This video from lovely Dr John Campbell, is very informative and in part reassuring he has suggested a lower CFR of 1% based on the figures he is constantly analysing

Here is a link to Worldometer Map for live updates

Isn’t the article titled ‘ to hell and back, my three weeks with Coronavirus’ so not 5 days..

Just because he didn’t die and he fully recovered doesn’t mean that he only had a mild illness. It doesn’t sound mild.

I’m questioning why we keep hearing that it’s like a mild cold for most when the accounts we are hearing don’t sound mild to me.

Willowashen · 29/02/2020 14:48

Anyone reckon numbers will double by next week?

If they only double then we’ll be lucky. I think we’ll be in 3 figures by then.

NaturalBornWoman · 29/02/2020 14:49

I wish they would be at least a bit more forthcoming. One of those is my county, but I don't have any idea if it's my town. I plan to hunker down at some point and wfh but it's not possible at the moment to know when it's time and by the time they tell us it's potentially too late.

SansaSnark · 29/02/2020 14:50

This virus has been spreading for 46 days now, and in that time period it has infected at least 80,000 people and has killed almost 3000 people. For comparison, 2009 Swine Flu infected around 20,000 during it's first 46 days, and had killed just over 100 people.

Swine flu spread a lot faster in the UK than coronavirus, for whatever reason, but the death toll and spread worldwide of the coronavirus shows it's far more serious than swine flu.

Mittens030869 · 29/02/2020 14:51

@PotholeParadise I wouldn't have worried about it at all in the past, as I was fit and healthy and didn't have my DDs. But my feelings have changed since developing pneumonia last year and having CFS.

It's also not exactly an impossibility that my DH or I (or our DDs) could have picked up the infection on public transport or at our church, where there are about 500 in attendance on Sunday mornings, with attendees from a lot of different countries.

I just want the temperature to come down so I can put this out of my mind. I have 2 adopted DDs with attachment issues who need me.

Coronavirus fears at UK hotel as guest 'self quarantines in room after Thailand trip'

The man is believed to have recently returned from a trip to Thailand, but has spent the last three days at the Radisson Blu in Liverpool's city centre

tryingtoprep · 29/02/2020 14:58

That's interesting RedToothBrush about possible different strains. If true, that might explain why the Chinese patient is, so far as we know, the only patient in the UK to have not had a quick recovery?

Am I being unreasonable in thinking that if Boris wants us to continue as normal, with no lockdowns like Italy, he should lead by example? Why isn't he in London instead of hiding away in Chevening?

I agree we should have transparency. The government works for us. We pay their salaries. They are public servants.

Wehttam · 29/02/2020 15:01

You’re looking for transparency in a muddy puddle, it ain’t happening kiddo.

amd4578 · 29/02/2020 15:03

Ok i know im going to get totally flamed for this so please do not feel the need to reply as i will not be going on any of these types of threads anymore..

To anyone that suffers from anxiety etc my advice would just be to carry on as normal until PHE give any information otherwise and alos remove yourselves from these threads as scaremongering will not help you. Please also understand that any predicted figures that you see will always be worse case scenarios. The worst we could see are a few areas of the country locked downs for a few weeks and maybe the stopping of mass gatherings.

A delegate from the WHO has stated they believe the virus has PEAKED in china at around 80000 cases so less that 0.01 % of the population there. now i know they used much stronger tactics than most governments would but when you read that 70% of the uk could get infected, that is just utter nonsense... HOWEVER they have to publish the worst case scenario, which for this to happen would pretty much need everyone to be spitting on our hands and then shaking everyone hand that you walk past.

Since Brexit half the country has been waiting for something that the government can screw up so they have started slating them for doing a bad job when there is not really much evidence that they have done much wrong so far.

I am all for people wanting to be prepared but the origional thread was am i being unreasonable to be worried? the answer for me is it depends what you are being worried about? if its that the world will get wiped out or millions will die in the uk alone then no you should not be worried?

Deathraystare · 29/02/2020 15:07

Well we've just had someone rock up at reception to see her daughter. She has come from Venice. They were presumably let in the country. We have cordoned off an area where she is now and will have to make arrangements for where she can stay and when her daughter can go back home to Venice as well.

usernameishistory · 29/02/2020 15:11

I certainly haven't been waiting for the govt to screw up Grin

I certainly see and hear what BJ says, and what he does Confused

I don't see clarity. Our govt control via less overt means. There is legislation in place apparently, but noone knows, for instance, if Mittens et al have it now and we are all mixing.

Sorry to hear you are still unwell Mittens and have the added worry of your adopted dependents who need you so much.

I think it's worth mentioning that you mix regularly and closely, with an international community, to see the if that alters things, as you could have been exposed from what you say.

Mind you, many who contract it will have no idea where it came from, how can they?

All the evidence is running so far behind the spread of the virus.

Wehttam · 29/02/2020 15:15

Amd4578 I wish China had peaked at 80k (that would have probably been mid January though) unfortunately it’s a catastrophe there.

Burying your head in the sand may bring short term relief. The shock when the scale of what is coming hits you will rack your nerves to shreads, when all the sand falls through that hourglass...

EgonSpengler2020 · 29/02/2020 15:17

I think the reason for the perceived lack of information being released, is that with very small numbers of patients it is very difficult to release much detail without risking breeching patient confidentiality. At one point the only active case on the UK was the Chinese lady in London, hypothetically if she was seriously or critically ill (a rumour I have heard) and this was listed against the UK data, it would be obviously about her. If she was ventilated she is in no position to consent to this information being released, and it could be very upsetting for anyone who knows she's is infected but isn't her immediate next of kin to read this information in the press.

I imagine once numbers are higher, location and condition data will be more forthcoming.

It is really important to respect confidentially in situations like these as you don't want people hiding symptoms so as not to be diagnosed and potentially identified.

Abraid2 · 29/02/2020 15:17

Why isn't he in London instead of hiding away in Chevening?

He was visiting Kettering General hospital last night.

AvocadoOwl · 29/02/2020 15:18

Well we've just had someone rock up at reception to see her daughter. She has come from Venice. They were presumably let in the country. We have cordoned off an area where she is now and will have to make arrangements for where she can stay and when her daughter can go back home to Venice as well.

I thought the current advice for people coming in from northern Italy was that you should only self isolate if you had symptoms, or if you had come from one of the towns locked down? Venice hasn't been locked down to my knowledge.

usernameishistory · 29/02/2020 15:19

We don't know the extent of the virus and its effects in China, do we, not really.

You've only got to look at what happened to the poor young doctor who tried to tell everyone right at the start. Everything was shut down, removed, deleted, didn't happen. They also literally closed vast swathes of china. Tested, tested, tested and challenged all movements. The streets were empty.

Are the streets full again now, or are they all dead? I am joking of course, in poor taste, but seriously, how would we know whats really going on there.

tallah · 29/02/2020 15:21

@amd4578 just popping on to spout a load of shit hey- "but don't bother replying coz I just give my (wrong) opinion but don't like others to have one in response!" Prick

cocodomingo · 29/02/2020 15:21

@Mittens030869 you will qualify for testing as your symptoms will mean they will test for flu and if that's excluded covid19 will be tested for too. However they cannot bring you in for testing with out presuming that you could have Covid19...atleast proper infection control procedures would suggest that. Call NHS 111 and state that your symptoms, if you had flu jab etc and your concern that you may have the virus. If they say you dont meet criteria. Go in to hospital anyway? Fear should not prevent you accessing health

Parker231 · 29/02/2020 15:23

Do not go to hospital if you have symptoms - ring 111 and follow NHS advice.

Ecuador reports first case of coronavirus t.co/eUoE2b20hL

ChipotleBlessing · 29/02/2020 15:25

@Deathraystare unless your reception is a hospital unit for ill patients and the woman is coughing and sweating you’ve basically just unfairly racially profiled someone. Ridiculous.

ChipotleBlessing · 29/02/2020 15:29

@Delatron did you read the article? He describes there being five days when he felt really bad. At the start of the three weeks in the headline he was still attending university!

GorkyMcPorky · 29/02/2020 15:29

when you read that 70% of the uk could get infected, that is just utter nonsense...

@amd4578, care to cite your evidence? I don't think Imperial experts would agree with you.

peridito · 29/02/2020 15:30

Haselemere case www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-51683428

The latest patient diagnosed with the coronavirus in England is the first to catch it in the UK.

Confirming the latest UK case, England's chief medical officer Prof Chris Whitty said the man had been transferred to a specialist NHS infection centre at Guy's and St Thomas' Hospital in central London.

He was a patient at Haslemere Health Centre in Surrey which has been closed for "deep cleaning" since Friday morning.

Prof Whitty said the case was being investigated and contact tracing has begun.

The Department of Health and Social Care said the virus was passed on in the UK but the original source was "unclear" and there was no "immediately identifiable link" to overseas travel.
