The issue I see with the plan to increase numbers of HCP are...
The glaringly obvious problem of using retired HCPs from the most vulnerable age groups, putting them at increased risk of infection and death.
Using military medics, is a great idea, and the ones that are full time military will be a great asset, but how many of them are there? A large proportion of the military HCPs are reservist/TA and already working in the NHS.
Getting part time staff to increase hours, great idea except many are part time for good reason.. . Childcare, health issues, shear exhaustion, these issues haven't gone away.
Overtime.... The trust I work for had been propped up by overtime work for the last decade. There are only so many hours one person can do. But now worryingly if some one who normally works 37.5 hours full time plus one to two shifts per week overtime (not uncommon where I work), so an additional 11.5 to 23 hours a week, if they go sick with Covid then you are loosing the equivalent of 1.5 members of staff from the rota.
Student HCPs are now mostly paying for the "pleasure" of being on placement, so they are rightly going to be pissed off if they are expected to pick up the slack, and should be suitably paid for their time.
Basically it is a mess.
