soon

LONDON - Chevron announced that one of their employees who had reported a flu-like illness in their London Canary Wharf office has tested negative for coronavirus.

When the employee first began exhibiting symptoms, it prompted Chevron to send staff home. t.co/QcOYDXtdqJ t.co/Pbcq29CbxW

Someone asked earlier about any changes in hospital regarding cancer wards. I had an appointment Friday with my oncologist and was asked had I been out of the country in the last 14 days. They were making a note of the country/region and the patients name. This had only started happening last week, the previous week I wasn’t asked.

SistemaAddict · 01/03/2020 11:18

As far as I know they still are shaking hands and sharing the communion wine cup 🤢 She phoned me from the car park as she was waiting to go in and therefore has gone back home. We were at church for Ash Wednesday mass and nothing was said about the virus. If she gets ill there is only me to look after her and I'm a single parent of 3 with no one to help me either. And I don't drive so having looked after her several times before for months due to fractures I know how badly this would affect our family.

ShanghaiDiva · 01/03/2020 11:18

@YoursTunbridgeWells
Yes, food is getting through and water too (we cannot drink the tap water). Water, for example, cannot be delivered to your house as non residents cannot enter the compound and must be delivered to the entrance and you have to collect it. Some supermarkets remained open so it was and is possible to get food, but there were temp checks at the entrance and wearing a mask is compulsory. Shelves are stocked, although there were some shortages at end of January, and the Chinese seem to be managing supply chains to ensure products are available.

Scotland saying it's well prepared.

@SirVixofVixHall Are you sure? If it affects breathing then surely people with respiratory disorders are going to be worse affected? Asthmatics get the seasonal flu jab on the NHS as normal flu is riskier for them.

ofwarren · 01/03/2020 11:24

Wow, that's great @MaxNormal!

BiBiBirdie · 01/03/2020 11:28

Yes @YoursTunbridgeWells
I've said this and got a world of grief over it.

SistemaAddict · 01/03/2020 11:30

Everything I've read says king term conditions such as asthma are likely to be worse affected. We get the flu vaccine each year.

OldQueen1969 · 01/03/2020 11:34

Just seen this in the Guardian live coverage:

My questions are - whereabouts was he working and if he contracted the virus in the UK how? Does just focusing on the people on his flight suggest he may have picked it up from another traveller? I'm sure TPTB are doing a trace backwards in all areas but lack of specifics really bugs me.

"A man who has tested positive for coronavirus in Hong Kong, flew from London on Thursday after working in the UK, according to local reports.

The news site Caixin reported that a 35-year-old man who had been working in the UK flew from London to Hong Kong on 27 February and arrived at noon on 28 February.

He then took a ferry to Shekou, near Shenzhen and then drove to Shenzen, it reported. On Saturday he developed symptoms of a cough and fever and went to the hospital where he was confirmed positive for the virus, it said.

He is being treated in isolation in a hospital in Shenzhen. According to documents seen by Caixin, health authorities in Shenzhen notified provincial officials in Guangdong as well as health authorities in Hong Kong on Sunday. 1.

The public broadcaster RTHK reported that the Centre for Health Protection is appealing to anyone who travelled business class on Cathay Pacific flight CX250 from London to Hong Kong on Friday to get in touch. It said it had received notice from Guangdong authorities that a passenger on that flight was confirmed to have Covid-19."

I have the flu jab each year due to asthma and when I get a bad cold it can often turn into bronchitis. I’d like the think the virus is less risky for those with asthma but I don’t think that’s the case. As far as I understand it attacks your lungs, and mine don’t work as well as a ‘healthy ‘ persons.

SistemaAddict · 01/03/2020 11:38

He must have contracted it here unless he's been anywhere else? Due to the long incubation period I think we'll see a lot more cases suddenly appear.

I've tried to explain the situation to all the dc and emphasise Hand washing. Dc who is going on the trip is now in floods of tears thinking they can't go even though I've said I am just worried at the moment and haven't said they can't.

LarkDescending · 01/03/2020 11:41

Another 38 cases for Germany (total 117). Rising fast.

EgonSpengler2020 · 01/03/2020 11:42

Everything I've read says king term conditions such as asthma are likely to be worse affected. We get the flu vaccine each year.

Respiratory problems are less significant co morbidities in relation to Covid 19 than cardiovascular problems and diabetes. This doesn't mean that they are not a risk but not as much as other things.

So if your are young and suffer asthma in isolation then you are likely to be okay, but it could be a rough ride.

If however you are older and suffering with COPD, then you are likely to also have cardiovascular problems either from having been a smoker and this causing the damage to blood vessels alongside the COPD, or COPD causing strain on the heart resulting in some right sided heart failure.

ofwarren · 01/03/2020 11:42

In the Guardian
The worst-case scenario is looking increasingly likely. We’ve now seen cases on six continents, apparently “silent” – that is, at least partly asymptomatic – chains of human-to-human transmission both inside and outside China, with additional countries reporting cases within the last week – bringing the total to 47 – and new, accelerating outbreaks in Iran, Italy and South Korea.

@OldQueen1969
It’s a bit woolly isn’t it. It says he’d been working in the U.K., so I’m assuming he was visiting here on business and returning to HK? So we can’t assume where he was actually infected.

Bool · 01/03/2020 11:44

The potential loss of face caused the cover up. Is coming out now. See below article. I fully sympathise with the people of China and know they are now doing their absolute best. But I don’t have any time for their government and that is what makes me so scared - I just don’t know what numbers to believe. Hence looking to Italy (unfortunate as that now is) will tell us much more that I trust.
