Don't go Book, don't be upset BiBi, don't be so hard on BiBi, peridoto, and thanks for calming down your posts Wehttam. We're all worried which is when tempers flare but I think everyone's viewpoints and knowledge is helpful so let's all try to stick around, contribute meaningfully and be kind to each other!

Themythsweliveby · 01/03/2020 09:36

Bookmeonthesudexpress - please stay! Sharing what other countries are doing is vital! Some people on here are just unfriendly- ignore.

Wehttam · 01/03/2020 09:38

Peridito the keep calm campaign lulls many into a false sense of it won’t be that bad. More balance is needed because right now it’s tipping the wrong way.

Trying to explain this to those who only believe the mainstream news without any form of critical thinking is impossible, family members still wandering around without a care in the world actually laughing at people wearing masks.

These people are actually dangerous because they rebel against the narrative of prepare and be ready. I’ll be alright jack.

Thank you. That post really upset me. I am a zero hours English teacher, when I work I earn well, when I don't, like now the schools are closed for deep cleaning, I'm stuck.
I also work in a UK language school in the summer and our main clients are ta-da Italian and Chinese so the situation is concerning. To then find "the problem with these threads is the people who have just joined" is hurtful.

meredithgrey1 · 01/03/2020 09:40

The plan to rope retired doctors in is outrageous.

But if you need more medical staff, what else can you do? You can make people work full time, and cancel holiday, but other than that, you need to get them from somewhere.

I think the government would have more sympathy for this policy if it looked like they were doing more to avoid a situation where it becomes necessary. I mean, not cancelling big events just seems thick. At least if they had some other ideas they could say "look we've tried everything and it hasn't worked so we do need some retired doctors to help if they can". Rather than "nah we won't cancel anything or do anything substantial, but it's ok because retired doctors will help out".

Sparklynails7 · 01/03/2020 09:41

@KenAdams just teach your children to wash their hands properly and not to sneeze/cough in their hands (crook of elbow if they don't have a tissue). The flu kills people too so I wouldn't worry too much about this Corona Virus.

ChardonnaysDistantCousin · 01/03/2020 09:41

New regulations were also introduced this week to prohibit the sale and consumption of wild animals.

This week? Not exactly on the ball is it?

It should have happened after the SARS epidemic.

SistemaAddict · 01/03/2020 09:41

Please can I have some idea what you would do in my position? Dc is going on a school residential next week. It's to a large centre with lots of other schools and families. She has asthma but is rarely bothered by it unless ill with something else. The HT is one to leave closing school to the last minute if it snows or is icy. It's on a huge hill and several cars slid from the top to the bottom a few years back in the ice and snow at school drop off time. Thankfully no children were hurt but they still didn't close school. There's usually several inches of snow before they close school by which time it's dangerous for parents to go and collect due to all the hills around here. I have no faith that the HT would take action over covid 19. I have asthma that's not very well controlled and dd has asthma too so if it's brought back to us then we would be more likely to be very ill. If the centre had to be quarantined it would be horrendous. I'm trying to be logical but can't help be worried. WWYD?

Head desk, head desk, head desk.

BambooBoobam · 01/03/2020 09:42

Please stay Book.

Wehttam · 01/03/2020 09:43

Book please stay, we need eyes outside the UK. I imagine many people are worried about the economic effect on the tourism there. Please keep us in the loop.

User1775564212 · 01/03/2020 09:43

@Bercows I’d like to know the answer too. Does asthma mean you’ve more chance of getting very ill?

KenAdams · 01/03/2020 09:45

@Bercows - thanks. My kidney function is fine luckily (just been tested) so at least that's something.

BookMeOnTheSudExpress you can always ignore one poster. One poster doesn’t speak for the entire thread. Have you not been on MN long?

Twixes · 01/03/2020 09:45

@HasaDigaEebowai I completely agree. I think this is potentially going to turn into a 'war effort'. Requesting retired medics to volunteer speaks volumes about the seriousness of the situation.

peridito · 01/03/2020 09:47

Requesting retired medics to volunteer speaks volumes about the seriousness of the situation yes ,that's my thinking .

Wehttam · 01/03/2020 09:47

Chardonnay don’t get worked up over the wild animals bans. They will make a law and no one will adhere to it. Animals are very divisive and easily distract people’s attention. Worrying about wild animals in China is like worrying about the rain, pointless.

SistemaAddict · 01/03/2020 09:48

@User1775564212 yes. I was very ill with flu as a child abs had swine flu in 2009 and my asthma was badly affected.
There's chicken pox doing the rounds at our school too. My youngest hasn't had it yet but the older two have so at least chicken pox won't affect the trip.

StartupRepair · 01/03/2020 09:50

Perspective from Australia. We have 25 cases, one person has died and supermarkets are starting to have empty shelves. No discussion yet about closing schools or workplaces.

Wehttam · 01/03/2020 09:50

Bercows if there is asthma I wouldn’t risk it.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 01/03/2020 09:51

I was out shopping yesterday in a busy local high street environment (usually annoyingly so on a Saturday). Some of the shops (Poundland and TKMaxx) were virtually deserted - most unusual. I was thinking that people are doing their essentials shopping and then going home rather than 'window shopping'/browsing.

It was so marked that we actually checked our phones to make sure we hadn't missed some public service announcement.

Wehttam · 01/03/2020 09:52

Startup thank you, are the cases in one region or spread around the country? Also please for those who think the warm weather will stop this, what is the temperature at the moment.

Jenasaurus · 01/03/2020 09:52

Thanks for the new thread
