This video from lovely Dr John Campbell, is very informative and in part reassuring he has suggested a lower CFR of 1% based on the figures he is constantly analysing

Here is a link to Worldometer Map for live updates

I wonder if the time has come, that people with any type of flu/cold will take time off work or stay home from school

I wonder if the time has come for salaries to be paid during sickness instead of measly smp.
like it's the case in many countries. well even in the us many people get sick pay for a number of days a year.

gladysinthepicture · 29/02/2020 09:48

so our current rainy yuck weather is like a corona`s holibobs lol!

well I only drink hot tea.....so thats the warm water thing I suppose!

dingit · 29/02/2020 09:49

Watersheep no worse than some other sources. And you wouldn't come to any harm followed any of that advice 🤷‍♂️

Porcupineinwaiting · 29/02/2020 09:51

@dingit that is not what is said on the news. Only 5% of coronavirus patients develop a sore throat. It's not a reliable symptom at all.

dingit · 29/02/2020 09:51

So goodbye to a nice G&t Sad

PicsInRed · 29/02/2020 09:51

That Facebook post doesn't seem completely accurate.

PicsInRed · 29/02/2020 09:52

Drinking warm water is cultural rather than medical.

ofwarren · 29/02/2020 09:55

So many inaccuracies in that Facebook post. Coronaviruses can last for up to 9 days on surfaces.
Singapore is hot at the moment and they have cases.
The virus isn't only in the respiratory tract, it's in the gut. You can get positive tests from anal swabs.

dingit · 29/02/2020 09:55

I didn't say it was, just sharing. And for what it's worth, I don't think health officials can be completely sure either?

Please don't jump down my throat. I wish there was a way to remove posts, as I would now. So much for a friendly thread.

Fucket · 29/02/2020 09:56

I think if this thing gets worse, unless you are working in public health, the emergency services, military, local government essential services, the odd supermarket deemed to be that areas designated food distribution point, utilities or can work from home, you will not be working. No one will be going shopping for anything other than food, no eating out, no social gatherings, the arts, tourism, leisure, retail industry will stop. Those with children in these industries will be able to self-isolate Because they won’t be working.

Perhaps individual schools will choose whether to open or not. Allowing those who work in public health to send their children there. Maybe one or two schools combine in an area.

There maybe a time when some, probably younger and fitter teachers will have had this virus and survived and hopefully be immune and could teach. Or they may not feel the risk to them is that great.

Just saying it’s too late now and giving up is fatalistic, if any proposed measures now stem the tide a little, and save even 100 lives then so be it.

People are probably going to lose income, but that is national/international I think there may have to be some recognition that rent/mortgages are going to have to be suspended until this has passed, for those unable to work. Same with utilities.

If we have any chance of coming out of this as a thriving economy we must take measures to prevent mass infection and mass bankruptcies and somehow get the economy to pick up where it left off. We will have to pay higher taxes to compensate but so be it.

We have to learn to be less selfish and follow the example of citizens in China who are doing all they can to stop this (and its working). Ok with less heavy-handedness but there is something to learn from them about putting national interest above personal gain.

What is happening in the US, is mind blowing but their health system is woeful and I’m glad my relatives moved back here to the UK last year.

EmmaBridgewater20 · 29/02/2020 09:56

@magicrainbowbeans we had the discussion last night. We know a couple of people whose hand hygiene are pretty shocking - they turn up with some sort of pestilence every time we see them and give it me and DC, so we’re going to stop seeing them for a while.

I posted on the previous thread, my Mum’s an air hostess - we’re pretty worried.

I don’t think I’ll do any activity centres or soft play (which I hate anyway) for the foreseeable. DH travels by train a lot so he’s seeing what meetings he can do via FaceTime and planning to drive for essential ones.

I’m wondering about the gym also, nights are lighter so will probably run outside now.

I am going to the hairdressers next week would normally park at a big John Lewis and go shopping - I’ll park on the road nearby and avoid the town centre.

magicrainbowbeans · 29/02/2020 09:58

This virus is like a pedophile with the looks and charm of George Clooney. my favourite on this thread so far Grin

@keepmoving

With reference to the question about aerosols produced in nhs procedures, it is many years since I worked in a hospital lab, but there was discussion then about some equipment, such as centrifuges, producing aerosols.

Wow threads are filling up quickly. Reply to this on the last page of the last thread:

HasA do you know what if certain aerosol-generating procedures are conducted in health care facilities refers to?

All dental procedures are aerosol-generating. Drills whizzing around very fast in a pool of saliva sending up spray.

I'm sure there are others.

lljkk · 29/02/2020 09:58

Gargling with salt water as protection measure has been refuted.

Someone may overdo it & give themselves salt poisoning, so it's not without potential harm to recommend the gargling.

I thought that how long viruses stayed viable when on metal surfaces depended on a lot of factors, like temperature, light levels, humidity & type of metal.

teta · 29/02/2020 09:59

Corona virus has been shown to survive up to 20 days on non porous surfaces, less on porous. This is why the Chinese are disinfecting or removing old notes.
Dh's Chinese company are currently working out how to disinfect their equipment before wrapping it and sending overseas via Air freight.
Do not believe a thing posted in Facebook, Twitter, Reddit etc

Intubation generates aerosol production and is thought to be one of the reasons why so many healthcare staff became ill in China. As they were dealing with severe cases of Pneumonia without adequate protection.

peridito · 29/02/2020 10:04

@dingit Flowers most of us are friendly ,some have a bark that's louder than their bark .Don't let it get to you .

PS If you really want you can report your own post and MN will remove it for you .Personally I'd leave it as I think the discussion around it is helpful in explaining why it's not v good advice .

DominicCummingsForehead · 29/02/2020 10:05

@EmmaBridgewater20 are your dc in school?

CoCoPops55 · 29/02/2020 10:05

Just checking in, will catch on the threads later when I have more time.

ofwarren · 29/02/2020 10:07

I'd only seen evidence from other coronaviruses suggesting 9 days @teta. Do you have a link about it possibly being 20 days? That is terrifying! What would be the implications for people who are well but self isolating due to having a positive diagnosis?
I know we aren't doing that yet, but that will happen in the future I expect.
If it's 20 days, the chance of them reinfecting themselves must be high!

ofwarren · 29/02/2020 10:08

Iran reports 205 new cases of coronavirus and 9 new deaths, raising total to 593 cases and 43 dead t.co/eUoE2b20hL

Bearing in mind, the death toll is said to be a lie as the BBC found out it's over 210

keepmoving · 29/02/2020 10:08

@motorina that makes sense. So does that mean in a normal day to day setting that the WHO findings show that it is not airbourne?

slartibarti · 29/02/2020 10:08

Looking at the world map of confirmed cases I’m really struck by Indonesia have none

Some "experts" have said the virus could become less active when the weather gets warmer. If this is true then there'll currently be less infections in hot countries, or those having their summer now.
Another possibility is people aren't being tested/diagnosed so there's no record of them having it.

teta · 29/02/2020 10:10

Sorry @Dingit I'm not getting at you.I know you from past threads and you've always been lovely . Just there's so much misinformation around and it's so difficult to know what's true.
