This video from lovely Dr John Campbell, is very informative and in part reassuring he has suggested a lower CFR of 1% based on the figures he is constantly analysing

The Hertfordshire case is a nurse in Watford I’ve been told.

Will wait to see if that’s true tomorrow

ofwarren · 29/02/2020 22:21

The most pathetic, insipid battle plan ever.
Surely they could have come up with better than that?

TreesSandSea · 29/02/2020 22:21

Eugh. That is NOT a battle plan.

Wehttam · 29/02/2020 22:21

Agreed mojo

cherrytreeblossom · 29/02/2020 22:21

I met a friend for coffee yesterday - she flew back from Vegas on Wednesday

She just sent me message saying My throat is really sore, Im wheezing and coughing, feel shattered and moaning a lot about it!

Cause for alarm ?

TreesSandSea · 29/02/2020 22:22

What the hell are they doing?

WaterSheep · 29/02/2020 22:23

What the hell are they doing?

The bare minimum.

Wehttam · 29/02/2020 22:24

It reads like they have no clue what to do. But in the pictures they’ve rolled up their shirt sleeves so they’re clearly getting the job done. 🙄

littlemissmuffins · 29/02/2020 22:24

They should be looking to shut schools (until spread slows anyway), they should be looking at mitigating loss of earnings for those who need to quarantine or look after Children and leave work.

Money over people as usual.

wheresmymojo · 29/02/2020 22:24

@cherrytreeblossom

The risk is still pretty low - there's no known (I do stress known) community cluster in Las Vegas.

It's statistically more likely at this stage to be any number of other viruses/colds doing the rounds.

Even if it were cause for concern there's nothing you or she could do differently anyway as the NHS can't test every person with cold symptoms

WitchDoc · 29/02/2020 22:26

The problem with this thread is you have those who have been following it since the news broke on the internet, those who have been following it since it broke on the main stream news & those who have just woken up.

wheresmymojo · 29/02/2020 22:27

If that genuinely is all that comes out of Govt when we enter an epidemic stage we may as well accept that they're basically comfortable with the UK having whatever the worst case scenario is.

I mean...not even cancellation of mass gatherings in a serious epidemic is actually ludicrous.

It would be laughable if it wasn't so serious.

Let's hope more comes out after Cobra and/or when we enter epidemic stage because otherwise it's actually negligent IMO

HairyFloppins · 29/02/2020 22:28

Most people who come back from Vegas come back ill with something or other.

Wehttam · 29/02/2020 22:28

Interesting to see the emergency registering of retired medical staff, nothing screams understaffed NHS more

littlemissmuffins · 29/02/2020 22:28

They should be putting more money into the NHS to prepare. More ICU beds. Stockpiling masks and antivirals which have helped in China.

They should be rolling out a massive media campaign telling people to wash hands and stay away from coughing people.

They should be ordering big gatherings or events to close.

Wtf are they doing?? Their response is pitiful.

Could be anything.

How? A Universal Credit payment receivable in 6 weeks?

And to spend where? The local supermarket which is closed because staff are home with the kids? And which has no stock anyway because the truckies had to look after their kids?

Our entire food supply and way of life (e.g central heating and pumped drinking water) relies upon people going to work.

wheresmymojo · 29/02/2020 22:31

Agreed @WitchDoc

I have read all of the medical papers, watched the WHO conferences, etc and am having to do a lot of biting my tongue for the sake of my own sanity...

I've stopped even debating with people in the 'it's only the flu' or 'it's not as bad as the flu' camp. I've come to the conclusion that the same information is available to them as is available to me if they wanted to actually go and read it (or even the summaries I've put on previous threads) and if they can't be bothered it's not my job to educate people who don't want to hear actual facts.

littlemissmuffins · 29/02/2020 22:31

Completely agree. Negligence.

VivaLeBeaver · 29/02/2020 22:33

emergency registration of health professionals who have retired

Is that going to be voluntary or conscripted?

Are the usual rules are having to do a return to practice course if out of practice (nursing) for 3 years to be lifted?

ofwarren · 29/02/2020 22:33

Actually dreading the 2pm report tomorrow.
I bet it's a big number because they are only reporting once a day.

Wehttam · 29/02/2020 22:34

Littlemiss They probably have the beds on order count on that, this is just what they want the public to know. The average Joe Bloggs family reading that list will see the message as nothing to be worried about. That’s what those measures are, a minimising appeasement for the time being until they figure out the true scope.

MargotB7 · 29/02/2020 22:35

Wehtttam is really quite strange. There is an odd sense of excitement to all their posts.

I agree, I'm not seeing it as just flu but this person seems to be quite smug we are all going to die.

Wehttam · 29/02/2020 22:36

Mojo I see it as burying heads in the sand of an hourglass. It’s infuriating but as you said, they have access to the same information as we do.

wheresmymojo · 29/02/2020 22:38

Fundamentally there is a decision to make:

Economy vs. Lives

China chose lives.

So far our Govt appear to be fully choosing economy.

Some of the other European countries are trying to strike a balance - so banning mass gatherings, closing schools in the most impacted areas to delay spreading, putting some areas into semi-lockdown.

I honestly thought that even the right wing Govt we had would at least try to strike some kind of balance but so far it appears it's 100% economy over lives.

I hope Sky are wrong and more measures get announced when we reach the epidemic stage and will try to retain my somewhat feeble belief in authorities enough to expect this to happen.
