This video from lovely Dr John Campbell, is very informative and in part reassuring he has suggested a lower CFR of 1% based on the figures he is constantly analysing

So are we expecting any other UK updates today? Or do we have to wait until 2pm tomorrow?

ofwarren · 29/02/2020 15:33

3 more cases of #Coronavirus in #Lebanon

Parker231 · 29/02/2020 15:33

If the 23 UK cases, how many have now left hospital?

peridito · 29/02/2020 15:34

Assume wait till 2pm on Sunday .

First community spread in UK........

YoursTunbridgeWells · 29/02/2020 15:35

Wehttam · 29/02/2020 15:37

Hi my alleged alter ego 👋🏼

wobblywindows · 29/02/2020 15:38

I'm not sure I can catch up- I'm only on page 10 atm. But I thought I'd add this for ppl to consider for GCSE revision. See Aircom Physics GCSE on amazon. Maths, Chemistry & Biology also available. Whole course content + questions + mock tests. Needs a cd drive on a pc. We used it and its brilliant. Of course if the govt wanted to be really helpful they'd make this available as a download (are they listening here or should I suggest it on twitter?)

Wehttam · 29/02/2020 15:38

I’m sure they’re here....

cocodomingo · 29/02/2020 15:39

@Parker231 there will be other circulating viruses in addition to coronavirus. If the pp feels suitably unwell to need medical attention and NHS 111 are not interested then what action do you suggest she takes?

It will be negligence and deeply unfortunate but preventable at this early stage in UK, to see patients die because they sat home under what are emerging public health instructions...I witnessed the same confusion with swine flu in a&e, children with croup but swine flu symptoms were left in isolation when they needed urgent attention.

However, I would advice anyone going to hospital/urgent care/ gp with symptoms but no travel history to be kind enough to wear a makeshift mask if they dont have one -to protect healthcare workers and members of public.

Bessica1970 · 29/02/2020 15:40

Parker231 Eight people in the Uk have recovered, so 15 active cases

ofwarren · 29/02/2020 15:41

6th case Of #Coronavirus in #Croatia

Gronky · 29/02/2020 15:43

Regarding the death rate: bear in mind that the novelty of the organism will bias the recorded rate to a higher level. In other words, there's potentially a lot of people who caught it but weren't unwell enough to justify either a visit to healthcare professionals or testing by healthcare professionals when presenting.

peoplepleaser1 · 29/02/2020 15:44

@cocodomingo please don't imply a makeshift mask will protect people in a healthcare setting. They do very little, and once damp can it actually increase the rate of spread according to virologists.

I totally sympathise with the poster feeling worried and frightened about their symptoms but turning up at A&E is a really bad idea.

Jenasaurus · 29/02/2020 15:45

In John Campbells latest video this morning he sites 20 Cases in the uk and 1 dead. Now I know the total of cases has gone to 23 so presume his video was before the update but haven't got information about the 1 death, unless he is implying the one from the Diamond Princess in Japan, but he states those figures separately. I know the GP from Surrey isn't included on the cases and wondered if there is a connection. John Capmbell has very accurate information so I am a little converned some of the information isn't being recorded accurately on the live maps.

I think it’s much more likely random YouTube man is wrong rather than PHE. They’ve only got 23 cases to keep track of, it’s not like they’d have missed a death.

FelicityFebruary · 29/02/2020 15:48

So I read on this thread that France have halted gatherings of more than 5000. As of when?

I have wondered why all our massive Saturday football crowds have been allowed to travel and gather.

Just all out of patience with government response.

ChipotleBlessing · 29/02/2020 15:49

That poor woman, it’s awful what she’s been through.

ofwarren · 29/02/2020 15:50

I'm sorry, it's says "feared to" according to her husband

ofwarren · 29/02/2020 15:50

#France: Ministry of Health: 73 cases of #coronavirus have been recorded to date, 12 patients have recovered and 2 have died.

Parker231 · 29/02/2020 15:52

@Bessica1970 - thank you. That’s good news.

AvocadoOwl · 29/02/2020 15:52

For goodness sake don't walk into a hospital if you think you have Coronavirus, masked or otherwise 🤦‍♀️

If you are so ill that you need urgent medical attention (as opposed to wanting to be tested for piece of mind) then you need to make it clear to 111 that you need a doctor and they should arrange out of hours care/advice the same as they would at any other time. If they feel you are a Coronavirus risk they'll deal with you accordingly.

Mittens030869 · 29/02/2020 15:54

I have self isolated for the last week as per advice for those who have flu symptoms. I tried calling NHS 111, but they really won't test unless you've either been to an infected area or had direct contact with someone known to have it. (But how are we supposed to know? Especially since there's a 14 day incubation period?). I just ended up being considered to be having excessive anxiety, as I have MH issues. (Admittedly, I was a bit stressed.)

It's very short-sighted and not only about me, my DH and DDs will be going to work and school and potentially infecting more people.

It's hopefully going to turn out to be just a seasonal virus, which I'm prone to catching.

I think that if it was summer time, the reaction would have been different, as the seasonal viruses aren't around then.

Thank you for the kind words.

Testing for COVID-19 is not yet available in New York City....

www.propublica.org/article/cdc-coronavirus-covid-19-test/amp?__twitter_impression=true

In New York, scientists at both the city’s and state’s laboratories have seen false positives even when following the CDC’s latest directions, according to a person familiar with their discussions.

“Testing for coronavirus is not available yet in New York City,” city Department of Health spokeswoman Stephanie Buhle said in an email late Thursday. “The kits that were sent to us have demonstrated performance issues and cannot be relied upon to provide an accurate result.”

Until the middle of this week, only the CDC and the six state labs — in Illinois, Idaho, Tennessee, California, Nevada and Nebraska — were testing patients for the virus, according to Peter Kyriacopoulos, APHL’s senior director of public policy. Now, as many more state and local labs are in the process of setting up the testing kits, this capacity is expected to increase rapidly.

So far, the United States has had only 15 confirmed cases, a dozen of them travel-related, according to the CDC. An additional 45 confirmed cases involve people returning to the U.S. having gotten sick abroad. But many public health experts and officials believe that without wider testing the true number of infected Americans remains hidden.

The stats did say 20 and 1 death. It's the DP man.
