I didnt see any pp say that, what have I missed?

presumably you must have missed the 1000s of threads saying should I go on holiday

I presumed this thread was in general terms, are we not allowed to reference things people are generally saying?

hoovermyrug · 01/03/2020 15:26

Additionally you can be prepared and informed and calm. So yes you are being entirely patronising.

ofwarren · 01/03/2020 15:26

If you are 60+ or if you have an underlying condition like:
-cardiovascular disease
-respiratory condition
-diabetes
you have a higher risk of developing severe #COVID19. You may wish to avoid crowded areas or places where you might interact with people who are sick"-@DrTedros

Just imagine if it's your GCSE or A Level year

My dd is doing GCSEs this year. If schools closed for any significant period of time it would certainly impact her results. They haven't finished all of the study courses, and she still has controlled assessments to be done... let alone if the situation goes on into the actual exam season. I would assume, though, that in an exceptional circumstance such as that would be, they would come up with some sort of scheme to mitigate the situation....

SansaSnark · 01/03/2020 15:26

I do think there's some mileage in shutting schools for an extra week either side of the Easter Holidays, or maybe opening to exam classes only for that time.

I also think if schools shut tomorrow, if we still saw a big rise in cases (e.g. people returning from Italy showing symptoms and being tests) next week, people would potentially say it wasn't working and reopening them. I think when we get to Italy levels of cases and transmission, shutting schools would have more of an impact on the rate of spread and be more worthwhile.

penguinsonaslide · 01/03/2020 15:26

my husband has a colleague due to go on a skiing holiday to italy next week, she is worried about coronavirus but won't cancel as it is already paid for. Shows what people's priorities are really. This is someone who works in a well paid industry who could afford the hit.

usernameishistory · 01/03/2020 15:27

There are always olenty of conspiracy theories redfox

Canada sacked viroligists in grade 4 lab for apparently sending viruses to wuhan (iirc) ...who knows, who cares.

Lets get on with containing the spread and keeping well instead.

Anothernamechange2020 · 01/03/2020 15:28

@SansaSnark so far it has been suggested that we:

Double up and teach classes of 60, whilst
Setting online homework, whilst
Wearing a mask.

Would you not agree that we'd be more likely to go off with stress! Can you imagine? With a likely scenario of constant emails of parents who cant fathom the work because the curriculum is so different to what it was. Confused

Wynona · 01/03/2020 15:28

You are right I have not read 8000 posts. I googled Coronavirus and this was one of the most popular threads. I had not realised that being calm would cause offence.

Clearly I have misjudged mumsnet. Sorry.

Filitheyofun · 01/03/2020 15:28

Think about poor people having chemo young and old. I remember when I was having chemotherapy 7 years ago, being told that "the common cold could kill me". Please think of people who have underlying health problems. This is not scaremongering. If this was 7 years ago I would not being sending my children to primary school so if anyone is going through chemotherapy and you have young children school age i would keep them off the schools should understand.

@FoxRedBitch bit of a shit bio weapon with only around a 1-10% mortality rate!

hoovermyrug · 01/03/2020 15:29

You googled 'Coronavirus' and then came on here to tell us all why you're not worried and going for a walk? Right you are... bye then

penguinsonaslide · 01/03/2020 15:30

yeah I don't think it's a bio weapon. I actually think people would prefer to believe it is man made as then we would have a modicum of control over it. The truth is much scarier, frankly.

User1775564212 · 01/03/2020 15:30

Is anyone keeping their kids off school next week?

Delatron · 01/03/2020 15:31

The fact that we are an island means we could have acted far more decisively earlier on at airports.

Thousands of people are arriving every day from affected areas then mingling in the community. I don’t feel too positive to be honest. I think our window for containment is over.

Once it’s out there it’s out there. People are placing a lot of faith in ‘contact tracing’. So two weeks later people show symptoms and are isolated then the contact tracing begins. What do we think has been happening in the intervening period? People carrying the virus have been going about their day to day lives. The numbers will keep going up. They are not just going to stay at 35!

SansaSnark · 01/03/2020 15:31

@usernameishistory yes, someone did- it's on the page of the thread you posted on, ironically.

To be clear, I'm not anti school closures, although I think there are in between measures that could be taken next week, rather than closing all schools.

But if schools are closed for 5 weeks, don't expect the time to be made up elsewhere.

Anyway, the government's current view is totally the opposite- keep schools open with a skeleton staff and scrap health and safety rules. Which is a stupid response too.

DonkeyKong2019 · 01/03/2020 15:31

Another option is to close schools to all but exam years? Keep the gross germ spreading little ones off

Janemarpling · 01/03/2020 15:31

Not too worried about GCSE or A-Levels - if exams don't take place they will just use predicted grades.

This is teacher lead though. Has too much bias and little rigour.

usernameishistory · 01/03/2020 15:31

Sorry?

Who has said on here, fuck your holiday, or fuck your qualifications.

Its not what here is about.

Its about remaining reasoned and having sensible discussion, not claiming people are swearing and dismissive, or escalating a potentially awful situation where people posting on here could potentially suffer as a result of their own health or family and friends.

Theres no need or gain from claiming pp are telling others fuck you, its inflammatory.

hoovermyrug · 01/03/2020 15:32

@penguinonaslide my DH has potentially got a job interview in an affected area (not Europe). We can't afford for him to get stuck there...

DonkeyKong2019 · 01/03/2020 15:32

I wouldn't send my 5 year old in to a class of 60

I have just popped to Tesco to get some basics. The queue was so long it was like it was the build up to Christmas. I went to the other Tesco in Hookwood. The same thing there and all the shelves practically empty. No toilet paper no hand gel and other basics and the shop was full of people. One man in front of me coughed and heads turned to glare at him. This seems so surreal at the moment.

Purpleheadgirl · 01/03/2020 15:33

If schools shut it's also the year 6 sats tests in early May that would be affected - would imagine they could be delayed until second half term, or even to be sat at the secondary school early September.

Why is there no information or advice about pregnant women? I am 7 months pregnant and really concerned
