I wish there would be a global decision to stop all international travel for 4-8 weeks. Ask all people that can isolate / work from home to do so.

Nicepud · 01/03/2020 21:36

Not sure if it was the best idea to dust off my copy of 'The Stand' this evening. Can't put it down though!

Maybe I'll break out Tolkien after as a form of brain bleach.

Cykotine storm is usually the fatal effect. I’m not a physician so can someone clarify how this works when it affects immunosuppressed people? Do they still get the Cykotine storm or is that only for those whose healthy immune systems go into overdrive?

NEW: Armenia closes schools across the country for 1 week to prevent the spread of coronavirus; the country reported its 1st case earlier today - ARKA

GPwife2411 · 01/03/2020 21:39

@Llamallamadingdon and @Needtobepositive - my oldest DD is also type 1. I spoke to her team last week about what we should do differently and they were singularly unhelpful! DD was diagnosed 3 years ago.

Wehttam · 01/03/2020 21:40

Nicepud The Stand was amazing reading before this, now it’s too prophetic.

fedup21 · 01/03/2020 21:40

Here in Switzerland the government say they have no plans for mass school closures because it would put the older relatives who would step in to help with childcare at increased risk of infection

NEW: Armenia closes schools across the country for 1 week to prevent the spread of coronavirus; the country reported its 1st case earlier today

Interesting to see such different approaches from countries.

tigerbear · 01/03/2020 21:41

Wow @ofwarren that’s pretty decisive action on Armenia’s part, to do so after only 1 case!

I was just reading an old article on the Guardian website. It was written on the 20th January, note the mention of only 59 cases in China then. Really brings home how quickly this has spread:

**The finding that the outbreak of viral pneumonia in China that has struck 59 people may be caused by a coronavirus, the family of viruses behind Sars, which spread to 37 countries in 2003, causing global panic and killing more than 750 people, means that health authorities will be watching closely.

Wehttam · 01/03/2020 21:42

Different approaches because no one really knows what to do. It’s all guesswork or tiptoeing around the economy.

The Dublin school has decided to close for 14 days as 1 student has been diagnosed. At least they are taking a more decisive approach than the UK schools.

Jellykat · 01/03/2020 21:44

Odd to close just schools, what about colleges/ universities?

Wehttam · 01/03/2020 21:45

Tiger, I’m speculating here but I would expect the numbers were far higher at that point, remember the whistle blowing Doctor had started noticing something was amiss in December before he was reprimanded.

@Nicepud I watched Threads yesterday.

Unrelated subject matter but interesting info on our governments plans during emergency scenarios

SansaSnark · 01/03/2020 21:47

Actually, to me, for a country to close all schools with just one reported case seems a bit of an overreaction.

Another problem with closing schools early is that if there aren't that many cases straight away, there is pressure to reopen them. A PP on this thread said their school had planned to close for 2 weeks, but is now reopening this week due to pressure from parents.

Whereas by the end of this week, the situation may look very different and more people might be supportive of school closures. If people aren't supportive, it will be very difficult for a government to keep containment measures going long term.

I do think we need to be taking steps to control things- changing the travel advice, especially RE Italy (and also possibly France and Germany) is an important first step. I also think there's a case for stopping large public gatherings, like in France.

As I've said further upthread, I don't think it is the time for school closures yet- but we do need a halfway house where parents are able to keep kids home easily and more students are encouraged to self-isolate.

Newleafinspring · 01/03/2020 21:48

I do hope there has been information sharing between UK, other countries and China regarding the treatment plan. China has certainly learned a lot since January, the death rate lowed later. Especially outside Wuhan, some province have been done very successfully. For example, Zhejiang province which is near Shanghai, has 1205 cases so far, 1027 have recovered, and only 1 death so far.

meredithgrey1 · 01/03/2020 21:48

without naming we could be told they do/ do not have a chronic disease

But some people do know who they are. So if, for example, they said "the case in X town is a woman with chronic condition Y", then everyone who knows the person, and knows they've tested positive, now knows about their private health condition.
It can be done once there are more cases but while there are so few it's quite identifiable.

SansaSnark · 01/03/2020 21:48

I fully expect any UK schools with a diagnosed case to close, but as far as we know there are no cases of actual school students being diagnosed in the UK.

VivaLeBeaver · 01/03/2020 21:48

@Deux. here

That’s the original paper. I can’t remember where but I also read a discussion between medics saying how it looked like the virus was causing a massive inflammation/immune response in the lungs. Resulting inflammation causing the lungs to not function as well, causing hypoxia, respiratory issues, respiratory arrest. And that dampening down the immune response could help some people.

tigerbear · 01/03/2020 21:49

@Wehttam I agree, but just seeing the increase from 59 to nearly 80k in a matter of weeks really shocked me.

EgonSpengler2020 · 01/03/2020 21:50

@GPwife2411

Just watching the video you linked.

Off topic, but my take home point from it was the fact that measles has a reproductive number of 12-18, compared to flu with R0 of 1 and COVID19 with an R0 of 3-4 (estimated). That's crazy! Next time there is an anti vacc debate going on this is a fact I'm going to through out there!

AbsentmindedWoman · 01/03/2020 21:50

As a type 1 myself, I think probably the most important thing you can do diabetes-wise is to manage blood sugar as well as possible.

That sounds rather obvious but honestly, I think it is worth tightening up management as much as possible. Extra blood testing after meals for example, or many extra Libre scans if on that, trying to catch any spikes before they rise too high. Try to flatten the profile of the numbers as much as you can.

If your type 1 does get sick, their body has a better chance of coping and healing if sugars are/ have been in range.

The other useful thing you can do is do some thorough reading on DKA (diabetic ketoacidosis) if you are not familiar, because sickness can help tip a type 1 into DKA if sugars start to rocket. Make sure you have ketone testing strips, preferably blood ones but definitely urine ones.

DKA is scary but it does happen and mostly can be nipped in the bud but catching it as early as possible is really important. You need a way of checking ketones and making decisions about whether to go to hospital.

SansaSnark · 01/03/2020 21:50

The guardian have just posted a useful timeline of UK cases- might be interesting for people who haven't been following from the start: www.theguardian.com/world/live/2020/mar/01/coronavirus-latest-updates-coronavirus-live-updates-latest-news-china-wuhan-stock-markets-update-china-iran-us-australia-south-korea-japan
