This video from lovely Dr John Campbell, is very informative and in part reassuring he has suggested a lower CFR of 1% based on the figures he is constantly analysing

I really appreciate this thread. There are obviously some teachers on here too.
Has anyone else taught their class how to handwash properly? I have and have seen mine put it into action.
A boy I know said his teacher has taught them to sing 'happy birthday to me' twice over (for correct timing) and demonstrated the correct washing actions to me.
I'm sure many of us are trying. It's a tough call. I don't know how it would work with 60 in the class. I know that many of us would be willing, but practically, it could be quite dangerous.

Motorina That made me cry. What an incredible team of people.

Absolutely sickening that Johnson felt it was appropriate to announce that engagement and pregnancy at the moment.

I was cynically wondering if they timed the announcement for a time when they had a lot they wanted to distract from. Coronavirus response being one thing, Priti Patel basically being accused of being a lying bully is another.

Statement from King County Public Health in Washington state, confirming multiple new cases of coronavirus, including 1 death. Press briefing at 1 p.m. PT t.co/7RHMJthOUM

PotholeParadise · 29/02/2020 18:07

The bubonic plague killed 1/3 of the population and yet that went away in a time far less experience than ours and society went on. Spanish Flu may have killed 3-6% of the World Population after WW1 and we still went on. Society didnt change. It wont here

Actually, society didn't just go on after the black death. The population loss ended feudalism, as the serf classes had been so diminished. From peasants being at their lords' tender mercies, it became a seller's market as the lords competed with each other to get peasants' labour. The lords had to compete with eachother to pay wages and then higher wages to keep labourers. So, economically, very, very different.

If the Black Death hadn't happened, the UK of today might look very different.

It does seem like a distraction...on the other hand, given the date, I can’t help but wonder if she proposed to him!!! Hmm

I don't suppose it is possible to block a user so I don't have to read the ridiculous and extremely rude fictional drivel that a certain poster insists on spouting?

FourTeaFallOut · 29/02/2020 18:08

Fucking GrinGrin at the thought that countries around the globe have been accidentally chasing the common garden variety coronavirus around the world and tanking the stock market for sport. Grin

Thank you Pothole

Plantherd · 29/02/2020 18:09

How do I speak with a family member who is adamant it is just like the flu and its no concern because the death rates for the flu aren't reported like this and they are much higher..

Currently with them and would really like to come with some facts. They also plan to fly to Washington next week for a holiday.

IveGotBillsTheyreMultiplying · 29/02/2020 18:09

If they aren't testing here except for people with known contact or travel history, why was this new case tested? He doesn't fit the current criteria for testing, esp a few days ago when the test would have been done.

I find it odd that it is said not to worry as home spread cases aren't occurring, if they aren't being looked for?

Or have I got that wrong?

wherearemychickens · 29/02/2020 18:11

I think they've started more general testing / screening now in a few places around the country?

WaterSheep · 29/02/2020 18:12

If they aren't testing here except for people with known contact or travel history, why was this new case tested?

100 GPS and 11 hospitals are testing all patients who present with specific symptoms, it's part of a pilot.

usernameishistory · 29/02/2020 18:12

Its 'like' flu in as much as its a virus, much like bubonic plague, or any other virus would be a virus!!

Also, its unrelated to the flu as viruses go. Its not a type of flu.

Thats enough to show them they are not working on the facts.

AvocadoOwl · 29/02/2020 18:13

Made me smile too @FourTeaFallOut but your post here made me lol! 'Common garden variety' 🤣

LarkDescending · 29/02/2020 18:13

Case 20 was tested because there is a scheme running at a sample of healthcare settings to test everyone who presents with flu-like symptoms for Covid-19. It is intended to give PHE a more realistic idea of how much of it is out there.

Boris Johnson's partner expecting first child and they are to be married.

And?

It's not like Johnson hasn't been married twice before and an unknown number of children already... It should be a walk in the park for him with all his previous experience.

FelicityFebruary · 29/02/2020 18:16

Parker that is a post too far.

You are obnoxious.

Motorina · 29/02/2020 18:17

@LarkDescending and it found an unsuspected case. That rather adds water to the theory that the cases we know about might be the tip of an iceberg.

(One story on BBC news suggested it was now taking 7-10 days to get results back. So not only is there at least one case which, but for the pilot, would not be picked up under current testing criteria, the results we do have are a week or more out of date. This isn't good.)

VivaLeBeaver · 29/02/2020 18:17

It’s rather worrying then that for every Case there will Be a good few more wondering about totally oblivious. Iirc it was a very small number of surgeries that the more comprehensive testing was being done at.

Errands calling, ladies I will be back later 🚗

Your going out?? Shock

Sakura7 · 29/02/2020 18:18

@Plantherd We know how to deal with the flu, and we have vaccinations to protect us. The mortality rate for flu is 0.1%.

We don't yet understand Covid19 and we have no vaccine. It appears that people can become reinfected after recovering, so there's no immunity being built up. The mortality rate is at least 3% (30 times higher than flu) with a further 10-15% requiring hospitalization.

janemaster · 29/02/2020 18:20

@Ephe17 I know, how will we cope?
