This video from lovely Dr John Campbell, is very informative and in part reassuring he has suggested a lower CFR of 1% based on the figures he is constantly analysing

I think maybe it is time to call it what it is: Covid-19 is 'viral pneumonia'.

THIS

uwas · 29/02/2020 22:06

@Albatross I only ever read Mumsnet before. It is frustrating if you try to talk in real life no one cares

WaterSheep · 29/02/2020 22:06

Water what model are you going off?

No specific model, just thinking logically. The end of next week is 14 days since half term. Given the huge surge in cases across Europe, I expect our case number to rise as more people begin to show symptoms.

Wehttam · 29/02/2020 22:07

Nazanins family must be utterly distraught. Terribly sad scenario

SansaSnark · 29/02/2020 22:09

If the Iranian authorities wanted to disappear Nazanin, now would be the time to do it.

NotTerfNorCis · 29/02/2020 22:10

Do we know what caused the huge number of cases in Italy?

I saw one doctor say it was purely because they do more tests. But it seems that most of the new cases in countries like the UK and Switzerland are in people coming back from Iran, China or Italy.

Wehttam · 29/02/2020 22:10

is viral pneumonia not inflammatory language Gorky? Where’s the pitchforks for this assumption?!

(I do agree btw Albatross but shhhhh)

ChipotleBlessing · 29/02/2020 22:10

Matthew is very clearly a man who enjoys trying to frighten women. Luckily everyone here can see through this.

ofwarren · 29/02/2020 22:10

From Tulip Siddiq

Update on Nazanin: I’ve spoken to her husband Richard who is my constituent. He is very shaken & says Nazanin‘s whole family are terrified for her safety. He’s asked me to raise it urgently in Parliament on Monday which I’ll be doing. Please keep them in your thoughts #freenazanin

LinesmanMinnelli · 29/02/2020 22:10

*Wehttam

Thank you Somerville you sound delightful, should I report her?

And it is Whettam thank you very much.*

Err no it isn’t Hmm

GorkyMcPorky · 29/02/2020 22:11

No, viral pneumonia is what it is. You've embarrassed yourself, now please give it a rest.

Wehttam · 29/02/2020 22:13

Chipotle you are very wrong but I apologis if you feel this way. There is no bogeyman in my contribution as I am sure a large number of people here will agree.

ChipotleBlessing · 29/02/2020 22:13

The genome sequencing theory showing links between the early German cases and the Italian ones suggests that it may have been circulating since 28th January in Italy. This may not be the case though, it may be that the patient zero in each area had picked it up in the same area of China.

uwas · 29/02/2020 22:14

did anyone else get that redirect page

ghostlycurtains · 29/02/2020 22:14

Wehtttam is really quite strange. There is an odd sense of excitement to all their posts.

wheresmymojo · 29/02/2020 22:15

According to Sky part of the Govts master plan is:

"Emergency registration of health professionals who have retired"

Not sure I can see a queue for this given the combined risk profile of being a health worker and being 60+

wheresmymojo · 29/02/2020 22:15

Sky article:

Boris Johnson announces coronavirus 'battleplan' as three more cases confirmed news.sky.com/story/boris-johnson-announces-coronavirus-battleplan-as-three-more-cases-confirmed-11946362

myrtleWilson · 29/02/2020 22:16

@wehttam - whatever you think you're adding to the thread, surely your self awareness now would suggest you re-evaluate the way in which your contributions are being received. If you choose not to do that, then many of us will perhaps consider this being yet another example of a man talking over women.

Parker231 · 29/02/2020 22:17

Sky News:

The battleplan says that, should the virus become an epidemic in the UK, the following could happen:

Emergency registration of health professionals who have retired

Emergency indemnity coverage for health care workers to provide care or diagnostic services

Relaxation of rules around staff to pupil ratios in education and childcare settings.

Wehttam · 29/02/2020 22:17

Nervous excitement maybe? Certainly NOT excited about what we are seeing unfold.

EmmaBridgewater20 · 29/02/2020 22:18

Agree @WaterSheep DH and I were just saying same thing, it’s been half term break isn’t it, it’s ski season lots of people have been away and we’re still to close to see the effect of that yet given the potential long incubation period.

Wilmalovescake · 29/02/2020 22:18

Albatross, “viral pneumonia”, by definition, has to be caused by a virus. And viruses have names.

Pneumonia is essentially a (horrible) symptom that’s got its own name. That’s not how we use it, of course, it’s a diagnosis in itself. But it’s caused BY something.

littlemissmuffins · 29/02/2020 22:18

Yes to calling it what it is - viral pneumonia.

It's now been proven that this new coronavirus SARS-2 has 'insertions' related to HIV and Ebola. This is apparently what is allowing it to spread better than SARS-1.

This would back up what has been said about it laying dormant. HIV persists in the body and Ebola is detectable for a good while after. I hope that the antivirals they are using in China (ones against HIV and Ebola which helped somewhat) are being stockpiled here. The government seems to be really slow in doing anything, it's so frustrating. They could be doing so much more.

I am reading and re reading the WHO report from China published yesterday, as it is somewhat reassuring. However I am really hoping the virus hasn't mutated.

Wehttam · 29/02/2020 22:19

Consider me gagged. 😷

wheresmymojo · 29/02/2020 22:19

If that's a battleplan it's not a winning one.

Unless they come up with stronger plans than that then I'm continuing to expect much higher numbers of both cases and deaths here than China.
