This video from lovely Dr John Campbell, is very informative and in part reassuring he has suggested a lower CFR of 1% based on the figures he is constantly analysing

Here is a link to Worldometer Map for live updates

New coronavirus cases, 2 recently returned from Italy, and one from Asia: twitter.com/DHSCgovuk/status/1233754536856125441

These aren't cases of community transmission- which suggests there might still be more cases to announce soon, or the Surrey GP is fine.

NettleTea · 29/02/2020 14:20

I am guessing nothing is showing up in Turkey or Syria at the moment as they have other things on their mind.
Just thinking that a war zone and areas chocka full of refugee camps isnt going to be a good scenario.
Also how the hell is Russia only having 1 case....

RedToothBrush · 29/02/2020 14:20

2pm weekdays or 2pm everyday. Given that Johnson doesn't do meetings at weekends and the English chief medical officer only seems to clock in at 9am?

Just caught this snippet on this more general article:
www.euroweeklynews.com/2020/02/29/coronavirus-super-spreader-thought-to-be-on-the-loose-in-spain/amp/?__twitter_impression=true

Scientists from Brazil and the United Kingdom have managed to sequence the coronavirus genome detected in a 61-year-old Brazilian in just 48 hours, the only case confirmed to date in the South American country. They discovered that the virus detected in the Brazilian patient, who is isolated at home and is in a stable condition, has a greater genetic similarity to the cases detected in Europe.

That suggests the virus is slightly different in China, Iran (and cases that have come from Iran) and Italy (and cases that have come from Italy). It is therefore possible one is more virulent than another.

It is interesting that they have been able to distinguish a European strain though.

PotholeParadise Same for me, except that I've had a fever of around 38 for the last 9 days and a dry cough. But because I haven't been to an infected area or had direct contact with anyone who has tested positive the 111 handlers didn't want to know. It's probably just a normal winter virus, but it's showing no signs of abating. In addition, I have Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and catch everything going. I also had flu that turned into pneumonia last year.

And my DH goes to work in Leeds city centre on public transport most weekdays (he works from home one day a week).

I'm sure there are a lot of people in my boat.

People are slating the governments response and i know they are different but with swine flu the uk had 100,000 cases within 3 months... it has been in the uk for around 3 weeks and we only have 23 confirmed cases. I do think they are doing the right thing to make sure people do not panic at the moment and im really not to sure what other people expect them to be doing?

ofwarren · 29/02/2020 14:22

People have already answered that question many times amd
I don't know why you keep asking

wellididntseethatcoming · 29/02/2020 14:23

Yikes

usernameishistory · 29/02/2020 14:27

amd just look at the trajectory of deaths and cases that are going on unabated.

RedToothBrush · 29/02/2020 14:30

a) swine flu was a lot less serious
b) they could work weekends for starters, like other countries... I could come up a list of small things that other countries are doing but we aren't. We are doing far less than other countries. Our contact tracing is slower than elsewhere. PHE are releasing less information about know cases than other places...

To put simply there is PLENTY we could be doing in the uk but we are not.

PotholeParadise · 29/02/2020 14:32

Mittens030869 yy. It's quite likely a normal virus, but if it isn't we would ideally identify it now. But I'm not eligible for testing.

Looking at the map, I don't find it implausible that I could have bumped into someone symptomless who bumped into someone who'd been to Italy in the next province over.

But I can't possibly justify keeping the kids off school for however many weeks without official sanction. If I called in to register their absence and said they weren't coming in because they'd been near me and I might have coronavirus because I have been in a country next door to Italy, they would go apeshit. I had to have a meeting with an EWO once, because I'd followed the fricking D&V guidelines, and they'd had time off for NHS appointments that were like golddust and only done during school hours.

anywinewilldonow · 29/02/2020 14:35

Why don't they realise that releasing more specific info about where the cases are will help slow the spread? Because people in those areas, out of fear, will naturally cut back on going out, meeting people etc

ofwarren · 29/02/2020 14:35

Totally agree anywine

Skyejuly · 29/02/2020 14:36

Anyone reckon numbers will double by next week?

OldQueen1969 · 29/02/2020 14:36

Been following these threads with interest over the last few days, and keeping up with the Guardian live feed.

I honestly don't know what to make of it all, beyond doing the obvious which is to do everything possible to prevent the risk of it spreading etc.

It's a very worrying scenario and a stark illustration of how a domino effect starts and seeps into every aspect of life when something out of human control happens...... Obviously health and well-being is the top priority, but the effect on the economy will also have an impact on health and well-being - I've been trying not to be worried, nor pay any attention to "conspiracy" theories and misinformation, but we are now planning to wang some dried and tinned foodstuffs into our cupboards just in case...... we live in strange and interesting times indeed :(

WaterSheep · 29/02/2020 14:37

Anyone reckon numbers will double by next week?

I said on the previous thread.

I predict 30 cases by the end of this week, and nearing 100 by the end of next.

ChipotleBlessing · 29/02/2020 14:37

I’m not sure why people think that Guardian article means it’s untrue young people only get it mildly. He had a bad cough and fever for five days and made a full recovery. He passed it to several family members, who also all recovered. Sounds perfectly in line with what we’ve been told about it.

ofwarren · 29/02/2020 14:41

I found this from 2 days ago, gif those of you from Hertfordshire. Obviously this isn't confirmation.

Rickmansworth School closed as two students reportedly being tested for coronavirus after returning from a skiing trip from Italy. Wishing all concerned well.

Wehttam · 29/02/2020 14:42

Numbers will double week on week for a while I suspect, that is until they realise the scope.

usernameishistory · 29/02/2020 14:42

They're not doing it, and they're not telling anyone why.

This is life under Boros Johnson, secrecy and lack of clarity lies

He can say the NHS is ready and preparsd for this, but its not.

You only have to ask any working in it to know there's a dearth of supplies, staff, hospital beds, specialist equipment.

How he can stand there and talk such bollcks is so reminscent of trump its scarey.

There should be a clear and open central source of scientifically gathered information for anyone to access thats worried.

It would negate the need for threads like this where thankfully there are links to scientific current data so people can make intelligent and reasoned decisions for themselves and their family.

ofwarren · 29/02/2020 14:44

Exactly. We wouldn't need a thread like this if the government were totally transparent.

RedToothBrush · 29/02/2020 14:44

Anyone reckon numbers will double by next week?

And the rest!!!

It'll be far more than double. If they have capacity to test.

We will hit 100 very quickly if we have one traceable confirmed case that has had a while to incubate.

Delatron · 29/02/2020 14:45

Agree that naming the county isn’t much help. Why can’t they name specific towns and locations? People could then adjust their behaviour in these areas if they wished and they would certainly be more careful.

usernameishistory · 29/02/2020 14:45

If the virus is different to the one in China, we may not have the same issues as them.

Why can't they take definitive steps to establish this rather than the 'time will tell' whether as many die approach?

Wehttam · 29/02/2020 14:45

Indeed. How the fuck did we fuck up so badly this last 4 years?

MrsMeg1 · 29/02/2020 14:46

@Mittens030869

Sorry you are not feeling any better.
I think I’d be inclined to embellish the truth a little in order to be tested. I know there’s lots going about but your symptoms sound suspicious. So many cases must be getting missed. Would they have notes on your first call?
