I thought the WHO said early on that they wouldn't formally declare the outbreak to be a "pandemic"?

persin · 01/03/2020 19:51

@user yes

Oakmaiden · 01/03/2020 19:54

Regarding the whole "pandemic" label - I found this interesting.

ofwarren · 01/03/2020 19:55

A Tayside resident who recently travelled from Italy has become the first person in Scotland to be diagnosed with coronavirus, the Scottish Government has said. It brings the UK total to 36.

Oakmaiden · 01/03/2020 19:55

Sorry - link is a New Scientist article.

Srictlybakeoff · 01/03/2020 19:55

Where did you see that tiny

misselphaba · 01/03/2020 19:56

The local newspapers in Hertfordshire are reporting three cases in the county.

One diagnosed yesterday and two today.

Reasoning behind not declaring a pandemic at the moment is explained here: www.newscientist.com/article/2235342-covid-19-why-wont-the-who-officially-declare-a-coronavirus-pandemic/

But I think the answer is basically WHO have been burned by declaring pandemics before, and so they're reluctant to do it again. They also don't seem to have a clear criteria for declaring a pandemic before.

WitchDoc · 01/03/2020 19:58

@Oakmaiden

The final paragraph is very telling

FoxRedBitch · 01/03/2020 20:01

Does the whole household self isolate? So if one parents travels abroad and then returns, is it just that adult or the whole family?

Sky news have more detailed info.

VivaLeBeaver · 01/03/2020 20:02

@YouAreTheEggManIAmTheWalrus. The lancet paper said lowering the immune system once corvid has been caught is actually good. That the virus triggers the immune system into over drive and it’s actually the heightened response of the immune system which is killing people.

Now obviously they are writing papers as they go and their thoughts/treatment protocols may well develop/change. These aren’t exactly gold standard RCTs.

Oakmaiden · 01/03/2020 20:02

Yah. I mean, with these sort of numbers it is clearly here to stay.

I find it interesting that the only UK cases that count (I think) are the ones today that were probably infected by a family member who had not travelled abroad.

TheGlaikitRambler · 01/03/2020 20:02

First case announced in my city :(

Oakmaiden · 01/03/2020 20:04

Does the whole household self isolate? So if one parents travels abroad and then returns, is it just that adult or the whole family?

Well, rumour has it that at least one person who has now been confirmed as a positive case was told that it was fine to send his children to school while waiting for his results.... So [shrug]

WaterSheep · 01/03/2020 20:07

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has chaired a meeting of the Scottish Government Resilience Committee this evening

She seems to be doing a damn sight more than Boris. Case confirmed and a meeting on the same day, and it's a Sunday.

GorkyMcPorky · 01/03/2020 20:08

Over the coming weeks, I think we can expect to see the deathrate in European countries coming down. However, it's very likely to still be higher than China's as we have an older population

and if course we can't / won't lockdown so reinfection will be a bigger problem.

@Quartz2208, a few threads back a poster who went on to flounce flamed me for suggesting that one reason for the 'it's just the flu' mentality is a lack of understanding of the flu. Many people who dismiss it by comparing it to the flu are probably thinking of a heavy cold.

@VivaLeBeaver can you link to this paper, it sounds intriguing?

Abraid2 · 01/03/2020 20:10

One case. A tiny population. So perhaps not as complex as being pm of the UK?

I didn’t vote for BJ, btw.

Oakmaiden · 01/03/2020 20:11

One case. A tiny population. So perhaps not as complex as being pm of the UK?

That is surely an argument for BJ having acted sooner? The fact the issue is more complex?

Roominmyhouse · 01/03/2020 20:13

@ofwarren it’s only the MotoGP premier class that’s not happening due to restrictions Qatar have put in place around people who’ve been to Italy. Moto2 and 3 are still going ahead as those teams are already there.

We are due to go to a gig Friday and our friend thinks “large” gatherings will have been prohibited by then. I’m not so sure?

Wehttam · 01/03/2020 20:14

Hope everyone has chance to read that New Scientist article Oakmaiden posted.
