@Whatthecrepe that's fab but this isn't flu.

GorkyMcPorky · 01/03/2020 19:39

@Whatthecrepe it's not flu.

FourTeaFallOut · 01/03/2020 19:39

I think they have factored in the number of subclinical patients assumed in to the CFR of 2% or .9% depending on whose figures you are working from.

YoursTunbridgeWells · 01/03/2020 19:39

@User1775564212 I would keep an eye on the news. Make sure all preventers and need are taken as should be. 2 of mine have mild asthma and I was moderate but probably on the milder side now.

SansaSnark · 01/03/2020 19:40

@Oakmaiden 3.4%, however initially the death rate was high as people didn't know what they were dealing with/how to treat it. As the Chinese have gained an understanding of the disease, and testing has become more widespread, deathrate estimates have come down.

@Ciwirocks Again, I think the death rate is higher at the start of the outbreak as doctors are treating a new disease, and there is confusion about seeking treatment etc. Over the coming weeks, I think we can expect to see the deathrate in European countries coming down. However, it's very likely to still be higher than China's as we have an older population. It's also to do with how many people are being tested. It's very likely there are more cases in France and Italy than are being caught by testing.

@VivaLeBeaver it did seem like a strange thing to state, I’ve been asthmatic 41 years and a regular user of corticosteroids so am well versed in the relief they can give. Perhaps Dr Campbell meant Iran hospitals were only using those and nothing else? It was something to do with steroids lowering the activity of the immune system and things going downhill as a result.

Skittlesss · 01/03/2020 19:40

How are we supposed to know whether our cold is a cold or coronavirus?

FourTeaFallOut · 01/03/2020 19:41

France is less than 2% of the 130 patients so far, it takes weeks for it to kill you off, I wouldn't pin your hopes there.

Meruem · 01/03/2020 19:42

How can we debunk this “it’s just flu” myth? That seems to be the biggest barrier to getting people to take this seriously. Has it been too down played up to this point? I take on board that we don’t want widespread panic but there’s a severe lack of understanding right now.

SansaSnark · 01/03/2020 19:42

Actually Italy's current death rate is exactly 2% as well- so not unexpectedly high.

ginandnappies · 01/03/2020 19:43

Scottish case only a matter of time.

SansaSnark · 01/03/2020 19:44

The guardian did a great article on coronvirus myths here: www.theguardian.com/world/2020/mar/01/yes-it-is-worse-than-the-flu-busting-the-coronavirus-myths

Well worth sharing widely, I think.

Ciwirocks · 01/03/2020 19:45

I also don’t understand why South Korea have 10 critical and Italy have 140? Are they using the same classification of critical? The French seem to have a lot hospitalised as well. I know we can’t cope with that here, our local hospital has 2 beds set aside for Coronavirus patients!

WitchDoc · 01/03/2020 19:45

@tud41

Phase 5- Spread of disease between humans is occurring in more than one country of one WHO region.
Phase 6- Community level outbreaks are in at least one additional country in a different WHO region from phase 5. A global pandemic is under way.

What am I missing?

MargotB7 · 01/03/2020 19:45

Meruem

My friend who works for the NHS is playing it down, also my DH thinks I'm overreacting. I am a worrier and do become a bit obsessed about things.

NEW: MotoGP says the Grand Prix of Qatar has been canceled due to coronavirus

Quartz2208 · 01/03/2020 19:46

Part of this shows that people dont even take actual flu seriously though either which the start of the problem. We see flu as being a cold rather than the potential killer that is as well.

So how can people take this seriously (worse than flu) if flu itself isnt

NemophilistRebel · 01/03/2020 19:46

The two confirmed cases in Hertfordshire have not been driven a more specific location

Googling I can only find links to Watford so assume both are there but why not confirm it?
Hertfordshire is massive and every other confirmed case has been made public

FourTeaFallOut · 01/03/2020 19:47

Because people underestimate it because most people get a cough and that seems familiar and forgettable. If the rates of illness and death stayed the same but 80% got a mild case of bleeding out of the eyeballs, they'd respect the figures more.

FlamingoAndJohn · 01/03/2020 19:48

The thing with saying that one case is in Essex is that some bits of Essex are practically London and some bits are tiny little villages.

georgedawes · 01/03/2020 19:49

Can anyone say when Italy was at roughly 35 cases? Trying to think when we'll be where Italy is now.

tinytemper66 · 01/03/2020 19:49

1st case confirmed in Scotland.

DonkeyKong2019 · 01/03/2020 19:50

My 3 year old had flu at Christmas. I had zero knowledge of actual flu until then.

BunsyGirl · 01/03/2020 19:50

@FlamingoAndJohn

According to a newspaper report the person presented themselves to A & E at the Princess Alexandra, Harlow.

MabelMoo23 · 01/03/2020 19:51

This is the thing, that’s all I keep hearing. No one cares this much about flu and flu kills more people 🙄

Or “it’s just a cold, people are overreacting”
