At the end of the last tread someone compared this to being in a netflix documentary. Coincidentally, has anyone watched pandemic on netflix? It came out in January, and it's a documentary about how well the US and Asia are equipped to deal with an influenza pandemic. Very interesting but it's a shame they've been planning for flu and instead we've got coronovirus.
Also for those saying friends and family are claiming it's just flu, you could always say that yes the symptoms are the same as flu but the virus is more closely related to Aids and Ebola, that might get them to stop and think. We accept flu as a normal part of life, that everyone will have at least once. The idea of catching AIDS is a lot more terrifying

TakeANote · 01/03/2020 09:15

Gov have to treat people at home because it’s winter and all beds are running around 95% capacity already.

They can put up temporary wards in sports halls etc but no where near enough for the numbers predicted.

That 17% quote was VERY odd wasn’t it?! Hopefully it was a typo... or that person’s maths are AWFUL and we are doomed.

IrenetheQuaint · 01/03/2020 09:15

'I don't know whether to laugh or cry at this quote from the 'boss of an NHS Trust' (according to The Guardian)

“About 17% of people who contract the virus need some sort of medical intervention. So if this properly catches hold you have a 17% increase in the number of people coming through the NHS’s door, and then everything falls over.”'

LOL yes - the most innumerate quote I have seen in the media for some time (and that's saying something)

Bool · 01/03/2020 09:15

@ShanghaiDiva China may be managing it well now but let’s not put the rose tinted glasses on. According to this epidemiological study of it’s evolution (sorry article is in Italian) the virus started there end Oct / beg Nov so there was a big national coverup which did not help how much it spread at first.

ShanghaiDiva · 01/03/2020 09:17

@Themythsweliveby
The Chinese are not treating people at home. It is mandatory to go to a fever clinic/hospital if you have any symptoms and there may be legal consequences if you do not comply.
Those that are at home are in quarantine, not because they are ill but because they have travelled within China or have come from an affected area such as Italy, Iran or South Korea.

EnidBlyton · 01/03/2020 09:18

I would like to see the figures for flu, to get some sort of perspective.
Every day we are given coronavirus figures but we need some kind of yardstick

peridito · 01/03/2020 09:18

@BiBiBirdie I've reported your post on the last thread for the vile comment re Carrie Symonds .

There's no need for it .

remember the 'be kind campaign'

catsandlavender · 01/03/2020 09:19

Morning everyone.

Are we thinking schools will shut across the country? A child in my class has been on holiday in Italy. Not sure where but it will be interesting to see whether he is in tomorrow or not. Bless him, I very much hope he is ok.

Themythsweliveby · 01/03/2020 09:19

The NHS definitely can’t cope - there aren’t enough beds for 20 pc of 60 pc of the population (worst case scenario) so let’s plan for all the second best options as well as we can now. Hopefully being a centralised system the NHS do know how many ventilators etc they do have and can find out how many private hospitals have. China could mobilise Wuhan because the rest of China including medical staff helped enormously. We don’t have that option. We need to calm our population, educate them and prepare.

I think it's still a few weeks away from the 'hockey stick' massive upturn in cases, but it's most likely coming. So nothing to do but get into good habits and stock up on a bit extra each week in case of disruption.

I noticed on the tube on Friday that suddenly people had started trying not to hold onto bars with bare hands - and good, shows people are taking it seriously.

My mum is immunocompromised, so is the only family member we have to worry about. Also we bought my parents a weekend in Rome at the end of this month as their joint 70th bday present and I fear that's not going to happen. I know Rome's not a trouble spot yet, but even if they do get there everything they want to see might be shut.

WaterSheep · 01/03/2020 09:21

Indeed. I expect the number of cases will begin to rise by the end of next week. Even more so, given the almost no existent response by the government.

@Bool
I am not putting on any rose tinted glasses. I have lived in China for 12 years and am well aware of what the govt is capable of. However, this does not negate the fact they have taken extraordinary measures to address the situation (with huge economic consequences) and I don’t think any other country could have done this. New regulations were also introduced this week to prohibit the sale and consumption of wild animals.

FourTeaFallOut · 01/03/2020 09:24

The CFR for seasonal flu differs depending on the strain and whether the current vaccine was a good fit. I've seen people quote numbers as little as .02 and as high as 0.1.

DominicCummingsForehead · 01/03/2020 09:25

From 7:42 he talks about the fact that the UK has only 15 beds for the most critical respiratory cases, and that you would therefore expect our Government to have implemented severe containment measures from the off.

But they haven't.

BiBiBirdie · 01/03/2020 09:25

Thank you @ofwarren. He has multiple lung conditions.

EnidBlyton · 01/03/2020 09:25

closign schools would be madness, their parents could not go to work, who would offer childcare?
the parents may work in hospitals.

peridito · 01/03/2020 09:26

my twopennyworth

I've been surprised by the lack of awareness in those around me about the spread of Corona . The keep calm campaign is all well and good but I think a bit more balance is needed .

I don't doubt that there must be many cases in England .I'm in London and the crowding on commuter transport is horrendous .The jubilee line ,with stops at Canary Wharf is a case in point .

Oil giant Chevron has asked 300 staff not to come into its office in Canary Wharf "for the time being".

Crossrail, which shares the same building as Chevron, and media firm OMD, based in central London, have also asked staff to stay away.

Ciwirocks · 01/03/2020 09:26

Someone mentioned PPE earlier. I am not front line staff but could be called upon to change roles and help out which is fine. However if there is not appropriate PPE available and I am not properly trained I will refuse. I have to protect my own family and children and myself as I have an underlying health condition as well.

lljkk · 01/03/2020 09:26

The latest WHO situation report for new cases outside China looks like a hockey stick to me.

peridito · 01/03/2020 09:30

and as I've said on Chat I was mighty surprised that my early retired nurse partner got a call from a nursing agency after 12 years with no contact .

he thought nothing of it except to laugh and say well I'm no longer registerd .

and then I read on here that Sky were reporting emergency registration plans to bring back retired staff .

not saying I don't think the plan has merit ,just that it brought it home to me .

IrenetheQuaint · 01/03/2020 09:30

Is there any research behind the decisions of Switzerland, France etc to ban events with more than 1000 expected attendees? I'm not sure that a big sports event would necessarily be more dangerous in terms of virus spread than thousands of people getting the Central/Jubilee line into work every day?

BookMeOnTheSudExpress · 01/03/2020 09:31

Just catching up from last night but as one of the first posts I read towards the end of the last thread is complaining about those of us who have recently joined the threads (this is my third) I'll be off.

Shame, as a) I thought my contributions of what I can see and am experiencing here on the ground in Italy might be, at worst interesting for you and at best, informative b) MN owns the site and posters don't get to pick and choose where others post or say they aren't welcome because they've only just joined.

They have erected triage tents outside the 3 nearest local hospitals to me. (Puglia)
