@WitchDoc that was an article from 16th Feb, so things are probably changing daily, or hourly by now so may well be different

FlamingoAndJohn · 01/03/2020 16:34

I’m booked to go to Spain at Easter. I’m not cancelling yet, not until I’m told I need to or it seems much more serious.
I’m lucky in that I can afford to lose the money. I’ll be disappointed but it’s not the end of the world.

I have been reading this thread for a while. I went to two this weekend supermarkets for shopping (Lidl and Asda) and looked for hand gel- both out of stock. The hand wash areas were decimated. Which in some ways was good, but as I need handgel for work less good.

Also went to Costco- it was heaving. People buying a lot of toilet paper.

16th was before the Italy outbreak really took off. For me, that was the game changer, and I would expect it to be for the NHS/PHE too. I can't believe we'll now stop testing at 100 cases, and if we do I think that would be a really odd/stupid decision.

WitchDoc · 01/03/2020 16:37

@Purpleheadgirl

I welcome an updated link to any article or new information you find.

MabelMoo23 · 01/03/2020 16:38

Why would testing stop at 100 cases? Am I being a bit dense?

ofwarren · 01/03/2020 16:38

Think about it, how could they stop testing?
They can't tell the WHO, "yeah we've stop testing at 100 so we don't know how many cases we have"
They just won't follow them up

WaterSheep · 01/03/2020 16:38

Have Italy released any figures today?

feesh · 01/03/2020 16:39

@BunsyGirl I’m in AD and the authorities are acting very strangely here. They have closed all nurseries (allegedly for a deep clean) but many are speculating that they’re sitting on something that’s about to kick off. I wouldn’t come. Policy movements in recent days suggest they’re about to bring in some sweeping provisions to try and stop further cases.

Purpleheadgirl · 01/03/2020 16:40

@WitchDoc I haven't got one....merely pointing out that things have changed quite a lot in the last 14 days :)

SansaSnark · 01/03/2020 16:41

@WaterSheep I don't think Italy have- I think yesterday they might have released their figures quite late in the evening too?

MissPoldark · 01/03/2020 16:41

I’m a bit puzzled at people going mad for soap & handwash, do people not usually get washed properly Confused

FlamingoAndJohn · 01/03/2020 16:42

I’m guessing it’s making sure you’ve got enough in stock.

ChipotleBlessing · 01/03/2020 16:42

One of the Dutch unknown transmission cases was actually in intensive care for a different health problem from the 21st February. There’s a possibility it was hospital acquired and the hospital has been sealed off for cleaning. Two of the others were both at the same (large) carnival event, which seems to be what they’re looking at.

WaterSheep · 01/03/2020 16:43

I think yesterday they might have released their figures quite late in the evening too?

Ah are they doing the same as the UK, and only announcing once a day?

TakeANote · 01/03/2020 16:44

I think after 100 cases they basically move to the next stage of pandemic management - basically accept its out in the community and move towards telling people to self-isolate if they are sick and just treat the most severely ill people.

quiteathome · 01/03/2020 16:47

Wondering if the London Marathon is likely to be cancelled. (Tokyo was cancelled and Paris half marathon was cancelled at the weekend.)

BunsyGirl · 01/03/2020 16:47

@feesh

Thanks for that. I had noticed that they had closed all nurseries as I have been searching for news on the situation in AD. I would be happy if they banned all flights from the U.K., although I know that is a little selfish of me.

SansaSnark · 01/03/2020 16:48

@WaterSheep I think they've been doing that for a while now. It's probably the best way forwards when they are having over 100 confirmed cases a day.

Reallybadidea · 01/03/2020 16:49

'Stopping testing at 100 cases' I believe is based on the Pandemic Influenza Response Plan assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/344695/PI_Response_Plan_13_Aug.pdf

It actually says that testing may stop after the first few hundred, not 100 and would only be if there is evidence of sustained transmission ie there's not much point testing anymore because it's getting passed on within the community and diagnosis can be based on clinical symptoms.

Doesn't actually mean that's what's going to happen in this case.

WitchDoc · 01/03/2020 16:51

things have changed quite a lot in the last 14 days :)

Yes they have for those who haven't been following it since the start.

tinytemper66 · 01/03/2020 16:53

Tokyo marathon went ahead but streets were quiet and less runners.

WaterSheep · 01/03/2020 16:56

The WHO’s director of pandemic diseases, Sylvie Briand, is endorsing the elbow bump and footshakes as safer alternatives to shaking hands.

WitchDoc · 01/03/2020 16:57

@Reallybadidea

100 or a few hundred. What does it matter?

The reality is we are in a pandemic regardless of what The WHO has reclassified it as.

The virus is here, it's spreading, the likelihood is that a vast majority of the population is going to catch it & going to be fine, some others not so much and households should prepare accordingly.

MissPoldark · 01/03/2020 16:57

Elbow bump still too close for me Grin
