Allowances are routinely applied every year for extenuating circumstances, and remarks.

Absolute minefield . Though it depends on the amount of schools affected. Nationwide they would be better delaying them. Can just imagine my year 11's moaning now.

SansaSnark · 01/03/2020 15:42

There's some information about pregnancy here, but unfortunately it seems to boil down to "we don't know" at this stage.

Also, summer will see a rise in temps and lower risk of viral survival and spread so makes a lot of sense.

At least the govt are looking at that now.

YouAreTheEggManIAmTheWalrus · 01/03/2020 15:44

So NHS are only concerned about/testing people who have been to hotspots.. and only once they’re symptomatic.. yet we know this virus is spread asymptomatically, faster than pretty much anything else we’ve ever encountered and with a high infection rate per person.

So when exactly will they start testing people who have the symptoms and may have unwittingly crossed paths with said people who travelled from the hotspots? I can’t get my head around it when they know exactly how pandemics develop yet aren’t acting upon that knowledge. I get that there are so many people with colds and flu at the moment and testing everyone who presents with a temperature isn’t exactly viable. So what, we wait until people are critical until testing? Is that the way they’ll proceed from herein? Theres no clarity on this that I’ve seen.

usernameishistory · 01/03/2020 15:45

Allowances for extenuating circumstances and remarks.

It might be, but that is how its worked for years.
Tbh year 11s are very good at moaning about any changes full stop Grin

Delatron · 01/03/2020 15:46

I thought we knew that this virus can survive in high temperatures (Singapore)?

Emptywallet · 01/03/2020 15:46

Been lurking on these threads.

My kids school was one of the first to close it doors due to a school trip to Italy and some pupils and teachers returning feeling sick.

We reopen on Monday. Not sure how I feel about it tbh considering we’re only one week in to a possible 14 day incubation period. I think they may have had pressure of other parents.

AvocadoOwl · 01/03/2020 15:47

That's exactly what they've been doing this week @YouAreTheEggManIAmTheWalrus and how the cases without travel history were picked up. Several hospitals and 100 GP surgeries have been testing all patients with flu symptoms.

SansaSnark · 01/03/2020 15:47

I thought the NHS was doing screening testing at about 100 clinics now for all people with flu like symptoms. AFIAK, that's how the Essex and Surrey cases were picked up.

I would guess the plan is to roll this out to more clinics if and when these 100 clinics start picking up more people with symptoms.

They're also doing contact tracing for any cases discovered- obviously you could unwittingly cross paths, but if you worked with them or something like that you'd get picked up.

usernameishistory · 01/03/2020 15:47

Well I wondered that too, but it has been stated on here across the threads.

Are the Singapore stats comparable then?

WaterSheep · 01/03/2020 15:48

Taking into account the increase in cases in the UK, I expect the next few days to look a bit like this.

Mon 55
Tues 83
Wed 122

By the end of next week I was hoping we'd be around 100 cases, but I wouldn't be surprised if it were double that now.

PotholeParadise · 01/03/2020 15:48

Anyone who has traveled to Northern Italy, South Korea, Iran and China to stay off regardless of showing symptoms. (Possibly Japan, Germany, France too)
-Anyone (regardless of travel) with a cough and or temp should stay off.
-Any individual schools with further concerns should be closed for deep cleans as and when required.
-Any schools with a diagnosed case to close for 2 weeks, and review the situation before re-opening. Localised school closures for as long as necessary.
-Any pupils who's parents wish to keep them home should be allowed to stay home, without fines or losing their school place.

I broadly agree with this. I want to keep mine off for the sake of other people without being fined...

SansaSnark · 01/03/2020 15:49

@Emptywallet I agree that if they've made the decision to close, then closing for 2 weeks would be more sensible. However, staying closed in spite of PHE advice will be tricky for a school.

As a middle ground, perhaps all school trip students should stay home for an extra week?

Yecartmannew · 01/03/2020 15:51

De lurking to ask a question. Been following since thread 1.

I have a box of FP3 masks and I know how to put it on and take it off without touching the front of it, but given I will have to re use it what should I do with it once I have taken it off?

I have a bin store next to my front door so could leave it in there but would it be best to hang it up, lay it down etc?

Also, should I spray it with dettol fabric spray or just leave it be?

We have one box between 3 of us so could rotate 3 masks each to give them time to dry out between uses.

Thanks

SansaSnark · 01/03/2020 15:51

@PotholeParadise

Yes, on the one hand, parents need to be able to keep their children home without risking fines, and on the other, schools need to be able to make students who may be a transmission risk stay home without being accused of illegal exclusions.

Would your head be sympathetic if you explained why you were keeping your DC off? They don't have to fine.

Delatron · 01/03/2020 15:52

They may as well not close the school at all if they’re only going to do it for one week (unless some further self isolate for another week?). The incubation period is two weeks, that’s well known. What’s the theory behind just closing for a week?

TakeANote · 01/03/2020 15:53

These closures of schools etc are only to delay lots of people getting it at once: if it is a pandemic then the NHS needs to avoid a massive peak in patients all at once. Italy sounds horrific with the numbers intubated at the present time.

We will almost all get it eventually I guess - ideally you just want to delay so if you need hospitalisation, there is a bed available.

SonjaMorgan · 01/03/2020 15:53

Temperatures are 18 degrees in Wuhan now and they are still getting new cases?

Paddlinglikehell · 01/03/2020 15:53

I believe I’m pretty level headed, I don’t tend to panic, but I’ve bought a bit extra for the freezer, got my loo rolls 👍 hand gel etc. I estimate we will be ok for a couple of weeks with freezer and tins.

In fact I went to London Sat, I used gel, wore wool gloves on underground and put everything we wore in the wash. Maybe over. cautious, but felt sensible.

I’m going to work tomorrow at a large University, full of foreign students, it is not an option not to going, but I am hoping the lecturers who are due to strike this week do so.

What else can we do? My dd is immunocompromised, she gets a flu jab each year, but will be going to school, despite the fact they too had a group in Italy over half term.

This is real life, my situation is the same as most of you, we can’t just stop, but we can plan and be careful.

So to those who are coming on here and saying how ridiculous we are, that’s fine, in fact I feel a bit ridiculous shopping for extra tea bags and stocking up on flu plus, but it makes me feel better, why come and make anyone feel worse? Does it make you feel better?
Just pi—- off 🙁

NemophilistRebel · 01/03/2020 15:54

@Jrobhatch29 I’m also 7 months pregnant and really scared

We cancelled our holiday leaving Friday just gone as I didn’t want to get stuck in quarantine in another country or catch anything from airports

Also scared about when I go in for c section in May that there will still be beds

BunsyGirl · 01/03/2020 15:54

We have a family holiday booked for four weeks time. I don’t want to go (DH is on the fence) but, if we cancel, that’s £6.5k gone that we won’t get back.

WaterSheep · 01/03/2020 15:55

BunsyGirl Where abouts are you supposed to be travelling to?

usernameishistory · 01/03/2020 15:56

In the current climate parents should be able to self isolate their DC without risks of punitive measures, especially with medical histories, or recent contact, recent holiday risk zone and so on.

Children are super-spreaders full stop!

The happy birthday to me song was needed right at the start.

If one of mine was linking public structures, handles, railings and so on, I wouldnt want them out until that calmed down, although it doesn't pose such a risk.

I haven't read that any dc have lost their lives, just do a fab job of spreading.

fedup21 · 01/03/2020 15:56

I bet there’s loads of people with holidays booked over the Easter holiday-I can see things getting much worse next month.

oneteen · 01/03/2020 15:56

I was in Costa this morning which is normally heaving on a Sunday morning - but not today and not yesterday either according to the staff (who said payday weekend is normally busier than normal).

The supermarket, however, was heaving, so I wonder if the concern levels are increasing and people are less likely to go out for coffee and more likely to stock up on food.
