I would love to know his reasoning for this.

What does he think we're doing that will prevent a similar situation?

I tried to catch who it was but missed it professor Mark something. He said it's because we know the source of the cases at the moment.

ofwarren · 01/03/2020 17:43

31st January 2 Chinese tourists in Rome

MissPoldark · 01/03/2020 17:43

The question is, do the 779 cases need to be in hospital?

I am scared. This doesn’t fit with the figures.

SansaSnark · 01/03/2020 17:43

@LarkDescending I agree- Bergamo, Lodi and Padova all look like areas of concern to me, and none of them are included in the lockdown list.

WaterSheep · 01/03/2020 17:43

Plantherd

31 January 2020, when two Chinese tourists tested positive in Rome

Then a cluster of cases were detected, starting with 16 confirmed cases in Lombardy on 21 February.

Quick question, trying to talk sense to a family member

Does the cobra decision affect Scotland?

Meruem · 01/03/2020 17:45

I'm just reading the "would you travel within the UK thread" on here and it struck me that all these people saying "yes of course, I'm still going here there and everywhere" are being a bit selfish really. It's this determination to carry on as normal that's caused it to spread as it has across the world. Fair enough if something is pre booked and you really don't want (can't afford) to lose the money. And yes most people have to carry on working. But there isn't a need to go on a day trip or a weekend away. These same people will be moaning like crazy if all the schools need to close etc. But actually if we all limited non essential contact/travel then there might not be a need for drastic measures. There also seems to be a lot of "I'm young and healthy so I'll be ok" but I imagine there aren't many of us who don't have at least one elderly person or immunio compromised person in our family or circle. This isn't a terrorist attack where we need to show we're not afraid. It is an uncontrolled illness that for some will mean death. It doesn't care how "brave" or unconcerned we are.

penguinsonaslide · 01/03/2020 17:47

I don't really understand the saying "can't afford to lose". The money's already gone. It's not going to be any more or less gone if you go on holiday or not. If I pay for a holiday to Tenerife and then don't go, either way that money still isn't in my bank account.

SansaSnark · 01/03/2020 17:48

@Sassenach85 COBRA just stands for cabinet office briefing rooms, so they can make decisions that affect the whole of the UK if they want to.

Meruem · 01/03/2020 17:48

Well yes I don't necessarily disagree with you but this is what people are saying.

oneteen · 01/03/2020 17:48

There is a major airport at Bergamo...

tud41 · 01/03/2020 17:49

Isnt the issue with how many are in hospital tho [italy figures] that at the moment to stop the spread everyone is being put in hospital that has it?

I do agree that Bergamo should have measures put in place tho. i work in an airport and there is a random flight to Bergamo with tui leaving at 1.20am which is weird as we have a curfew so no flights are allowed to take off after 11pm normally and no one i have spoken too seems to know why its going.

LarkDescending · 01/03/2020 17:50

@SansaSnark indeed - and with Bergamo in particular having an international airport serving UK destinations it seems perverse that it has not been the target of greater concern in terms of UK guidance. Bergamo links to known cases have been evident In the public domain for some time.

MargotB7 · 01/03/2020 17:51

We have one thing booked in April in this country. I will not be going if its bad. As you say Penguin the money's gone anyway.

DonkeyKong2019 · 01/03/2020 17:51

@MissPoldark they have run out of spaces in hospitals. There won't be in them unless necessary

Sassenach85 · 01/03/2020 17:51

I’m trying to explain to a family member that she shouldn’t go to Spain next week (lots of reasons) and she’s being so adamant this doesn’t affect her, I mentioned the cobra meeting tomo and she said it doesn’t affect Scotland anyway Hmm

usernameishistory · 01/03/2020 17:52

Those taking unnecessary journeys within the uk or around the world are throwing caution to the wind for their own benefit and don't have a community mind or are just following the so far very vague and pathethic/conflicting public information.

They will be the first moaning about being forced to remain wherever they are, and yes, the money is already spent, unless your trip is many months off yet and you have options to pay deposit/remainder.

WhiteWall1 · 01/03/2020 17:52

Agree @Meruem I had to stop reading
I think a change of attitude may help to slow down the spread

mrshoho · 01/03/2020 17:52

yes Bergamo airport used by lots of skiers. When we went skiing to Aprica in Italy we flew to Bergamo.

Lycidas · 01/03/2020 17:52

Yes the sunk cost fallacy is in operation big time.

Random question: will my hands suffer if I occasional wipe them with Dettol disinfectant wipes while cleaning surfaces (kills human coronavirus as well as bacteria...)

Plantherd · 01/03/2020 17:52

Thanks for the replies.

That's worrying.

I don't understand why they think China has peaked? How do you know when a country will/has peaked (does this mean its unlikely to spread further in the country?)

Just wondering when that will be for other countries or is it really unknown?

itwaseverthus · 01/03/2020 17:53

I've been absolutely loaded with the cold for several weeks, it's unlike any previous cold though. Sore throat comes and goes, have had a temperature for around six hours on two separate days which then subsided as fast as it arrived. No cough. Feel very tired and run down. Fine, it's a common cold and I'm in Scotland where there are no cases yet, that we know of. But I was in close contact with a friend who had just returned from Indonesia three weeks ago, where oddly they also have zero cases! Am starting to get a little concerned. Have self isolated, going stir crazy now after 16 days.

Just really unsure how the screening works because I've been close to someone who travelled back from a packed with Chinese tourist area like Bali, herself unwell with dodgy stomach and cough.

FoxRedBitch · 01/03/2020 17:53

@saltinesandcoffeecups

ODFOD It was a simple question, asking for other peoples views.

After years of different terrorist organisations etc it was a thought that's all.

tud41 · 01/03/2020 17:54

@Plantherd When they say peaked they mean that the amount of new infections is decreasing day after day with the theory that this then gets to a time when there are no new infections. As opposed to Italy when the infections are getting higher and higher every day.
