This video from lovely Dr John Campbell, is very informative and in part reassuring he has suggested a lower CFR of 1% based on the figures he is constantly analysing

Here is a link to Worldometer Map for live updates

Where I have worked, for 10 years, every year (I’m a nurse) we see hoardes and hoardes of people tested for and diagnosed with Corona virus - it’s absolutely nothing new to me.

I understand this is a new strain but all these hundreds of people who are being tested and coming back positive for corona virus, are the results specifying whether they are actually testing for this new strain or just Corona virus in general?

You're really a nurse?

janemaster · 29/02/2020 17:35

@Greendayz states declaring a state of emergency is rather routine in the US. Basically it triggers extra federal funds and assistance. I wouldn’t read too much into it at the moment.

Logically that cannot be true, otherwise States would do it all the time to get extra resources. There must be some actual criteria.

WaterSheep · 29/02/2020 17:36

AnyOldSpartabix That definitely makes more sense.

BirdieFriendBadge · 29/02/2020 17:36

Have to admit the Surrey case finally made me take some action. (Also in Surrey)

Did a BIG shop today and stocked up extra with painkillers/tins/loo roll/cat food/long life milk/flour etc.

I feel part relieved and part like an idiot.

But it's all stuff we'll use anyway.

I think we're only a few days away from quite a few more cases here in the UK and some more extreme government measures. (Like Frances cancellation of big gatherings.)

^ I don't think the scientists are really that stupid QueenofmyPrinces

Parker231 · 29/02/2020 17:38

@usernameishistory - I do have dependents but I also have a job which requires me to travel with this week being SF.

I don’t have the luxury of sitting at home worrying about what may or may not happen.

LarkDescending · 29/02/2020 17:40

Off topic - there’s another Johnson on the way Shock

lets hope this is true

WaterSheep · 29/02/2020 17:44

Off topic - there’s another Johnson on the way

Goes some way to explain his absence.

NotJustACigar · 29/02/2020 17:45

Absolutely sickening that Johnson felt it was appropriate to announce that engagement and pregnancy at the moment. He should be focused on the general public at a time like this, not himself. Does he honestly think anyone actually cares?

babychange12 · 29/02/2020 17:45

@DonkeyKong2019 Indonesia employs the tactic of ... "no testing = no cases"

AvocadoOwl · 29/02/2020 17:48

I thought that initially but then considered that the timing is only going to get worse so perhaps they are getting the announcement out of the way before the SHTF.

PotholeParadise · 29/02/2020 17:50

Whilst I wash hands frequently, I am going overboard now, and have red raw paws now.

Anyone recommend a really good hand cream/antidote to this please?

Body Shop hemp hand cream. It's amazing.

saltinesandcoffeecups · 29/02/2020 17:50

@janemaster

Yes there is criteria and by routine I meant relatively speaking. It’s used mostly for things like storms with high dollar values attached to it. So yes it’s not a weekly or even monthly occurrence, but happens often enough that it doesn’t indicate an end of days scenario much less indicate that it’s not business as usual for the vast majority of citizens.

Here’s a decent article explaining a little more of the current one in cities in California. www.cnn.com/2020/02/26/health/san-francisco-coronavirus-emergency-declaration/index.html

Ciwirocks · 29/02/2020 17:51

Does the 105 serious/ critical in Italy really mean intensive care support? I.e ventilation or do they admit more patients to intensive care in Italy? There is no way this country could deal with an extra 100 people needing ICU

Anothernamechange2020 · 29/02/2020 17:51

Totally unrelated but not.
Boris Johnson's partner expecting first child and they are to be married.
Quite a lot to be going on with right there...

usernameishistory · 29/02/2020 17:52

I don’t have the luxury of sitting at home worrying about what may or may not happen.

Thats really rude and dismissive Parker

If people worry its not a 'luxury' jeez!

If people can't risk being quarantined, then they can't.

Many are making measured decisions where a novel virus is spreading, and choosing to minimise its spread or risk of infection to them.

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 29/02/2020 17:54

Nettle that's interesting (does anyone remember Israel showing everyone how it should be done in World War Z - the book of course, not the very disappointing film with Brad Pitt singlehandedly saving everyone on the planet whilst adopting orphans Hmm)

Anothernamechange2020 · 29/02/2020 17:55

@LarkDescending I hadn't seen you'd posted that, sorry.
It's not really off topic I don't think.

RedToothBrush · 29/02/2020 17:55

Serious cases don't need a ventilator by definition. Some extra oxygen yes.

Critical is where you are into needing ventilation.

Motorina · 29/02/2020 17:56

This is sobering watching: twitter.com/CGTNOfficial/status/1232606230360797185

ofwarren · 29/02/2020 17:56

UPDATE: #Italy media now reports 1128 cases of #Coronavirus #COVID

LarkDescending · 29/02/2020 17:56

There’s a rather poignant story in the Guardian’s live feed (17:27) about a Wuhan football team who arrived in Spain for pre-season training and haven’t been able to go home.

They have been invited to attend the Real Madrid-Barcelona match at the Bernabeu tomorrow. Let’s hope they don’t experience unintended consequences of mingling in the large crowd there.

ofwarren · 29/02/2020 17:57

USA- First death from Coronavirus in #washington state.

LarkDescending · 29/02/2020 17:59

Wow. A US death already. That is huge.
