Not sure if it has been mentioned but their is a positive case in Bury, Greater Manchester

WaterSheep · 01/03/2020 18:29

The Trump administration have accused the public of overreacting to the impact of the coronavirus on the economy, and insisted that stocks would bounce back.

Hmm
NatyoCheese · 01/03/2020 18:30

People on UC being coerced into attending Job Centre appointments whether ill or not arent doing it for leisure purposes.

Yes and like most of the working population, who don’t get sick pay, we’re stuck in a really shitty situation.

I live paycheck to paycheck at the moment, if schools closed and I had to pay extra childcare or if I had to take sick leave, I’d probably be homeless within a month or two. I have no safety net anymore and no family around.

The government need to look at the financial implications this will have and plan for how they’re going to help working people who can’t afford to self Isolate otherwise plenty of people are going to continue going to work careless of if they think they could have the virus.

usernameishistory · 01/03/2020 18:30

China notoriously underreported. Despite their breadth of action to stop spread and build capacity to deal with it, it was underreported and theybwere overwhelmed.

They also didnt report on the same basis. Stats increased when the reporting basis changed, as reported on here (previous thread)

NotJustACigar · 01/03/2020 18:31

Screamer01 you asked if it is like the plague, no it isn't, the plague killed 30-60% of the population of Europe. The worst case scenario for this coronavirus is far, far less than that - the reasonable worst case planning assumptions look at 60% of the population getting affected and of those it being fatal in around 2% or fewer. If your children don't have underlying health conditions the risk to them is very, very small as this virus doesn't seem to be affecting children seriously.

I'm concerned about elderly family members, about vulnerable people in the population in general, about the supply chain and about the economy. I'm also concerned about DH who has asthma and is over 50. But I'm not concerned about children or about myself or about healthy people under 50. You sound really worried so I wanted to try to put things in perspective. It's bad but it's not plague bad!

World's first lung transplant for #COVID19 patient in China t.co/vSTV0iBlAU

usernameishistory · 01/03/2020 18:35

NatyoCheese. Agreed, thats a huge worry for very many

The govt has cut back and cut back to beyond thread bare in terms of protecting its vulnerable population, that it doesnt inspire faith in emergency payments and measures to manage this well does it?

WaterSheep · 01/03/2020 18:36

The Shadow Chancellor, John McDonnell, said there needed to be “more direction from the Prime Minister” and accused him of being slow to organise COBRA meetings - the government’s emergency response committee.

He said that the NHS were “really doing their best” and said that clinicians would “always rise to the challenge”. However, he alleged that 80% of the beds needed for coronavirus are already taken up, saying that years of austerity meant resources to tackle the spread of the virus would be stretched.

usernameishistory · 01/03/2020 18:36

60% seems a baseless number because of weak scientific rigour

ofwarren · 01/03/2020 18:38

An update following PM @BorisJohnson's visit to Public Health England @PHE_uk to meet those working on coronavirus. t.co/IfRx2CzwX9

Quartz2208 · 01/03/2020 18:39

www.ghsindex.org/

THe GLobal Health Security Index though has us 2nd in the list of most prepared though so clearly we arent that bad

SansaSnark · 01/03/2020 18:39

The decision to do a lung transplant for a coronavirus patient seems very odd to me. I'd be really interested to hear the justification/thought processes behind that, although I doubt we ever will.

In other news, John McDonnell suggests that 80% of NHS beds needed for Coronavirus patients are already in use- which is probably true.

usernameishistory · 01/03/2020 18:39

Insufficient stocks of PPE, masks, beds, specialists, and on it goes.

When will BJ actually speak about, and commit to addressing real issues instead of thinking the public give a fuck about his procreation of more children to mothers he leaves behind

WaterSheep · 01/03/2020 18:41

ofwarren That update was rather random.

Coronavirus: School in Republic of Ireland closed for 14 days t.co/y838kbXxie

SansaSnark · 01/03/2020 18:41

Meanwhile, Boris Johnson still telling us all to wash our hands. It's not bad advice per se, but that alone is not going to halt the spread!

DonkeyKong2019 · 01/03/2020 18:41

France has 30 new cases taking them to 130..France have definitely tipped

tud41 · 01/03/2020 18:42

@usernameishistory, do you have any proof of this? The WHO have been into China for a while now and at no point have they described China as underplaying it!

HeIenaDove · 01/03/2020 18:45

Essex is fucking huge They need to say where in Essex.

usernameishistory · 01/03/2020 18:46

Im talking about distortion of stats out of China for a long time, and the fact that not all people are tested. Clearly not a rigorous basis for projection. We dont know how many have it, based on that, or how fast its spreading.

PicsInRed · 01/03/2020 18:46

Wash hands for coronavirus prevention.

Open bathroom door with hand. Turn on tap with hand. Depress soap dispenser with hand. Wash hands, accidentally brushing past sink and tap and splashing back water as you wash. Turn off tap with hand. Dry hands under high powered air dryer, taking splashes to face and breathing in droplets. Exit bathroom by opening door with hand.

Touch face. Eat lunch.

Excellent.

georgedawes · 01/03/2020 18:47

Washing your hands seems good advice, but is that it? Do they honestly think that'll stop the spread? It's woeful and is lulling a lot of people in to thinking this won't get worse. Italy is showing us what is likely going to happen here in the next 2-4 weeks.

usernameishistory · 01/03/2020 18:49

So true pics

What I saw was to not touch anything with hands, but use elbows, tissues, etc.

Many home taps are twist ones still, that can only be used by turning with your hands! Has to be deep cleaning too or its meaningless isnt it.

No mention of deep cleaning though.

NebbiaZanzare · 01/03/2020 18:54

Hairy

Can't see any confirmed cases so far. Schools to reopen soon, after a deep clean is completed.

The situation is evolving though. So keep an eye on the Southern end of that map I linked to. The graphic will update at some point tonight. The time/date stamp is right under the map so you'll know what data you're looking at. The only red dot in the heel from yesterday's data is Puglia, so if it starts to look like the map has got a rash down there worth having a click to see if any positives have turned up nearby.

Jrobhatch29 · 01/03/2020 18:54

Do you think its still not really affecting children too badly? As in if they were ending up seriously ill would it make the news? X
