They then admitted it was caused by a Lab next to the wet market not practicing safely and that allowed it to escape and infect people.

Source?

EgonSpengler2020 · 01/03/2020 12:17

@BiBiBirdie

and you genuinely trust anything coming from Wuhan? I don't. Hell no.

It's the best and only information we have to go on to inform clinical and logistical decision making at the moment. Ignoring it and going blind would just be stupid.

AvocadoOwl · 01/03/2020 12:17

@BiBiBirdie a speculative shit stirring article in the Mirror does not count as actual news.

Reallybadidea · 01/03/2020 12:17

I can understand your cynicism BiBiBirdie but I think that over the next few weeks, with increasing numbers of people outside China becoming infected, it will become clearer how much credence we can give to the figures from China. Nothing so far suggests that they have significantly understated the risks for children.

magicrainbowbeans · 01/03/2020 12:18

I'm at parents trying to talk to them about it. Their level of knowledge is next to zero. I'm asking, have you paid attention to the news? Basically oblivion. I feel like I'm talking to stupid.

Both are over 55, former smokers and immune compromised. One busy coughing over everything with 'a virus' (diagnosed by GP this week) and only washing hands once coughed on under pressure from me, and complaining about it. I feel very yuck being in the house. Partly wanting DD to see them in case we all get quarantined, partly mad at anyone who takes so little care (and is therefore likely to spread to others).

I feel like I'm trying to convey the basics of hand washing to a 5 year old. No comprehension about touching door handles, money. In front of me spreading loose chance over surfaces used to prepare food. Frustrated.

Random18 · 01/03/2020 12:18

Someone tested positive in HK after working in London.

Doesn't say how long they were working in UK for belut tested positive just a couple of days after arriving in Hong Kong.

And a women took her child to minor injuries with an raised temperature. Child was at same school as kids who had recently returned from Italy. Hopefully something else but seriously why would you go to Minor Injuries (assuming 111 did not advise it!!)

BiBiBirdie · 01/03/2020 12:21

I'm literally to the point of refusing to answer anyone happy to be spoonfed bollocks (not on this thread) other than to say "under his eye" as there are some really scarily gullible people about.
Like in any situation the government will stand up and say we're screwed, the NHS won't cope, do what you can to protect your own as we can't do it. They would be out of Number ten by tea time.
They love all the gullibility of people.

Random18 · 01/03/2020 12:22

To correct my above post. Flew into Hong Kong but tested positive in Szechuan

Quartz2208 · 01/03/2020 12:22

Whereas I think China did cover up in the early days the amount of WHO/CDC etc officials who have since visited means that it now must be fairly credible
There is evidence though that 2 strains exist and the European one is different
Also the Wuhan data is markedly different from the rest of China

I'm not gullible I'm a HCP who believes in evidence based practice. I have read multiple peer reviewed articles written my medical professionals in China and watch the WHO updates and the royal college of physicians seminar.

It is a novel virus, the information is limited, but ignoring what information we have would be negligent.

China have produced data that says that they weren't great at managing Covid 19 at the start as reflected by the high early cfr, they are now much better at treating it getting the cfr down significantly. Why would any country ignore the lessons they have learnt?

woodpigeons · 01/03/2020 12:31

I worked in aid work in Africa for many years. Always in rural areas usually several hours travel from big cities.
I saw live, and sometimes dead, wild animals being sold in markets, pangolins, snakes, monkeys, tortoises, antelopes, some sort of big rat like animal, and quite possibly others as I didn’t go to meat markets very often.
They were sold alongside more usual sources of meat and the people able to buy them were not at all well off.
People also hunted these animals and they were also on the menu at small roadside restaurants.
This was said to be the cause of Ebola and no doubt possibly other viruses.

BiBiBirdie · 01/03/2020 12:32

@EgonSpengler2020 I quite clearly put not on this thread

MissPoldark · 01/03/2020 12:37

@Quartz2208 do you have a link for that please, regarding the 2 strains

Anothernamechange2020 · 01/03/2020 12:40

Have just come back from church. We have different stations for communion where we break the bread ourselves and drink the wine. From what I could see today, most people tool part.

WaterSheep · 01/03/2020 12:41

I know there were a few worried about the Pope, myself included. He's recovered enough to make his Sunday address, but has cancelled a planned spiritual retreat which was supposed to start today.

Still no word on what's wrong with him, but he does seem slightly improved.

Reallybadidea · 01/03/2020 12:44

@Quartz2208 do you have a link for that please, regarding the 2 strains

Yes I'd be interested in seeing that two.

Actually, it would be really good if generally posters could provide links to back up what they're saying on these threads. Helps distinguish between the credible sources of information and the "my mum's friend's hairdresser knows someone who.." stuff.

SistemaAddict · 01/03/2020 12:45

No alcohol hand gel to be found in my small town. Hand wash was in low supply too.

Reallybadidea · 01/03/2020 12:45

two too 🤦‍♀️

GenevaMaybe · 01/03/2020 12:46

Absolutely no hand gel available in France or Switzerland from what I can see. Soap and water it is!!

LarkDescending · 01/03/2020 12:50

The “two strains” info may have come directly or indirectly from this report describing the genotyping of a Brazilian sample which turned out to be more closely related to European than Chinese samples.

NotTerfNorCis · 01/03/2020 12:50

If the Pope is recovering, at his age, it's probably just a cold.

Pppppickupapenguin · 01/03/2020 12:51

I've packed a rucksack with toiletries and clean underwear to keep in my car boot as I work in an NHS hospital. I'm assuming there will come a time where it may be difficult to get home (or the risk to my family is too great for me to go home).

SistemaAddict · 01/03/2020 12:51

I've just read dds high school student bulletin. No mention whatsoever of the importance of hygiene or of coronavirus. Dd says some have been to Italy skiing in half term too.

I've asked another parent about the school trip and he basically told me as long as people are vigilant then no one will get ill but if they do become ill they'll be sent home straight away Confused

Anothernamechange2020 · 01/03/2020 12:52

Just seen on sky news that the coronavirus has cleared levels of pollution in China. NASA have issued images of the difference. An interesting point...

NemophilistRebel · 01/03/2020 12:52

This is impressive though
