This video from lovely Dr John Campbell, is very informative and in part reassuring he has suggested a lower CFR of 1% based on the figures he is constantly analysing

Here is a link to Worldometer Map for live updates

I don't think people close to me are taking this serious. One relative has been told to self isolate after coming back from a risky area yet another relative has gone today to visit them and come back and visited our elderly granddad. I mean?? How do you get it through to people that this is serious especially for an elderly person? Person in isolation has been alone for almost a week and showing no signs so other relative felt sorry for them and thought a visit would cheer her up.

WhyNotMe40 · 29/02/2020 20:18

I wish they would close the schools so I can keep my own children at home safe, and also not risk myself by teaching! But I also know many families where it would just cause chaos- both parents HCPs or police or even shop workers and bin collectors- we all still need our bins emptied, and be able to buy food, have doctors and ambulance personnel etc

HasaDigaEebowai · 29/02/2020 20:18

I'm not sure thats right about Italy's stats. Is there a source for that?
They've said they're going to stop testing people who are not displaying symptoms. They haven't said they're not including positive testing but asymptomatic people in the figures.

Quartz2208 · 29/02/2020 20:18

I think that Iranian MP had underlying issues though due to chemical warfare from the Gulf Wars.

We cannot underestimate the effect that could have on the figures there

WhyNotMe40 · 29/02/2020 20:20

And it's all very well telling people to wash hands - well when you have. 3 year old who bloody licks random railings and sucks their thumb all the time after touching stuff...
Well short of house arrest we're fucked anyway!

LangClegsInSpace · 29/02/2020 20:20

I don't believe that Vietnam had 16 cases and they all just got better.

Link for hartlepool case here. He apparently went into school with a sore throat Hmm so he's likely spread it to others.

I really think sending students back to school after returning from Italian ski trips was a mistake, and I think we'll see the results of this next week.

Jenasaurus · 29/02/2020 20:22

It was in the video posted by wheresmymojo copied it below for you

Not sure how accurate the information in the video is.

Person in isolation has been alone for almost a week and showing no signs so other relative felt sorry for them and thought a visit would cheer her up.

Makes a mockery of those who are doing the right thing. With attitudes like this you have to wonder what the point of isolation is.

SansaSnark · 29/02/2020 20:23

I'm a bit skeptical about Vietnam too- but they have reacted very strongly- they have quarentined towns and all schools are still shut. I do think the spread there is low, but it's possible people aren't going to be tested as they don't want to be on lockdown.

Shakermaker8 · 29/02/2020 20:24

I think they are deliberately keeping the full extent of this quiet. Won’t take much for people to start panic buying.

WaterSheep · 29/02/2020 20:24

"I rang 111 and they said not to worry if he hasn't got a temperature or his symptoms don't persist any further."

So many mixed messages.

HasaDigaEebowai · 29/02/2020 20:25

Italy announced on Feb. 26 that it would relax its testing criteria to the point that contacts linked to confirmed cases or recent travelers to outbreak areas would not be tested anymore, unless they show symptoms.

this is what worldometers says about Italy's reporting

uwas · 29/02/2020 20:25

growing number of discharged coronavirus patients in China and elsewhere are testing positive after recovering, sometimes weeks after
are being infected again' virus also could be "biphasic", meaning it lies dormant
reuters new york times

also if cases are underreported are ICU admissions underreported

WhyNotMe40 · 29/02/2020 20:27

Gloucestershire case is from the Cotswolds

Supposedly this boy has tested positive.

brainfogg · 29/02/2020 20:28

I may be being dumb but isn’t panic buying what they’d want? People spending lots of money, possible on stuff they might not need ‘just in case’. Surely that’s preferable for an economy-driven government.

ofwarren · 29/02/2020 20:31

Washington State Governor Jay Inslee declares state of emergency due to coronavirus

Spacecadetagain · 29/02/2020 20:32

I live in the Cotswolds and am very concerned about the Cotswolds case as the local high school closed on Monday for a week and is being deep cleaned after a pupil returned from Italy and complained of feeling ill after returning to school . I’m wondering if this pupil is the Cotswolds case . DDs primary school friends have siblings at that high school

SansaSnark · 29/02/2020 20:34

I guess the issue with panic buying is if there are supply chain issues caused by stuff coming from China.

However, I actually think the government is more concerned about economic disruption if lots of people stay home from work, and therefore businesses have to close (or alternatively, businesses closing as a precaution, and people not getting paid). I think they're concerned if they start closing schools etc, then some businesses would follow and that would have a knock on effect on the economy.

I also think the NHS couldn't really cope with lots of worried well turning up at doctor's surgeries etc.

They're probably worried about hitting the tourism sector if more people start cancelling holidays AND people perhaps decide not to come to the UK.

That's the cynical view.

It's also possible they don't have a clue and they're making things up as they go along.

WaterSheep · 29/02/2020 20:34

the local high school closed on Monday for a week and is being deep cleaned

I'm surprised we haven't hard about this before now, a school closed for a week for a deep clean is big news.
