A boy in my son’s class has just returned from a holiday in Thailand over half term- am I right in thinking they should be self isolating for 2 weeks?!

TokyoSushi · 01/03/2020 20:54

Nicola Sturgeon live on Sky News just now, once again, her level of competence & professionalism outweighs Boris Johnson by a million to one!

Not much new, but reassuring that it's being taken seriously nonetheless.

pedanticstyleguide · 01/03/2020 20:55

Also outing location so have also namechanged.

Loveluna as you are in Haslemere you may know the big Sainsburys at Farnham - DH was there today and said he could get everything, he didn't notice any empty shelves at all.

I was at a race today at Alice Holt where there were a significant number of Haslemere & Borders AC runners.

Meruem · 01/03/2020 20:56

@NaiceHamPlease

This is something I mentioned upthread,. When DS gets back from Japan he will need to get the tube. There’s no way around it as I don’t drive, nor do I know anyone who could drive him although would be reluctant to ask if I did! He’s showing no symptoms and hopefully is fine and we will self isolate once he’s here. But yes, before that he will be taking a tube all through London. As I’m sure will many other travellers. This is a big risk factor and I don’t know how we mitigate against that,

Skittlesss · 01/03/2020 20:56

Results from the tests are usually back within 24- 48 hours. However, others have reported waiting for several days / a week

So the 12 people recorded today could actually be 12 people from Friday or even before then and today’s figure is even higher!

WaterSheep · 01/03/2020 20:56

BabyFairy

Nope, apparently no need to isolate unless he is showing symptoms.

other parts of mainland China or South Korea, Hong Kong, Japan, Macau, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan or Thailand in the last 14 days and have a cough, high temperature or shortness of breath (even if your symptoms are mild)

Oakmaiden · 01/03/2020 20:56

Are these new people those who have reported symptoms and been tested TODAY or did they report and get tested before today and it’s just today their test came back?

I found this on a local news website: "A source has said the Swansea man, who was aged in his 50s, contacted NHS Direct Wales on 111 on Sunday, was tested on Tuesday and received the results on Wednesday, confirming he had the virus, official name COVID-1."

Also interested to note that the Wales Public Health Advice is:

"if a confirmed case occurs in an educational setting, the local health protection team will provide advice and will work with the head teacher, principal and the management team of that setting."

A spokeswoman for the organisation said: "Apart from those that are defined as close contacts, the rest of the school does not need to take any precautions or make any changes to their own activities, unless they become unwell, at which point they will be assessed as a suspected case depending on their symptoms.

"This advice applies to teaching staff and children in the rest of the class who are not in a close friendship group or children undertaking small group work.

"The decision as to whether pupils, students and staff fall into this contact group or the closer contact group will be made between the health protection team, the educational setting and (if they are old enough) the student."

To who ever said about frozen food out of stock in tesco.... it is because there is a half price sale

Also, was there not a big stock up on food, during brexit, by mumsnet too?? I think you are being a little extreme.... again.

DonkeyKong2019 · 01/03/2020 20:57

@Babyfairy0923 Thailand is on the only selfisolate if you have symptoms list.

copperstrike76 · 01/03/2020 20:58

@LoveLuna I'm a bit torn between wanting to know who it is, having been at the Health Centre, and not wanting to know.

I can relate to that. I think I'd be the same. Then again, the health centre is quite big isn't it? (Compared to a normal doctor's surgery I mean.) So the chances of you having been in the same space as the person for very long must be quite small.

I can't stop thinking about it and I know that's not healthy. I barely give flu a second thought. This does seem a lot scarier.

Deux · 01/03/2020 21:00

I wonder if anyone could link me to the Lancet paper about the virus causing the immune system go in to overdrive?

I don’t feel too worried right now and I’m reasonably well stocked but my DH has had an excessive immune response before and was seriously ill, ICU, kidney failure, 6 months in hospital. Awful.

So reading about this lancet paper is worrying.

SunburstsOrMarbleHalls · 01/03/2020 21:00

Tried to buy alcohol hand gel sanitiser today and was completely sold out at local supermarkets. Managed to get some online for a reasonable price (£4.99 for 500ml) although it has a delayed delivery of roughly 9 days due to high demand. I will dispense into little travel bottles as DS and I use public transport a lot and DP travels to Europe at least 5 times per month with work.

DD's law firm in London had an email from facilities dept on Friday telling all colleagues to stop appropriating sanitiser supplies from communal areas.

Needtobepositive · 01/03/2020 21:00

I haven’t been too worried up until now but how worried should I be? I have a type 1 diabetic child and an immuno compromised family member. I’ve been unconcerned until now (unusual for me) I remember being worried about the swine flu and that came to nothing so didn’t worry too much about this.

fedup21 · 01/03/2020 21:03

This advice applies to teaching staff and children in the rest of the class who are not in a close friendship group or children undertaking small group work.

I would say that in a KS1 class, regardless of being in a friendship group or undertaking small group work-sitting on the carpet in close proximity, working at several different tables and seating arrangements with different children throughout the day including eating dinner, assembly, clubs, sets etc-that nobody should be considered ‘safe’.

NemophilistRebel · 01/03/2020 21:04

The self isolating only if you have symptoms - does this mean that it’s confirmed that it is only contagious when symptoms are present ?

Wunderweb · 01/03/2020 21:04

Apologies to ask again but why are there no interviews or reports about those, especially in UK, who have had the virus and now considered recovered? A lot of the fear and anxiety seems to be linked to its ‘mystery’ so why haven’t recovered patients talked about their experiences?

SirVixofVixHall · 01/03/2020 21:05

Meruem if your son wears gloves and a mask, then that might help lower spread, if he was incubating the virus.

Temporaryanonymity · 01/03/2020 21:05

Oakmaiden, my son is sure there is only one boy but I was told two boys in the school but obviously I have no idea really, apart from lots of people were aware Thursday night in the Pilot in Mumbles.

I must admit I did keep my son off on Friday in the absence of any clear information but I plan to send him tomorrow.

Oakmaiden · 01/03/2020 21:06

@Wunderweb Maybe they don't want to? There was an article with quotes from the "superspreader" on the Sky site though.

Meruem · 01/03/2020 21:08

@SirVixofVixHall

I will speak to him about that, it’s a good idea. I know he is keen not to put anyone at risk if he can.

LangClegsInSpace · 01/03/2020 21:08

I'm always a few pages behind on these threads but I want to say thank you to all the regular posters who are providing up to date reliable info Flowers

dementedma · 01/03/2020 21:12

whettham no internet or facebook but can get him on wi chat. the campus has been in isolation since he got back in January. He is allowed out between 10 am and 12 noon to buy food. He says the city is like a ghost town but is expecting the students back this week.

Wunderweb · 01/03/2020 21:12

@oakmaiden thanks, article says he showed no symptoms. It might reassure people if we knew what it felt like, done of the phrases used are fairly subjective- e.g ‘ mild symptoms’
It’s adding to my worry because why wouldn’t recovered patients be interviewed or written about?

Llamallamadingdong · 01/03/2020 21:12

Needtobepositive my DD is type 1. She’s generally quite robust but I’m really stressing about what might happen if she were to contract it. I’m worried about unwittingly bringing it home from work.

DH and I had a discussion earlier and due to her being type 1, I will have a lower threshold for keeping her off school if it was spreading wildly and there were a large number of cases. You have my sympathies, we’ve been up through the night many a time dealing with high sugars because of viral illness. It’s an extra level of worry.

saltinesandcoffeecups · 01/03/2020 21:15

@Wunderweb would you want to be named if you had this virus through no fault of your own? Honestly people here are ready to stone those infected and banish them to parts unknown. Just wait until there’s a death or two. Then they will be seen as pulling the trigger on grandma.
