This video from lovely Dr John Campbell, is very informative and in part reassuring he has suggested a lower CFR of 1% based on the figures he is constantly analysing

I think the situation in the US is really concerning. If they aren't testing people AND there have already been 3 cases with no travel history then what's to stop them ending up with Iran levels of infection in a matter of weeks?

HasaDigaEebowai · 29/02/2020 16:07

I wish China had peaked at 80k (that would have probably been mid January though) unfortunately it’s a catastrophe there.

Wettham you have absolutely no evidence for that statement. You are just scaremongering now. I understand you're clearly scared but making stuff up helps nobody and quite frankly is dangerous too since there are vulnerable people frequenting these threads. So far this thread and the prepping one have been fairly calm and rational places to get information. Please stop diluting the effectiveness of that information by spouting random shite. This isn't a Hollywood movie - this is people's lives.

This is a serious and emerging situation where the picture is changing rapidly and it can be difficult for people to keep up. We don't need you rewriting history.

RedToothBrush · 29/02/2020 16:12

What's to stop them ending up with Iran levels of infection in a matter of weeks?

How would we know if that were already the case?

Americans without insurance don't go to the doctors as they fear financial ruin as much as they fear the virus.

If someone dies and they aren't testing how will they know what they have died of?

Who is keep a record of an unexpected rise in respiratory failure deaths in the US either nationally or by state?

The Trump administration doesn't want to admit a problem. They are as authoritarian in their desire to cover up or deny a problem as any tin pot dictator state.

We are unlikely to detect cases originating in the US in Europe now, because we have so many other cases. We are looking for cases from Italy, South Korea, Japan, China, Iran, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar. But not the US. So no one will know if a case has originated from the US.

It'll just be a case from an 'unknown source'.

Orchidflower1 · 29/02/2020 16:14

Anyone else feel @Wehttam has name changed from another goady poster? Next post I’m reporting - there’s odd and Then there is downright inflammatory.

WaterSheep · 29/02/2020 16:15

If they aren't testing people AND there have already been 3 cases with no travel history then what's to stop them ending up with Iran levels of infection in a matter of weeks?

To be fair if they aren't able to test with any sufficient breadth, yet already have 3 confirmed cases with no travel history. Then it's very likely they're in the same situation as Iran and Italy right now, they just can't confirm it due to the lack of testing.

AvocadoOwl · 29/02/2020 16:16

Indeed @RedToothBrush.

Newjez · 29/02/2020 16:16

@amd4578

70% doesn't seem unreasonable. Most people catch several colds a year. One of those colds will be CV19. If you survive pneumonia one year, will you survive it the next, and the next, and the next?

If this becomes entrenched with no vaccine, we will have a lot less old people.

Deathraystare · 29/02/2020 16:25

I thought the current advice for people coming in from northern Italy was that you should only self isolate if you had symptoms, or if you had come from one of the towns locked down? Venice hasn't been locked down to my knowledge.

We got info from GOV UK.. That area is category 1 - in lockdown. We can only go by what they say. Ok not stopping them flying out from Italy but that MAY mean passing it on once here.

TheVanguardSix · 29/02/2020 16:29

what's to stop them (US) ending up with Iran levels of infection in a matter of weeks?

The irony is that, undeniably, US sanctions against a now economically crushed Iran play a fair role in Iran's ability (or inability) to handle its own level of infection. It would be wrong to pin the blame on the US entirely, but Iran has been in such a bad state for some time and the sanctions have totally affected access to/supply of meds/medical equipment and the necessary means to contain the virus. There are, of course, other factors at play here in the way Iran is handling the crisis. But US sanctions have crippled the country, bringing it to its knees, and now they have an epidemic to contend with. The difference with the US is that it does have the means, the meds, the hospital beds, the equipment... they've got it all. But if you, Citizen John Doe, don't have the money to pay your way on the American Express, you're screwed. Coronavirus testing, in the States, will be denied to so many who won't be able to afford, not so much the test- that will be free, I believe, but the trip to A&E and other tests will most likely be paid out of pocket for the majority of Americans. It's not the test itself but the costly 'bundle package' that Americans will incur at the hospital. I don't know. It could end up being more streamlined than it is at present. At present, it's a mess.
At its core, the US is discriminatory. And that will show itself in the US government's handling of this crisis.
Look at how Hurricane Katrina was handled.
Puerto Rico.
Flint, Michigan.
A few examples of what happens when you can't afford the help 'available' to you.
This is not some pro-Iran/anti-US rant here. It's just interesting to see how two countries, so opposite, could actually have a similar outcome to the coronavirus crisis. Could. But let's see what happens. I could be talking out of my backside... and probably am. Grin

Venice is not in lockdown. The only advice relating to Venice is that if you have symptoms you should self isolate and call 111. It absolutely does not say on Gov.uk that Venice is in lockdown.

Wehttam · 29/02/2020 16:30

Orchid hun I can assure you I’m not who you suspect. Though I am relieved I am not alone in trying to cast another viewpoint. Is that reportable?

I’m not being inflammatory I am being realistic, there is an awful lot of downplaying in this thread, often refuted by others so I am not the only one who notices it. If you can prove otherwise then please, I’m all eyes.

As for the Book of Mormon persona, you are 10000% correct about the severity and rapidly evolving situation we are facing. Diving head first into an hourglass is going to help no one I am afraid.

HasaDigaEebowai · 29/02/2020 16:30

sorry bold fail there^

DominicCummingsForehead · 29/02/2020 16:32

FFS, I've just had a 'Specialist Paramedic' on Facebook telling me that because this virus is in the same group as sars and MERS it "won't get past that." and trying to tell me I'm an idiot for worrying because "most people will be absolutely fine"

HasaDigaEebowai · 29/02/2020 16:33

Wehttam is that me you're accusing of having my head in the sand? Presumably so given the Book of Mormon reference. Those who know me would piss themselves laughing at that. I am certainly not burying my head in the sand about this. I am prepped and following extremely closely. I am in no way downplaying the severity.

However you're stating bollocks opinion as if it's fact. Just stick to the facts and we'll all get along fine.

EmmaBridgewater20 · 29/02/2020 16:33

When I they going to start clamping down on travel from locations with the highest no of cases - Iran, Italy and Asia by my reckoning and stop banging on about increasing class sizes!!

GorkyMcPorky · 29/02/2020 16:33

Trump thinks the media is fearmongering to topple him. Total egotist Hmm

NORWAY- Oslo University Hospital: 50 of our employees were quarantined for 14 days for fear of being infected with the #Coronavirus

teta · 29/02/2020 16:34

I've reported a certain post. It's the equivalent of a crazy looking madman on a soapbox screeching " the world is doomed - repent ...for the world is doomed" .

Jenasaurus · 29/02/2020 16:35

This patients experience is a little more reassuring

I'm pretty sure Wehttam and Tunbridge are different people. Tunbridge is extremely anxious but is simply scared rather than deliberately scaremongering and making stuff up.

WaterSheep · 29/02/2020 16:36

Were, or are currently being? Norway only announced their first case 6 days ago. (26th Feb)

Wehttam · 29/02/2020 16:37

I am not accusing you of that at all, quite the contrary, I think we are both thinking along the very same lines.

MargotB7 · 29/02/2020 16:38

Wehttam
So annoying when you keep calling people "hun" and "kiddo"

Wehttam · 29/02/2020 16:39

Sorry Margot x
