Sing Happy Birthday while you wash your hands.

I had the same chat with a group of 5 year olds on Friday.

Remember though, we're prepared...

DonkeyKong2019 · 01/03/2020 09:04

I reckon 27 total

Puppy78 · 01/03/2020 09:04

I'm struggling to know what to think. There are only 23 cases in the UK at the moment - do people think that there are actually thousands? I understand it is a very serious illness but numbers are currently extremely low, aren't they? We are due to travel to Australia over the Easter holiday - at the moment there seems to be no risk in going, right?

WHO OFFICIAL ADVICE

ofwarren · 01/03/2020 09:05

@UnitDare there are 31 cases in Spain

TreesSandSea · 01/03/2020 09:06

WaterSheep it’s twice though, right? At least 20 seconds. He didn’t even get that right.

BiBiBirdie · 01/03/2020 09:07

I'm still not leaving the house. I usually go to church and then the supermarket but nope.
I've emailed school and told them I am going ahead with what myself and the Headteacher discussed and agreed with the DCs.
DP slept on the sofa last night and we are still not speaking. If he dared go against me he will find his shit on the front doorstep for him. No one and I mean no one is going to put my son at risk.

Reallybadidea · 01/03/2020 09:07

I don't know whether to laugh or cry at this quote from the 'boss of an NHS Trust' (according to The Guardian)

“About 17% of people who contract the virus need some sort of medical intervention. So if this properly catches hold you have a 17% increase in the number of people coming through the NHS’s door, and then everything falls over.”

Bool · 01/03/2020 09:08

Am I right in observing that this is not spreading in the Southern Hemisphere eg warmer countries. Does that mean Covid-19 doesn’t like warmth?

WaterSheep · 01/03/2020 09:08

it’s twice though, right?

It is indeed, although with the 5 year olds making them wash whilst singing it once is a vast improvement. Grin

Wehttam · 01/03/2020 09:08

Re the movement and reorganisation of medical staff perhaps, I think it could make sense if we reach a tipping point. It would be necessary if the staff get infected themselves.

On a separate note, has anyone noticed any change in policy regarding visitors to cancer hospitals or wards? They need to be taking exceptional precautions, my mum had several prolonged stays a few years ago and the last thing needed in those places is this.

Springinsight · 01/03/2020 09:08

Re hand washing they need to point out that re touching the same tap turn on, off however will un do the good work?

Why not have proper hand-wash people on to tell people how to do it properly?

He also said, Italy banned travel from China and yet they got it worse.

MrsStrangerThing · 01/03/2020 09:09

To those asking about travel, I am pretty rational about this whole thing(I think!) and very much against a few hysterical posts I have seen. However I personally would be discouraging any loved one from travelling right now. I appreciate this won't be the view of most on here judging by the disparaging remarks regarding the NHS, but personally - I would rather be close to home in case I need to self isolate, am unwell or crucially need any medical treatment. I appreciate many here who don't seem to trust the NHS would presumably prefer to contract the virus in a different country.

DonkeyKong2019 · 01/03/2020 09:09

@BiBiBirdie You are being hysterical.

HasaDigaEebowai · 01/03/2020 09:09

Mrsstrangerthing I do understand - really I do. Particularly given the number of medic friends I have! But this is an emergency. I'm not saying its fair but if we want to contain this I can understand why the government is making this request.

They're not forcing the issue - yet. But if they need to then I suspect ultimately they will. The rest of us simply don't have the skills and the basic medical knowledge. Im not saying its simple or that its in any way ideal.

redstararnie76 · 01/03/2020 09:10

This all seems much too little, too late - I'm very aware that panic achieves nothing, however surely it is better to prepare for the worse case scenario and this so-called battleplan is just insulting in it's under-reaction and inappropriate-ness.
Sure, if there was a veritable army of retired professionals just waiting to be called on, they would already have been recruited to help - not like there's already a serious social care crisis in the making?!

ShanghaiDiva · 01/03/2020 09:10

The only country to show they are capable of managing this outbreak is China and they have implemented some incredibly tough measures. However, it does seem to be working- no new cases in my city (population of 7 million) for over 7 days and no deaths in my province (70 million).
I travelled to the uk two weeks ago via HK and ime the uk was being pretty lax at the time re hygiene standards at Heathrow etc, no temp checks and there were plenty of people coming from China on the plane.

AvocadoOwl · 01/03/2020 09:10

There are only 23 cases in the UK at the moment - do people think that there are actually thousands?

I'm not sure about thousands but the fact that a few cases have been picked up by the 100 GP surgeries screening anyone with flu symptoms would suggest it is significantly higher than 23.

Quartz2208 · 01/03/2020 09:10

Viruses often prefer colder weather yes

Yep the NHS can’t cope at the moment. The problem is it’s wont be 17% it will be more because gauging when you need medical care is hard. What doctors think vs public is c different

EnidBlyton · 01/03/2020 09:11

how about drying your hands?
is that a worry? in your own home? i guess not

Themythsweliveby · 01/03/2020 09:11

If we end up in a situation with thousands of cases like Wuhan, quite possible, especially in the London area due to the nature of public transport, then we need a Chinese style action plan to ride it out at home and have goods and anti vitals delivered. If we get some guidance now on what to expect if you end up in this situation lots of people might panic unnecessarily? All I want to know though is that the government are stockpiling the drugs and seriously planning to treat as many people as possible at home.

Puppy78 · 01/03/2020 09:12

@MrsStrangerThing Thank you! I had some family last night say they would go ahead, but I'm worried about getting stuck in another country for weeks and DS missing school.

@BiBiBirdie Does your child have compromised immunity or health issues? If not children aren't seriously affected.

MrsStrangerThing · 01/03/2020 09:12

Rasa, I just think its very hypocritical of people to support that who are also saying they plan to hide away. They want us to put our own lives and families at risk to protect them? I wouldn't mind if there was even a bit of gratitude, but most on here are very much being disparaging about the NHS. It is incredibly selfish.

SistemaAddict · 01/03/2020 09:12

@Ken hypertension means that your heart in particular is under greater pressure. Medication for hypertension has side effects that can affect the kidneys which is why it's necessary to have regular blood tests to check kidney function. So organs that are already under extra pressure are not going to cope as well with fighting a virus such as coronavirus.

ofwarren · 01/03/2020 09:13

@DonkeyKong2019 Bibi's son is ill. She is NOT being hysterical.
