The issue I see with the plan to increase numbers of HCP are...

The glaringly obvious problem of using retired HCPs from the most vulnerable age groups, putting them at increased risk of infection and death.

Using military medics, is a great idea, and the ones that are full time military will be a great asset, but how many of them are there? A large proportion of the military HCPs are reservist/TA and already working in the NHS.

Getting part time staff to increase hours, great idea except many are part time for good reason.. . Childcare, health issues, shear exhaustion, these issues haven't gone away.

Overtime.... The trust I work for had been propped up by overtime work for the last decade. There are only so many hours one person can do. But now worryingly if some one who normally works 37.5 hours full time plus one to two shifts per week overtime (not uncommon where I work), so an additional 11.5 to 23 hours a week, if they go sick with Covid then you are loosing the equivalent of 1.5 members of staff from the rota.

Student HCPs are now mostly paying for the "pleasure" of being on placement, so they are rightly going to be pissed off if they are expected to pick up the slack, and should be suitably paid for their time.

Basically it is a mess.

Some believe the death rate could be as high as 10%

This is the sort of thing that I think is enormously unhelpful on these threads. Claims like this, not backed up by any evidence, just cause panic. Some particular at-risk groups may have mortality rates approaching this level. I have seen nothing to suggest anywhere that this is likely to be the mortality rate for the general population, let alone for those with no risk factors.

Heebeejeebie · 01/03/2020 10:54

@jenasuarus, none of us would tbh. For one it is locked away. Two it comes in massive bottles and the sanitisers on the walls are 'topped up'. Three, it wouldn't be worth your job to be sacked for stealing from work. We aren't even allowed a paracetamol!

Even anti bac wipes are locked away in the store cupboards.

EnidBlyton · 01/03/2020 10:56

hmm, i wonder if those who top them up are thinking of blackmarket? not inconceivable.

boredboredbored123 · 01/03/2020 10:59

@Reallybadidea
I wasn't the posted who mentioned 10%, but the Worldometer is saying that out of all cases which have reached an outcome, 93% have recovered and 7% have died.
To me, 10% is no more outrageous a claim than the 1% which is being claimed elsewhere. ?

ShanghaiDiva · 01/03/2020 11:00

@Wehttam
I think the Chinese will be extremely strict regarding the new regulations. I live in China and know how extreme the consequences will be for non compliance.
This is a massive loss of face for China and the economic consequences are enormous.

SistemaAddict · 01/03/2020 11:02

I'm going to go up to the shops and see if I can get any hand gel. We do have some somewhere in the house but not much.
I wish the school would postpone the trip as if I' the only parent who pulls out their child I'm going to look odd.

ofwarren · 01/03/2020 11:02

Do you notice how all the cases seem to come in a flurry around the same time of day now. Not just the UK ones.
At first it was continuous alerts to cases but now it's quiet all morning.

ofwarren · 01/03/2020 11:04

#Marr: Is it conceivable cities could be quarantined to fight spread of #coronavirus?

Health Secretary Matt Hancock: "There’s clearly a huge economic and social downside to that but we don’t take anything off the table at this stage"

EnidBlyton · 01/03/2020 11:04

I thought the timing was always 2.00 pm,
they need to keep it under some sort of control to lessen panic and make sure the facts are right.

ChipotleBlessing · 01/03/2020 11:05

The WHO report says the death rate for cases diagnosed after 1st February in China is actually below 1%. Worldometer is not a reliable way of making these calculations. Early in the epidemic in China the death rate was much higher, but as they learnt more about the virus and how to treat it, they got it to below 1%. So that should be achievable across the parts of the world with developed healthcare systems, even without further developments in treatment.

People should stop scaremongering.

MissPoldark · 01/03/2020 11:05

*I don't know whether to laugh or cry at this quote from the 'boss of an NHS Trust' (according to The Guardian)

“About 17% of people who contract the virus need some sort of medical intervention. So if this properly catches hold you have a 17% increase in the number of people coming through the NHS’s door, and then everything falls over.”*

Is that what they said? They need to brush up on their maths. Even if it is as high as 17% of cases needing medical intervention, the percentage increase of people “coming through the door” isn’t the same and is likely to be much higher.

EnidBlyton · 01/03/2020 11:05

the over 60s avoid places where you might meet people who are sick?
eek.
cancel those hospital appointments

Jenasaurus · 01/03/2020 11:06

Ive just cancelled my holiday in Croatia, lost £400 (deposit) but if I waited any longer I would have lost more money as I am on the cusp of the 70 days before travel period. My decision wasn't based on the destination as Croatia has less cases than the UK, my decision was based on being at a busy airport, surrounded by other travellers that may have come or be going to a more at risk destination. It is also based on the fact my DD who I was going with is immune compromised and earlier this year was hospitalised following flu that damaged her kidneys. I realised instead of looking forward to our holiday as I should have been, I was beginning to dread it. I have told my DD and she is OK about it, and I have promised her I will take her away when things settle down again.

ShanghaiDiva · 01/03/2020 11:07

@YoursTunbridgeWells
Not true, they locked down Wuhan and parts of Hubei, but the rest of China was not operating as normal. I live 300 km from Wuhan and everything was shut : restaurants, schools, cinemas, offices closed, most factories closed, restrictions on movements between cities, restrictions at the airport, flights cancelled..etc
Only from Feb 24th have office workers in my city started to go back to work.
Some areas had even tougher controls eg hangzhou and Guangdong province.

ChipotleBlessing · 01/03/2020 11:07

@notjustacigar yes, the Carey handgels have enough alcohol in them.

cheninblanc · 01/03/2020 11:08

In heading into London today with hand gel and tissues. The strain on the nhs cannot be proven until we have an emerging picture and may not be any where as near as is being said. Italy don't seem to having this issue as far as I know it's being well managed?

Number12 · 01/03/2020 11:08

I just read the wokingham paper and it said this

"A STAFF member at a Woodley primary school has tested positive for coronavirus.

They were on holiday in one of the affected countries last week, and had self-isolated themselves on return."

It doesn't say they ignored the guidelines set by the government and went to work in a school.... Why are some of the students now self isolating?? Apologies if this has been covered this thread moves fast! Did the teacher go to work upon return or not?

NotJustACigar · 01/03/2020 11:09

Thanks ChipotleBlessing.

ofwarren · 01/03/2020 11:09

I'm on about the results from the rest of Europe Enid

Number12 · 01/03/2020 11:09

I mention the wokingham paper as pp used it as a confirmed source for teacher ignoring guidelines upon return from hold.

Jenasaurus · 01/03/2020 11:09

In my work setting the Hand Gel is in mini bottles on peoples desks so a different set up to you Hessa

Kokeshi123 · 01/03/2020 11:10

don’t get worked up over the wild animals bans. They will make a law and no one will adhere to it. Animals are very divisive and easily distract people’s attention. Worrying about wild animals in China is like worrying about the rain, pointless.

Bollocks. Wet markets are a key source of zoonotic disease spillovers--they are not a "distraction." The CCP should have cracked down on them years ago.

YoursTunbridgeWells · 01/03/2020 11:10

@ShanghaiDiva I stand corrected thank you. I still want to know where the food is coming from though. Surely there must be some farming and production on, some trucks delivering food to the stores which are permitted to open?

Abraid2 · 01/03/2020 11:10

You can make hand sanitiser with surgical spirit, aloe Vera gel plus tea tree oil.
