See, with most getting it abroad why are we not banning travel.

ofwarren · 01/03/2020 16:17

Where did you get that info @watersheep

usernotfound0000 · 01/03/2020 16:17

@WaterSheep do you have a link for that please? I'm in Leeds and getting worried.

SansaSnark · 01/03/2020 16:19

@BunsyGirl Yeah, the quarantine is the bit that would be the worst for a lot of people, that and not being able to get back to the UK and being stuck abroad with potentially limited funds. I agree with the PP who said don't cancel, as there's still a chance of getting your money back, and decide closer to the time. A lot could change in 4 weeks.

@Emptywallet That does sound like a tricky situation for the school and you. If you're worried and the head will agree then I think keeping your own children off for another week is sensible, especially if they're not in an exam year?

ofwarren · 01/03/2020 16:22

Ffs!
Leeds is where my son's hospital is

Horse has well and truly bolted for banning air travel

Newjez · 01/03/2020 16:23

@SansaSnark

I guess the test will be if we hit a hundred this week, and if so, how early. I expect if we hit a hundred this week we will move from containment to mitigation.

I agree regards USA. From our view they look like they are ignoring the problem and hoping it will go away. Not really what I expected from the leader of the free world.

Jellykat · 01/03/2020 16:24

Don't know if it's been mentioned, but second Coronavirus case in Gloucestershire, this time in Tetbury. (Still can't find out where first case was/is)

WaterSheep · 01/03/2020 16:24

I guess the test will be if we hit a hundred this week, and if so, how early.

If it's still below 100 by Wednesday then i'd be very surprised.

WitchDoc · 01/03/2020 16:25

@Newjez when we hit 100 they stop testing for it

They don't witch they just stop tracing contacts.

oneteen · 01/03/2020 16:27

I'd be surprised if it is not 100 by tomorrow...

fedup21 · 01/03/2020 16:28

when we hit 100 they stop testing for it

Why is that? Won’t it be impossible to track if so?

FlamingoAndJohn · 01/03/2020 16:29

However what we do have is a border where everyone's passport needs to be checked upon entry.

I live in a port town. I can see the docks from my house. I don’t know if they are checking any of the crew of the boats. We also sometimes get day trippers on private boats, although not many at this time of year.

I don’t expect anyone is checking them.

ShanghaiDiva · 01/03/2020 16:29

@BiBiBirdie
Re banning travel, the govt could have introduced measures at end of January - HK introduced compulsory 14 day quarantine for arrivals from China thus dramatically reducing arrivals without closing the border (one country, two systems) and Australia closed the border to arrivals from China who were not Australian citizens or did not have permanent residency.
Uk did not do anything as far as I can tell. I arrived 14 days ago from HK and there were no health checks on the plane. This can be contrasted with the Chinese approach where arrivals from South Korea are now being put into quarantine for 14 days in hotels, even though they have no symptoms.

oneteen · 01/03/2020 16:30

Did anyone watch the pandemic documentary the other week which was just one spreader in one town ...numbers just escalate very quickly.

WitchDoc · 01/03/2020 16:30

@ofwarren

Senior NHS managers have been told the service will stop testing for the strain known as Covid-19 once around 100 cases have been confirmed.

georgedawes · 01/03/2020 16:30

I think they may still test at 100, but not contact tracing?

BunsyGirl · 01/03/2020 16:30

@SansaSnark No, I’m not planning to cancel at the moment as I know things can change quickly. I just wish that it was a cheaper holiday so cancelling it would be easier to stomach!

WaterSheep · 01/03/2020 16:32

18 new cases in Spain for a total of 82 cases, of which 3 in critical condition.

georgedawes · 01/03/2020 16:33

Ah ok

SansaSnark · 01/03/2020 16:34

If we look at German cases, they were about where we were on Wednesday, and now there are over 100 cases. I agree that we might follow a similar pattern, so 100 cases by Wednesday/Thursday.

If that doesn't happen, I think that would be a really good sign.

If we're well above that, I think we need to still think about where the cases are coming from- if they're mostly people who went on holiday to Italy, that's a very different scenario to if they are mostly community transmission.

This week is definitely a tipping point, though.

The Netherlands is an interesting one- 10 cases, but already some of unknown origin. That suggests to me community transmission and probably higher levels than the 10 known cases suggest.
