Just imagine if it's your GCSE or A Level year (or degree finals).

penguinsonaslide · 01/03/2020 15:15

I think there is no chance at all of stopping this spreading in the UK. Was brought home to me massively just now as had to go to the supermarket for dinner bits (shop not being delivered til tomorrow). Woman in front of me in the queue sneezed twice - the first time without covering her mouth at all, the second time covering her mouth but with her hand, which she then proceeded to use to touch a bunch of packets of chocolate and hot cross buns lining the aisle.

The only thing I can do is limit going out as much as I can. I WFH but do have to go to occasional meetings in London (I live in london anyway). DH works in an office and thus will bring it back anyway. DS is at nursery. It's just impossible. It is going to spread. All we can do is hope for the best.

Netherlands reports 3 new cases of coronavirus, raising total to 10, some of them of unknown origin; 1 woman seriously ill t.co/eUoE2b20hL

penguinsonaslide · 01/03/2020 15:16

Also, sorry but fuck people's holidays. Flying at a moment's notice has become too easy and convenient now anyway. Perhaps this will wake people up, as climate change hasn't seemed to.

tangledyarn · 01/03/2020 15:16

Wondering what to do in this situation..close family member moved to tokyo just before xmas. I don't think they have anymore chance of catching covid19 there than here really but I am really worried that if they did they dont know anyone and dont speak a word of Japanese yet. I'm thinking of encouraging them to come back and stay with me for a few weeks but dont know if I'm being daft. They are not high risk age wise but are asthmatic and am just thinking of the logistics of them trying to navigate the healthcare system/cope with isolation in that situation if they did become unwell.

FoxRedBitch · 01/03/2020 15:17

Is there a map somewhere which shows the numbers in different countries? I have a friend who travels internationally and is going to a few countries over the next month.

He children are at school with mine (same classes) and she's not the best when it comes to hygiene, nor are her kids.

I'm going to give my kids some hand sanitizer for their school bags, they aren't amazing at washing hands but may show off a bit with the gel and at least use it for a laugh.

usernameishistory · 01/03/2020 15:17

Just imagine if it's your GCSE or A Level year (or degree finals).

Mmmm...but just imagine if you are near fatalities have dc with serious health concerns, and one of the fatalities was a teacher, or you were at that school.

Or you have family already ill/admitted for treatment, and elderly relatives who are frail, your exams can be delayed, death should be avoided at all costs.

FoxRedBitch · 01/03/2020 15:18

Can you imagine the help to climate change if they grounded all flights for the next month?!?

ofwarren · 01/03/2020 15:18

The 3 cases of #coronavirus in Czech Republic have all been to #Italy and 1 of them is an American citizen. She’s only 21 years old.

oneteen · 01/03/2020 15:18

I can see schools closing for an early easter break in an attempt to curb the spread of the virus...maybe even as early as 16th March.

Not too worried about GCSE or A-Levels - if exams don't take place they will just use predicted grades.

Blueberryham · 01/03/2020 15:19

I am not sure how much to worry about the fact it is a new virus which we know so little about. If it has similarities to hiv is it a virus which cannot actually be cleared effectively from the system. Maybe it permanently stays with you and affects your immunity system forever, occasionally having replases. Everyone thinks it’s just a flu or a bad cold but we know so little about it, it’s so scary

Wynona · 01/03/2020 15:20

Hoovermyrug. The opening thread states "To be worried about Coronavirus - Part 8" It is in the chat group of AIBU?

Does that mean that only people that are worried are allowed to have a view? I don't think that being calm is patronising.

DonkeyKong2019 · 01/03/2020 15:20

It's a bit 6 of one, half a dozen of the other when it comes to options then.

When it comes to closing schools with confirmed cases what about schools that are closely linked? Ie our secondary got confirmed cases but there are multiple siblings in the local primary schools.

penguinsonaslide · 01/03/2020 15:21

She’s only 21 years old.

Not sure that's anything to be concerned about in isolation, we already knew younger people could get the virus.

hoovermyrug · 01/03/2020 15:22

@Wynona perhaps if you'd read the past 8 threads you might realise your a

FoxRedBitch · 01/03/2020 15:22

Is there a way that this virus could have been made as in by terrorists or an evil country to try and wipe out a large number of people?

SansaSnark · 01/03/2020 15:22

It's all very well saying "fuck people's holidays", but actually the retention situation for teachers in England especially is really dire right now. There are a lot of teachers who are on the edge of quitting and "fuck people's holidays/weddings/main chance to see family" is a thing that could tip them over the edge.

Also, GCSE and A-level results do follow students for life. Is it fair to be saying "fuck people's futures" too.

If I'm expected to work over the summer, I won't be sending any work home or doing marking. If I'm expected to do that, I won't work over the summer without extra pay.

If you want schools shut now, then fair enough- but don't assume it'll be easy to make time up in the summer.

usernameishistory · 01/03/2020 15:22

penguins. Yes, exactly. The till staff don't even have to wear gloves to protect themselves, or shoppers! They handle everything that everyone else has handled and pass it on to everyone else.

One on a till wiped/itched their nose with their hand then continued to pick up shoppers items!

I was browsing the aisles, empty apart from one other who was coughing on the products, and alternately on their hand and picking up the products then returning them to the shelf. I said could you consider the germs you are spreading to others by doing that, their answers, very difficult to understand about not speaking english. How are they managing if they dont understand the news?

DonkeyKong2019 · 01/03/2020 15:23

@FoxRedBitch technically yes but likelihood in reality? Very very very slim chance

tud41 · 01/03/2020 15:24

@Delatron while you are right we do not have special powers. However what we do have is a border where everyone's passport needs to be checked upon entry. This may not stop the virus coming in but it is a huge advantage that can help with contact tracing etc.

Where as Italy shares land borders with 6 countries where people can freely move about between them all without anyone knowing where they are or where they have been.

Anothernamechange2020 · 01/03/2020 15:24

@DonkeyKong2019 I have had the exact same conversation with a colleague. Lots of feeder secondary schools have siblings at the primary school.
For the record, I don't think your idea of closing schools now is a bad one, but the government needs to enforce it. I have a colleague who is getting married in the summer so I think there'd need to be clear guidelines.
At best, we are following the rather sketchy guidelines from the government but parents (quite rightly) still ha e questions...

usernameishistory · 01/03/2020 15:24

Did someone say 'fuck peoples holidays'

I didnt see any pp say that, what have I missed?

hoovermyrug · 01/03/2020 15:24

@wynona your arch tone isn't in the spirit of the 8 part thread.

@mumsnet can we move this out of AIBU please and into its own section???

saltinesandcoffeecups · 01/03/2020 15:24

@FoxRedBitch

Please stop with the conspiracy theories or take them to Twitter where they belong.

penguinsonaslide · 01/03/2020 15:24

Also, GCSE and A-level results do follow students for life. Is it fair to be saying "fuck people's futures" too.

their futures will more than likely be fucked anyway if this virus is allowed to spread unchecked without people taking it seriously.
