This video from lovely Dr John Campbell, is very informative and in part reassuring he has suggested a lower CFR of 1% based on the figures he is constantly analysing

Is that going to be voluntary or conscripted?

I'm a part time HCP (due to having a young child) and wondering at what point they could force me to work additional hours above my contracted hours.

I think they have already said they will suspend working times directives, but staff can already choose to work inexcess of WTD anyway, so not going to make much difference unless they force people to work extra hours. Suspension of WTF would screw us over in terms of the short meal breaks we currently get, and the protected 11 hours between shifts.

littlemissmuffins · 29/02/2020 22:39

PicsInRed Well frontline workers needed for the essentials (supermarket deliveries, healthcare, carers, gas, truckers) should be provided with full PPE for minimising the risk to them then.

Not talking about Universal Credit payment, that's bad enough as it is, but setting up a system of payments so coughing Ill people aren't turning up to work spreading it because they have no choice. Government have plenty of money for other shit (bungs to DUP, HS2 rail).

Not trying to make this party political btw, we've no idea how other parties would cope with this. But the government are NOT doing enough, they are asleep at the wheel when the WHO is stating we are at the end of our chance to contain this.

Wehttam · 29/02/2020 22:40

Margot smug? I have a fucking family as well you know! You think I’m relishing the fact my aunt with cancer is risking her life every time she goes to fucking Asda?! There is no excitement in my posts so read into all you like, the reality is we are ALL in this together.

ofwarren · 29/02/2020 22:41

@wehttam I'm not even trying to persuade anyone any more. I'm just looking out for me, my husband and my kids.
I've been trying to get my mum, who's diabetic to get a few bits in, make sure she has her prescriptions etc and she's actually just started ignoring my messages. She said, "there is nothing we can do". Well I don't accept that.
I'm not spending the first year of my son's life in hospital, doing everything we could for him to survive, my husband donating a piece of his own liver to him so that we can just sit back and go, "ah well, there is nothing we can do". Fuck that.
I'm locking down and waiting this fucker out.

GorkyMcPorky · 29/02/2020 22:41

So those of us who are being conscripted under the government's 'battle plans' - we can't work from home and our DCs will just have to continue mixing in school. Don't think so.

littlemissmuffins · 29/02/2020 22:42

Yes to our government fully choosing economy. It's awful that more is not being done.

Hoping the same as you.

ChipotleBlessing · 29/02/2020 22:43

I guess the only way retired healthcare professionals could be used is if they did the non-coronavirus stuff to free up other staff. Still can’t see there being a huge number. People retire or leave the profession for a reason. And it’s not like the army where you sign up to be called up if necessary, even after you leave.

goose1964 · 29/02/2020 22:43

There was a discussion on an international website earlier today about how poorly India is equipped to deal with this, and obviously we have a lot of population transfer with India. Does anyone know whether the pneumonia vaccination on the NHS is any good against COVID19?

ghostlycurtains · 29/02/2020 22:43

Mojo I see it as burying heads in the sand of an hourglass. It’s infuriating but as you said, they have access to the same information as we do.

This is so patronising. Maybe you have time to follow every bloody #covid2019 update on twitter but most people are getting on with their lives. Your hyperbole on this thread has been nothing but distracting tbh, from your self satisfied "just you wait" doommongering to claiming Italy is "completely infected". Most people are seeing it for what it is, a nasty flu like virus that can be devastating for a small minority.

apricotnuts · 29/02/2020 22:44

I think maybe it is time to call it what it is: Covid-19 is 'viral pneumonia

Is that for all cases? I have just read the following -‘the vast majority of confirmed cases are considered mild, involving mostly cold-like symptoms to mild pneumonia. Fourteen percent of confirmed cases have been “severe,” involving serious pneumonia and shortness of breath. Another 5 percent of patients confirmed to have the disease developed respiratory failure, septic shock, and/or multi-organ failure—what the agency calls “critical cases” potentially resulting in death. Roughly 2.3 percent of confirmed cases did result in death.’ Regarding the 2.3 % death rate, I think since this was written WHO are now saying as they have got more data that the overall CFR (crude fatality ratio) is around 0.7%.

The latest WHO report says ‘Approximately 80% of laboratory confirmed patients have had mild to moderate disease, which includes non-pneumonia and pneumonia cases’.

ofwarren · 29/02/2020 22:44

It's not goose. That's for bacterial pneumonia. This is viral.

myrtleWilson · 29/02/2020 22:44

@Wehttam actually many of your posts have come across as smug and entitled - I think you said to me something along the lines of "I'm okay (financially)" So many of us have asked you repeatedly to think about the way in which you post but you choose not to.

SonjaMorgan · 29/02/2020 22:45

I have been following this from the outset. Lots of issues with facts getting through, especially early on. Unfortunately with an incubation period with a range of 1-27 days (going on reports) I believe it has been decided that it will be impossible to stop the spread. The NHS has been underfunded for the last 10 years and struggles daily. Luckily for most people symptoms should be manageable and I think the government should be advising most people how to manage this at home. This would free up beds in hospital for those who will face complications.

Wehttam · 29/02/2020 22:45

Ofwarren keep on doing what you are doing. Do what YOU feel is necessary to protect your family. We tried convincing DPs parents to take the news seriously, we mentioned it at the end of Jan and ever since it’s a brick wall. FIL thinks it’s a hoax anyway and the warm weather will put a stop to it. 🙄 Fine, he’s a heavy smoker over 60 so good luck with that.

wheresmymojo · 29/02/2020 22:46

The pneumonia vaccine is for bacterial pneumonia.

COVID causes viral pneumonia so it wouldn't stop you from catching COVID or developing viral pneumonia.

However in some cases of viral pneumonia, patients get a secondary bacterial infection so it could help with that.

In summary: It won't help very much, if at all

SansaSnark · 29/02/2020 22:46

The pneumonia vaccine is for bacterial pneumonia AFAIK, so it would only offer protection against secondary infections.

BigChocFrenzy · 29/02/2020 22:48

goose There won't be a vaccination against COVID-19 for 12-18 months

iirc, that NHS vaccination is against bacterial pneumonia, whereas of course the pneumonia that some get from COVID-19 is viral

Balkinfly · 29/02/2020 22:48

I think we look ridiculous atm all other countries have addressed the country and advised in a reassuring and official way. We get Boris's love child as our announcement? It's embarrassing.

I have had to self isolate my own child as PHE has not really taken this seriously so far.

Newjez · 29/02/2020 22:50

Fantastic battle plan.

Get Corona virus done. Brilliant.

Is bojo going to act out a scene from love actually to sell it to the public?

jasjas1973 · 29/02/2020 22:50

As i said in my earlier post, the UK authorities are treating this as little more than influenza, yet it would also appear (from other countries) that it is far worse than that, even Trump banned flights from China, by comparison our PM is more interested in knocking up his latest GF.

As for the NHS being ready? jeez my DD has just done two placements within the NHS and she is completely shocked at the lack of resource for anything at all, let alone a major health issue, God help us if this really is a serious pandemic.... however we have all voted for this state of affairs, so we are ultimately to blame.

PicsInRed · 29/02/2020 22:50

There is no system set up to just set up a "system of payments". There would need to be utilisation of an existing payment pathway and it would be slooooow.

Essential services. What about ATM and card payment technicians to keep payments working at point of sale? What about vehicle garage workers? Petrol station attendants? Plumbers? Electricians? IT? Online shopping customer support? Port workers? Canteen staff who feed them? Bus, taxi, ferry, train staff? Cleaners? Bin men? Linesman? Call centres? Insurance? How about the bank workers who complete manual processes to ensure payments are made? Payroll workers who ensure wages are paid? Essential services is such an enormous group of jobs when you think though the complexity of our society as to become almost meaningless.

Dennisreynoldsduster · 29/02/2020 22:51

Is there a link to that @apricotnuts?

TreesSandSea · 29/02/2020 22:53

I didn’t vote for it

Wehttam · 29/02/2020 22:54

Myrtle it’s not entitled it’s the reality, I am ok moneywise, many others here are OK, a lot of others here however are absolutely not ok and are completely unable to prep or bulk buy and will no doubt be worried about the what ifs.

I sent close family members money to prep themselves does this make me a bad person?

Wehttam · 29/02/2020 22:56

None of us voted for this and arguing about politics will be a road to nowhere.
