I think with Italy a few things are going on - I remember saying awhile back that Italy has a high ageing population (22%) to China (9%) which could initially make the figures look terrible if they got it. Also if you look at China there was a peak where deaths and recovered were close (if you look at the stats it was 60/40 at the beginning with China)

Also given the spread the Italian figures I suspect are way under as well - these are the ones that have been seen given the spread and the lack of testing (if they follow us) I imagine its far more widespread so its 50% of the very noticeable cases

screamer1 · 01/03/2020 17:57

Can I just get a bit of perspective? I'm starting to panic now. Is this a plague like situation. The Italy stats are terrifying.

I want to keep my kids off school but realise that's unrealistic.

SansaSnark · 01/03/2020 17:58

I didn't realise Bergamo had an airport- that definitely makes it a cause for concern. I hope we are tracing where the Italy cases in the UK flew in from and new travel advice will be issued based on that. If we don't see new advice about traveling to and from Italy tomorrow, I'll be very skeptical of the goverment's response.

@Sassenach85 In theory, they could stop all incoming flights to the UK. They won't do that on Monday, but they'd have the power to.

@DonkeyKong2019 - Coronavirus France map - each newspaper tends to do their own, I have not found any one online except the wiki one, but not sure of the sources.

EgonSpengler2020 · 01/03/2020 18:01

When all these people who are continuing with holidays regardless either get quaurentined abroad or are required to take a further 2 weeks off work to self isolate in return to the UK, how do they expect their employer to react, because they know it's a significant risk before they go. I can imagine a lot of bosses taking a fairly dim view.

NeurotrashWarrior · 01/03/2020 18:01

Just had an argument with dh; if schools closed to prevent spread would heads ask well staff to go in and do admin etc?

I probably couldn't as would have my own kids to look after.

But this has been protocol on snow days; staff must make every effort to get in unless there's a top decision to completely close. (Head i think.) so closed to children but not to staff?

*A school in Dublin is set to close for two weeks after a student tested positive for coronavirus, according to the Irish Times.

The teenager is the first person in the Republic of Ireland to test positive for the virus. The individual became ill in recent days after returning from Italy and is currently in isolation in a Dublin hospital.*

Sassenach85 · 01/03/2020 18:01

Could decisions be made tomorrow regarding schools in Scotland? Sorry I know I am being dense I just have no knowledge of this stuff Blush

Newjez · 01/03/2020 18:02

Won't peaked depend on their actions to mitigate? Surely as they try and go back to work, this could result in a resurgence in a week or twos time?

HairyFloppins · 01/03/2020 18:03

They are going to have to stop travel from Italy now aren't they? it's just getting silly now.

Does anyone know if Foggia is very affected?

Jrobhatch29 · 01/03/2020 18:03

I also find the italy figures terrifying. Why are 50% hospitalised? Are only 50% of the cases mild enough to stay at home

DonkeyKong2019 · 01/03/2020 18:04

@HairyFloppins they may decide it's past that point

NettleTea · 01/03/2020 18:05

Boris Johnson's Great Plan to BEAT THE VIRUS

what a fucking joke.

mrshoho · 01/03/2020 18:05

The strange thing is the UK got its first cases on 31st January as well. Two Chinese nationals in York. Why has our numbers remained relatively low in comparison to Italy? Also Italy are head long into quarantine mode but cases are rising so quickly still.

ofwarren · 01/03/2020 18:06

Education and health are devolved aren't they Sassenach I would expect it would need to come from the Scottish parliament.
Maybe the decisions at COBRA meetings take away that right though? I have no idea to be honest.

usernameishistory · 01/03/2020 18:07

They won't do that on Monday, but they'd have the power to.

Thats a definite then is it Sansa have you decided they won't because you said so? Or are you an advisor thats has told them they won't.

Thanks for the inside track Wink. Don't want to out you.

oneteen · 01/03/2020 18:07

Looking at the stats it appears that people from Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, and Thailand seem to have higher recovery rates to cases....not sure why this would be?

FourTeaFallOut · 01/03/2020 18:07

I do think people who go on holiday now can be considered to have made an informed decision to take the risk that they might find themselves under quarantine in a foreign country trying to access medical care in, at best, their second language and I hope they don't whinge about it if that happens and expect someone else to fix it for them.

georgedawes · 01/03/2020 18:08

The Italy numbers are scary. I'm not a panicking type, but having read a lot, I don't see how those numbers won't be here very shortly.

I'm scared if I'm honest. I don't see how the NHS can cope with those sort of numbers.

joanneg36 · 01/03/2020 18:08

I may be wrong, but pretty sure a large part of the Italy outbreak started in a hospital, which would explain a number of things, including why it has spread so quickly, and why so many people are in hospital.

Janemarpling · 01/03/2020 18:08

A colleague just sent me this said I am over reacting.Hmm

ChipotleBlessing · 01/03/2020 18:10

@EgonSpengler2020 you’d have to be a pretty shit boss to blame your employees for listening to government advice. The current advice is to avoid all but essential travel to a few specific areas and every other travel destination is fine. If people follow the government advice there should be no come back on them.

SansaSnark · 01/03/2020 18:10

@usernameishistory is there any need to be that snide?

I'm clearly not saying what they should/shouldn't do- I'm more saying they aren't taking things that seriously still.

NebbiaZanzare · 01/03/2020 18:10

About the map I posted for Italy cases.

Where you see a place name, like LODI or BERGAMO That's the numbers for the entire provincia, not the city /town itself where cases have been found.

Deaths are marked by town/city. The little black dots. Which helps you work out where most of the provincia cases are.

Sorry. I should have explained when I posted it.

Destinysdaughter · 01/03/2020 18:12

Starting to feel really angry about pp saying they're not going to change travel plans or self isolate ( not on this thread ). This virus is spreading rapidly as we have seen in Italy especially. I despair of pp and I'm so grateful for this thread and the good advice and info on here. I think we all need to do what's best for us in our individual situations and plan andnpreparenaa much as we can. I certainly don't trust the UK Gvt or the great British public. Thank you so much everyone who has posted on here, I've found it really helpful to think about what I can buy ahead of time.

I've tried talking to pp I know in RL but they've all pooh poohed me and are unconcerned, it's no worse than flu etc so I've given up with them now. I don't think anyone on here is scaremongering, I think we saw from China how bad it could get and personally, having watched my dad die from pneumonia it terrifies me.
