You are probably right @Buddywoo
It's no extra risk if you are driving over.
What happens there health care wise if you get ill?

NotTerfNorCis · 01/03/2020 17:25

Kindergarten teacher in Spreitenbach, Switzerland, found to be infected - 70 people including 44 children are being informed of quarantine measures.

SansaSnark · 01/03/2020 17:25

I'd go as far as saying the UK travel advice for Northern Italy is now out of date. According to the map shared by a pp, here: lab24.ilsole24ore.com/coronavirus/ There's now a lot of towns with more cases than the original 10.

Lodi, for example, has 237 cases, and isn't included in the original list of towns. Personally, I'd consider avoiding all travel to Lombardy and Veneto.

WitchDoc · 01/03/2020 17:27

@Reallybadidea

I'm not trying to fall out with anyone here, honest.

I didn't personally say they were going to stop testing at 100 confirmed cases, I quoted and linked to an article in the nation press that said they were.

I can offer no evidence of sustained transmission of the virus in the community yet... but I would bet you all my tins of hoarded Spam that there is

cologne4711 · 01/03/2020 17:27

That's a huge increase in cases. I would expect the travel advice for Italy to be updated tomorrow

I've just looked at the list of cases and they're still concentrated in the north, "only" 6 in Rome/Lazio for example.

Interesting that there no cases near the Slovenian border, despite being next to the Veneto and the other northern states.

TakeANote · 01/03/2020 17:27

Gosh the workers at the public health site look HAUNTED. Boris looks like he’s making some inappropriate joke. Terrifying.

ofwarren · 01/03/2020 17:30

What's that on @takeanote ?

missclimpson · 01/03/2020 17:30

I am introducing the British "Hi" to our friends in our French village, to replace the now discouraged handshake and bisous. We were a bit 😮 today when we got our invitation to the annual repas des anciens. Not sure a communal lunch for old folks is a terrifically good idea.
I am wondering if my U3a classes will happen when we go back after half-term.

SansaSnark · 01/03/2020 17:30

I think the advice should be now for anyone who's been to Northern Italy to self isolate. It's probably too little too late, but it would be a start.

I think PHE fucked up when they told ski-trip returners to return to school and work.

I expect we'll see a massive jump in cases this week just from returning tourists- and a lot of those have been told to go into school and work by PHE.

usernameishistory · 01/03/2020 17:30

Agree with you both (ofwarren and Cismyfatarse)

I like your attitude Cismyfatarse. This is a community minded effort for a community issue

SansaSnark · 01/03/2020 17:32

@TakeANote I agree. The woman looks skeptical, but the man looks downright disgusted by whatever he's saying.

WaterSheep · 01/03/2020 17:32

Apparently Boris is confident the NHS have a plan

Redpenguin2020 · 01/03/2020 17:34

566 new cases and 5 new deaths in Italy, for a total of 1,694 cases. Among the 1,577 active cases, 779 (49%) are hospitalized, 140 of which (representing 9% of active cases) are in intensive care. Among the 117 closed cases, 83 (71%) have recovered, 34 (29%) have died.

This is concerning

usernameishistory · 01/03/2020 17:34

but I would bet you all my tins of hoarded Spam that there is @WitchDoc

Perfect humour, most welcome Grin thanks for lightening the intense on here

GorkyMcPorky · 01/03/2020 17:35

I just want to report something positive on here. I was worried, as a teacher, about a booked holiday to Italy (Naples) in April. Jet2 has been brilliant and I have moved it to next year.

@Cismyfatarse, did Jet2 charge an admin fee?

ofwarren · 01/03/2020 17:35

With this update, the number of fatalities worldwide has reached 3,000. More than 88,000 confirmed cases, of which 42,417 people have recovered.

WaterSheep · 01/03/2020 17:36

This is concerning

I'm not one for hyperbole, but I think those figures are truly terrifying

Janemarpling · 01/03/2020 17:37

Guy on sky news saying he doesn't see it going the same way as Italy.

SansaSnark · 01/03/2020 17:38

Boris Johnson also said the government may need to consider closing schools, but expressed that he wanted them to remain open and did not want children to be sent home “unnecessarily”.

Quote from Guardian live feed.

This is what I don't get. The government and PHE seem really against telling individuals to stay off school- when surely that makes sense in a lot of cases, and has less impact than having to close schools.

According to local teachers/schools, on Tuesday, the PHE guidance was to stay home, but on Wednesday, this was reversed (with no good reason) and anyone who didn't go to one of the 10 towns was told they should come into school unless they had symptoms. It's not about economic impact or childcare as these are secondary schools and a sixth form college.

Is it about attempting to avoid panic? Or is it just the government not having a clue?

cocodomingo · 01/03/2020 17:39

@Jrobhatch29 test this as any flu like virus. Pregnant women should be careful of viruses due to the extra oxygen carrying responsibilities of your circulatory system. I was very surprised to hear the pp dsis with flu symptoms plan to visit a pregnant lady in oxford. Unbelievably selfish. There is a paper on the outcomes of pregnant women with SARs. You read Google it and decide but I'm not sure that community outbreak is large enough yet to bring forward your mat leave. Save it as closures may mean you get to go off early any way

WaterSheep · 01/03/2020 17:40

Guy on sky news saying he doesn't see it going the same way as Italy.

I would love to know his reasoning for this.

What does he think we're doing that will prevent a similar situation? Confused

RevolutionofourTime · 01/03/2020 17:40

@ Yecartmannew, your masks are reusable. I would make sure that you identify which mask is being used by which person, so you can each have one and stick to that one, to avoid potential cross contamination. These masks are pretty uncomfortable, some manufacturers recommend wearing them for max 60 minutes at a time. I have N95s which are made of fabric, and they get very very hot, but you get used to it (needs must).

Once used, wipe them or wash them, if washable. Change the filter when the used filter looks dirty or if you notice that breathing is becoming more arduous. Then use again when you go out.

SansaSnark · 01/03/2020 17:40

@Janemarpling on what basis? Unless he's giving actual evidence for that IMO he's talking out of his arse.

I'm not saying we will definitely follow the same pattern as Italy, but our government are being slow to react and indecisive, and there's definitely a chance we could go the same way as Italy. To say he "doesn't see it happening" without explaining why is pointless.

LarkDescending · 01/03/2020 17:41

Having looked at the map posted by NebbiaZanzare I am even more perplexed than before (as discussed on previous threads) as to why Bergamo has not received the same level of concern as Italy’s 11 locked-down towns.

Plantherd · 01/03/2020 17:41

When was Italys first case?
