Well, aren't The Who full of bright ideas. Hmm

Elbow bump still too close for me

Elbow bump is a no for me, considering everyone is being advised to sneeze into them. Envy

I'm getting a bit worried about DS getting home from Japan. Direct flights now seem to be around £2000 (that's just one way in economy). He can get one for £500 with a stop over but where to stop over? One was going via Korea, another via Dubai, neither of which seem great places to stop over right now. It would only be for a couple of hours but still. He's meant to be flying back this coming Friday but who knows what the situation will be then with regards to any travel restrictions. It did occur to me as well that he then needs to get the tube home (I don't drive so can't pick him up). And how many other people like him who will have taken flights from risky countries, are then using public transport in this country to complete their journey. I think it's inevitable that our number of cases here will increase.

Have Italy released any figures today?

After 18:00 usually. Our time, but I think you're an hour behind us so adjust accordingly.

Takes them time to update this even after the figures are released, it can be a few hours until they update the map of cases, but this is still the best one I've found.

100 or a few hundred. What does it matter?

Because the point is that they're not just going to hit the magic 100 and stop testing. And it's based on factors other than simply numbers of cases diagnosed. And this matters because moving away from testing signifies that there is evidence of sustained transmission in the community. Saying that at 100 diagnosed cases bang on we're going to stop testing implies that this will signify sustained transmission. When actually it doesn't.

Tokyo marathon masses race was cancelled for the 38,000 runners. Only the elite race went ahead

PotholeParadise · 01/03/2020 17:07

Okay, feeling less worried now. Test results are coming back, and so far, no-one in the region does have Coronavirus. Clearly one or more nasty bugs going about the towns that seem like Coronavirus, and that is probably what I've got from absent-mindedly touching my face on public transport like an idiot.

DonkeyKong2019 · 01/03/2020 17:10

Is there a French equivalent of that map?

WaterSheep · 01/03/2020 17:11

In other news Boris Johnson has been on a visit to laboratory at the Public Health England National Infection Service in Colindale, North London.

SonjaMorgan · 01/03/2020 17:12

@Meruem I imagine no airport would be amazing to stop in but I have previously flown via Helsinki.

NebbiaZanzare · 01/03/2020 17:13

Is there a French equivalent of that map?

I looked for one last night, but despite speaking Italian allegedly helping you understand French ... I came up empty.

Hopeful a French speaker will find one and post the link.

PotholeParadise · 01/03/2020 17:15

Wikipedia has one, but I can't figure out the sourcing, and I doubt it's efficiently updated. Last updated yesterday.

WaterSheep · 01/03/2020 17:15

The number of confirmed cases in Italy has risen to almost 1,700, and the death toll has increased from five to 34, Reuters reports.

WaterSheep · 01/03/2020 17:17

That should say increased by 5, to 34.

They were on 1128 cases and 29 deaths.

DonkeyKong2019 · 01/03/2020 17:18

Thank you. Will keep an eye out!

That is a massive jump for italy

RedToothBrush · 01/03/2020 17:18

By the end of next week I was hoping we'd be around 100 cases, but I wouldn't be surprised if it were double that now.

I think we will be at 200 to 300 minimum

In terms of new cases today, the Essex one is concerning. The others are all traceable.

Thats the Surrey GP and the Essex case which suggest local transmission. These are the places to keep an eye on for more cases. You would expect clusters to start appearing here rather than anywhere else.

Re panic buying... I'm unsurprised that hand sanitiser is gone. The hand wash too. And big roll cos that's been the first thing to go in other countries.

If we get a number of localised cases in the next week that's when panic buying is going to start kicking in properly.

Buddywoo · 01/03/2020 17:18

We are going to Spain for a month at the end of March as we have a holiday home there. We will drive over and, to be frank, I would rather self isolate there than here. We are both in our seventies, therefore at risk, but it won't stop us. I don't think there is any more risk going to Spain than staying here.

SansaSnark · 01/03/2020 17:19

Italy update: Total cases: 1700, Total deaths: 34

Source: www.theguardian.com/world/live/2020/mar/01/coronavirus-latest-updates-coronavirus-live-updates-latest-news-china-wuhan-stock-markets-update-china-iran-us-australia-south-korea-japan

That's a huge increase in cases. I would expect the travel advice for Italy to be updated tomorrow.

ofwarren · 01/03/2020 17:20

Italy reports 566 new cases of coronavirus and 5 new deaths, raising total to 1,694 cases and 34 dead t.co/eUoE2b20hL

Cismyfatarse1 · 01/03/2020 17:21

I just want to report something positive on here. I was worried, as a teacher, about a booked holiday to Italy (Naples) in April. Jet2 has been brilliant and I have moved it to next year.

I don't want to let down exam classes by being stuck overseas or increasing the risk. I can't control what other people do but I feel much better for doing this. And they were lovely on the phone.

ofwarren · 01/03/2020 17:22

Those figures are MASSIVE..
That's where we are heading if we make no changes. Why can't people see this?
It's all well and good saying, "it's only 30 odd cases here" but we will be like Italy if we do DO something.

ofwarren · 01/03/2020 17:22

Don't do something...

ofwarren · 01/03/2020 17:23

That's great about Jet2 cis

penguinsonaslide · 01/03/2020 17:24

An upside to this outbreak, for an introvert like myself, is that I will have an excellent excuse to avoid all social gatherings for the forseeable future.
