Is anyone keeping there DC off school tomorrow?

no. unless the school is closed and/or my dc are ill they will attend school.

VivaLeBeaver · 01/03/2020 19:13

I was eavesdropping to a conversation in a cafe earlier, it was a GP and his friend.

Gp said (and I quote) “coronavirus, everyone is going to get it. Absolutely everyone, it’s too late to stop it. The govt are talking bollocks about being in control and having a plan....there’s nothing. Shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted. There is no plan. There’s nothing we can do, the nhs Can’t Cope with this. What do they expect me to do.....sign travel insurance forms so people can cancel holidays. Anyway it’s only about a 1% chance of being ill with it, so if you catch it it’ll probably only be a sniffle”

All said at full volume, aware other people could hear.

Guess he’s not right that everyone is going to get it but he certainly has no faith in ability of nhs to cope. And seems misinformed about it likely to “be a sniffle”.

MarshaBradyo · 01/03/2020 19:14

No I’m not keeping my dc off school.

VivaLeBeaver · 01/03/2020 19:15

. Campbell attested the higher death rate in Iran partly to not having the drugs to treat and also treating all pneumonia with corticosteroids which he said was inappropriate and can make things worse*

Interesting, I read a Lancet paper yesterday written by a Whuhan medic who said steroids were helping as reduced lung inflammation?

ofwarren · 01/03/2020 19:15

Yes user, I withdrew my immune suppressed son on Thursday

usernameishistory · 01/03/2020 19:15

Asthma sufferers - steroids - covid19 pneumonia

Incompatible?

awesomeaircraft · 01/03/2020 19:16

@User1775564212 No, no known case close by / my DC are without health conditions. At this stage, I intend to keep things as normal until told to do otherwise. Prepping (food/paracetamol) for 2 weeks is done (I think).

tud41 · 01/03/2020 19:17

@WitchDoc wow that makes sense, the one organisation who's sole job is to deal with these sorts of things but yea lets not listen to a word they say!

It seems you wont trust anyone or any figures unless they are ones that give the worst case scenario.

Yes it is worrying and yes it is in many countries but pandemics describe world wide human to human infections. Yes there have been some especially in China but only a third of the countries in the world have cases right now so it does not quite fit the description of pandemic

LarkDescending · 01/03/2020 19:18

No worries usernameishistory.

GP relative is usually rather laid back but was sounding really quite pessimistic. We have several over-75s in the family to worry about, all of them with existing health concerns of one sort or another.

SansaSnark · 01/03/2020 19:19

Just as a note, someone said no children have died from coronavirus, but that's not the case. No children in the 0-9 age bracket have died, but children in the 10-19 age bracket have the same deathrate as all people under 30 (0.2%) source here: www.businessinsider.com/coronavirus-death-age-older-people-higher-risk-2020-2?r=US&IR=T

The director general of France’s health service, Jérôme Salomon, has given the latest figures and there’s another leap on Sunday. The number of confirmed cases has risen to 130, from 100. Of that, 116 people are in hospital – nine of them in a serious condition – and 12 people recovered. There have been two deaths

New cases include two children, a one-year-old and a five-year-old, who have been hospitalised in Strasbourg in eastern France along with their 27-year-old mother who also tested positive. Their condition has been described as not worrying.

Salomon says French travellers should avoid journeys abroad outside the European Union “unless strictly necessary”. Nevertheless, he pointed out the death rate worldwide is 3.4% of confirmed cases.

The Manga and Sci-Fi Show salon planned for next week in Paris, which was to have featured giant karaoke and K Pop concerts, has been cancelled.*

Wehttam · 01/03/2020 19:23

Evening all. Not sure anyone has posted this yet but Sky News are saying you will be able to hold funerals in your home. Just when I thought I had prepped enough I need to find caskets. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Wehttam · 01/03/2020 19:24

How about avoiding their next door neighbour Italy!?

ChipotleBlessing · 01/03/2020 19:30

Wow, one of the Dutch cases is from the village next to a big Center Parcs.

YoursTunbridgeWells · 01/03/2020 19:31

@User1775564212 that piece of the Who report mentions respiratory conditions, there is a vast difference between an oxygen dependent person with severe COPD and a mild asthmatic.

User1775564212 · 01/03/2020 19:31

My DC have bad asthma so I’m really in two minds whether to keep them off school, knowing it’s probably going to be getting a lot worse next week Confused

MargotB7 · 01/03/2020 19:31

Wethham

Pardon?

Ciwirocks · 01/03/2020 19:32

The death rate seems a lot higher in France and Italy why is that? This is really worrying me now, I dread to think what will happen in then next week when all of those people who were in Italy for the half term reach the end of the 2 week incubation period. We need to change the guidance to everyone from North Italy self isolating for 2 weeks however I think that’s probably too late now. The government should have advised that last week and I think they know it as well.

Oakmaiden · 01/03/2020 19:32

More than 86,992 confirmed and suspected cases globally, according to Johns Hopkins University, which is tracking the outbreak. The university says there have been almost 3,000 deaths.Sky news

Hmmm. That's quite a bit more than 1-2%... unless my maths has deserted me...

woodencoffeetable · 01/03/2020 19:34

joanneg36 · 01/03/2020 19:35

Only two people have died in France?

Whatthecrepe · 01/03/2020 19:36

Personally I'm not overly worried, I've had flu before and again recently when pregnant and it was awful but I am perfectly fine. I would however be worried for my eldest who has asthma so yeah keeping an eye on the news 👀just in case it comes near our area and schools etc!

ofwarren · 01/03/2020 19:37

Scotland reports first case of coronavirus t.co/eUoE2b20hL

Quartz2208 · 01/03/2020 19:38

France is 2 out of 130 at the moment so under 2%

I think the feeling is outside of China at least there are a lot of people who have it who are not known
