This video from lovely Dr John Campbell, is very informative and in part reassuring he has suggested a lower CFR of 1% based on the figures he is constantly analysing

Here is a link to Worldometer Map for live updates

A colleague flew into to Milan last week and said he was tested at the airport for coronavirus. On his return to the UK - nothing. Allowed on the plane and to walk straight back out among the British people with no testing???

LarkDescending · 29/02/2020 19:30

Epidemic/pandemic coverage is usually an add-on at best, not covered under a basic policy of travel insurance.

You may well find that in current circumstances such an add-on is not made available to those taking out new policies.

Dusty01 · 29/02/2020 19:31

Yes. My dad said exactly the same. He flew to and from Milan too.

wheresmymojo · 29/02/2020 19:33

I really recommend watching this video to give an idea of the kind of interventions we might expect.

It is focused on the US and CDC pandemic prepping guidance but we should see similar here (there are only so many ways of dealing with a pandemic after all).

The arrow below is a useful picture to share with friends and family of the 'it's only the flu' persuasion.

It ranks potential pandemics from Cat 1 (less severe) to Cat 5 (most severe). Seasonal flu is Cat 1....COVID is Cat 4 if you're optimistic that the case fatality ratio will come down a bit from where it is currently and Cat 5 if you aren't....

Just in case anyone is wondering I haven’t name changed on this post. I’ve spent a day out and about with lots of people .... pretending it’s not hsppening

HasaDigaEebowai · 29/02/2020 19:36

I think the temperature tested from Milan depends what airport you fly into. DCs school have had two trips returning from milan into manchester and they were apparently all tested.

wheresmymojo · 29/02/2020 19:36

This is also interesting...

There are a number of countries that have a high level of Chinese tourists and which depend on tourism to a significant extent that seem to have a strange lack of cases.

Thailand, Cambodia, Philippines, Indonesia, etc

For Thailand he mapped the cases of "viral pneumonia" reported and ended up with the graph below.

There's no other reason viral pneumonia would be peaking like that now...

yesuwasrude · 29/02/2020 19:40

that's good, that will be acceptable for the news

ofwarren · 29/02/2020 19:46

Luxembourg reports first case of coronavirus t.co/eUoE2b20hL

WhyNotMe40 · 29/02/2020 19:50

I wish I knew where the new cases were a bit more precisely..
We've had lots of kids and teachers self isolating following half term ski trips or similar near me in one of those counties - including the school I teach at!
I do wonder if EYFS- KS3 will have voluntary absences and maybe if staffing allows, let teacher with children of their own absence to look after them... Might reduce the school child super spreader effect a bit

SansaSnark · 29/02/2020 19:55

That graph in Thailand is concerning.

I think it's pretty clear the USA have already lost control of the outbreak- someone needs to do a similar graph for viral pneumonia there soon. If people are facing huge unexpected bills for testing, a lot won't get tested.

ofwarren · 29/02/2020 19:55

I know whynotme
My father in law is in Gloucestershire and he's nearly 80 with a heart condition.
It's a disgrace that we aren't told.

AvocadoOwl · 29/02/2020 19:56

That Thailand map is pretty conclusive, wow. I'm shocked and not at all surprised at the same time.

WaterSheep · 29/02/2020 19:59

That Thailand graph is damning. Yet they claim to only have 42 cases. Hmm

ifonly4 · 29/02/2020 20:03

DH just told me if we get many more cases in our county, he won't be using the bus. That means I can't have the car - not complaining as I probably won't want to be too far away from home.

Have to say I'm not too happy about having to work tomorrow, we get a lot of people in coughing over us/clearly running a temperature asking us where products are.

SansaSnark · 29/02/2020 20:04

What do we think about only 10 serious cases in S. Korea? That seems v. low compared to other countries? It's only just higher than France who have a fraction of the cases they do.

ofwarren · 29/02/2020 20:04

#ITALY— Comprehensive list #Coronavirus:

615 Lombardia
217 Emilia-Romagna
191 Veneto
42 Liguria
13 Campania
11 Piemonte
11 Toscana
11 Marche
6 Lazio
4 Sicilia
3 Puglia
2 Abruzzo
1 Calabria
1 Provincia autonoma di Bolzano

PotholeParadise · 29/02/2020 20:05

First case reported in the province where I was this week. Frell.

Jenasaurus · 29/02/2020 20:05

Also Italy are not counting positive results for those who are asymptomatic according to that video, they are followed home and told to self isolate but not included in the stats. They estimate about 50% more people have tested positive but as are not showing symptoms are not included in the stats, this will lead to a higher CFR rate as we are not seeing the true picture.

#CANADA- Ontario reports 3 new confirmed cases of #coronavirus, bringing the number of confirmed cases in the province to 11

WaterSheep · 29/02/2020 20:10

Also Italy are not counting positive results for those who are asymptomatic

I would love to know the reasoning behind this. Surely they can't ignore positive cases just because they aren't showing symptoms. Shock They're still contagious, and the next person they infect might not be lucky enough to show minimal / no symptoms.

purplepjamas · 29/02/2020 20:12

Why the hell is BoJo getting wed and sprouting another sprog the headline news on my sky app?

Come on people! Hmm

Jenasaurus · 29/02/2020 20:14

I believe they are isolating them or getting them to isolate at home but not including them in the statistics, it seems all countries have a different method of reporting watersheep

NEW: U.S. CDC confirms 3 new presumptive cases of coronavirus in Washington state, including 1 person who died. One of the other patients is a health care worker.

wheresmymojo · 29/02/2020 20:16

The independent are reporting the Iranian MP with Coronavirus has died.

This is another big potential knock on impact in society.

It's easy for people to dismiss 'the elderly' but the risk starts increasing from 50-60+

Think how many MPs, CEOs, senior managers and other positions of power are filled by people 50-60+
