@SansaSnark Italy's death rate is 29% based on deaths / (deaths + recovered) i.e. cases with a known outcome. In other words 1 in 3 people with this in Italy died and 2 recovered. This should come down as time moves on.
World death rate is 7%. This has come down from high 20s too.

LarkDescending · 01/03/2020 20:16

The list of US places with untraced-source cases is now: Illinois (specifically Chicago), Washington, Oregon, California.

Wehttam · 01/03/2020 20:16

Roominmyhouse if they haven’t been prohibited I would expect the week after they will be, so proceed with caution. Is a gig worth risking catching this thing?

HalfaMillion · 01/03/2020 20:17

Someone asked when Italy had 35 cases - on the 21st of Feb they only had 20. That is why I am scared

@PicsInRed

Wash hands for coronavirus prevention.

Open bathroom door with hand. Turn on tap with hand. Depress soap dispenser with hand. Wash hands, accidentally brushing past sink and tap and splashing back water as you wash. Turn off tap with hand. Dry hands under high powered air dryer, taking splashes to face and breathing in droplets. Exit bathroom by opening door with hand.

Touch face. Eat lunch.

^^^^yes, this with a cherry on top!^^^^^

Does anyone else have a partner who thinks you are totally over reacting and giving you the "its just flu" line. My dh was to!d by a hospital consultant that its just flu. In the same meeting a Consultant had just got back from Italy. Dh thinks im talking crap. My ds also has a lad in his group just back from Italy. Im also concerned that my youngest dc's teacher's dh is a gp in an area there is a confirmed case.

Did I miss the memo about going to Italy this half term?

NemophilistRebel · 01/03/2020 20:19

A medical professional in my family told me (a pregnant woman) that he sees no reason for me to fly this weekend Hmm

WaterSheep · 01/03/2020 20:19

A coach of Britons who have been in lockdown in a hotel in Tenerife since Tuesday have arrived at an airport terminal to fly home.

It is understood that the Brits have been booked on two different flights back to the UK, and they will have to self-isolate on their return.

Meruem · 01/03/2020 20:20

Does the whole household self isolate? So if one parents travels abroad and then returns, is it just that adult or the whole family?

Surely it should be the whole family, given the travelling adult will have likely passed it onto them. But I feel the advice we’re being given is pretty shit. When DS returns from Japan we are gonna self isolate. He isn’t symptomatic at present but we’re the type of people who don’t mind staying at home. I wfh, he has nowhere he needs to be. We can get plenty in for 2 weeks of staying home. We have Netflix and board games Grin The risk of him having it, passing it onto me or others, or me passing it on via him may be minuscule. But likewise a couple of weeks of staying home is minuscule in our whole lifetimes. So we’re going to do it to be on the safe side.

Wehttam · 01/03/2020 20:20

Halfamillion 10 days ago they were less than the number we are at? I’m with you on the scared.

screamer1 · 01/03/2020 20:20

@Number12 DH thinks I'm nuts. I'll be the first to admit that I'm more inclined to anxiety than him, but I've never responded in this way to any other outbreak before.

My dad is a consultant dr. He also thinks I'm nuts.

woodchuck99 · 01/03/2020 20:21

I think the number of cases in Italy must be massively underestimated considering the number of infections resulting from people travelling there.

BiBiBirdie · 01/03/2020 20:21

@Number12 yes I have a DP who I have barely spoken to as he decided to tell me I'm clearly" going mad" again (referring to the nervous breakdown I had nearly 12 years ago after our son, which is why I'm panicking, was born at 28 weeks.

iMoan7 · 01/03/2020 20:22

I was casually thinking earlier about the actual hell a two week quarantine would be with my kids (5 and 2). In the house would be bad enough but in a hotel room..?

I’d rather take my chances with Coronavirus in all honesty.

YouAreTheEggManIAmTheWalrus · 01/03/2020 20:22

@VivaLeBeaver I actually remember reading the same now you have mentioned that. I guess treatments have all been trial and error for a while and it’s confusing when different reports conflict each other. I’ll take the word of a report in the Lancet over a YouTube video though!

YoursTunbridgeWells · 01/03/2020 20:22

@Roominmyhouse Snap gig Thursday - capaciry of venue 1800. DD theatre trip capacity 2000.
I personally want Governement to ban all of this stuff - all theatre, cinema, concerts, crufts, trade shows, church gatherings etc etc. Absolutely anything where more than 100 people are expected. This should include private parties, weddings etc. As no point doing haldf measures

georgedawes · 01/03/2020 20:23

Thanks halfamillion, that was me. Wow.

LoveLuna · 01/03/2020 20:25

I live in Haslemere and have been at the Health Centre a couple of times last week with DD (17), routine stuff not illness. The latest fb post by our town councillor states that 3 adults that have been in contact with the man with the confirmed case, have now tested positive - 1 lives in Surrey, 2 in West Sussex (we are right on the border of Surrey / West Sussex / Hampshire so cases could still be local.) She has also confirmed none of them are GPs or HCPs.

DD goes to college in a town 30 minutes away by bus. Whilst I know it's unlikely she has come in to contact with anyone with the CV, I'm concerned about sending her to a large college in another town. I'm hoping college will ask students from Haslemere to stay home, and take the decision out of my hands.
We both are considered to be in the severe risk group due to ongoing health issues.

I popped into Sainsbury in nearby Liphook yesterday - bread and milk stocks were low and there was one lonely pack of toilet rolls left on the shelf. DH said our local Tesco was much the same. There have been people on the fb community board demanding to be told who it is, along with their photo. One of the local pubs has closed for a deep clean as the first patient was a customer there. It all feels very surreal at the moment.

SisterAgatha · 01/03/2020 20:26

I think Italy will have a larger affect on the spread due to the nature of skiing. People will be renting equipment, gloves, boots, helmets etc. Makes the capacity for spread larger.

littlealexhorne · 01/03/2020 20:26

I saw something from a teenager who was self isolating after being in Italy on a school trip, only she sent her mum into her school to pick up work for her. Surely isolating only works effectively if the whole household is going to do it?

NettleTea · 01/03/2020 20:26

I got completely slated on a local Facebook page when I asked why they hadnt isolated the kids who went on the ski trip at a comprehensive 300 yards away from my house, when at the private school that my son now goes to, they have basically blocked anyone who had been to an ever increasing number of countries from coming to the school until they had done 14 days isolation in the UK, and the Chinese students had been held at the school boarding house over half term.
I have forbidden my son from meeting with his friends from the old school (they usually have an XBox meet up at ours weekly) for the forseeable future until its an all clear.

Keynote1 · 01/03/2020 20:27

I am struggling so much with this, literally shaking. My family think I am going to end up having a breakdown and are getting very upset with me, I don't seem to be able to think about anything else.

greasyspooncafe · 01/03/2020 20:28

So quick question for you all

My parents have been in tenerife in a hotel 10 mins from the one that's in lockdown

They went last Monday and came home early yesterday
Mum suggested she pops in to us this week. I've got primary school age kids.
I suggested we wait a week or so before f2f contact given they've been through airports and on planes and no idea who they've been in contact with

I think they were both shocked I even suggested it.

Am I being overly paranoid?

Ciwirocks · 01/03/2020 20:28

woodchuck99 I agree with you which is why I can’t understand our government not advising people to self isolate when they return from north Italy. My relative returned last week and despite telling her boss she was uncomfortable returning to work she has been told she has to on Monday (she works with children as well) her child has been marked as an unauthorised absence from school as she has also kept her off. This is all just being handled so badly with a disgraceful lack of leadership.

WhoWants2Know · 01/03/2020 20:29

I needed to do a fairly big shop today and found the shops to be about average for a weekend day. One shop had all of the cold medicine, disinfectant, toilet roll multi-packs and hand soap in handy displays at the front.

The only low/empty shelves were dried pasta and pesto, which amused me a bit.
