This video from lovely Dr John Campbell, is very informative and in part reassuring he has suggested a lower CFR of 1% based on the figures he is constantly analysing

www.theguardian.com/world/2020/feb/29/to-hell-and-back-my-three-weeks-suffering-from-coronavirus?

Interesting article from someone who has had the virus. It explains what it's like and the treatment they recieved. This is a 20yr old man and it sounds like he suffered badly. It's all well and good saying it only kills those who are vulnerable but we really need to be avoiding it at all costs. I'm bewildered by those claiming this is just like 'flu'.

ofwarren · 29/02/2020 13:31

Well done young plantherd! Good to teach them young.

WaterSheep · 29/02/2020 13:32

Plantherd We have no idea why PHE or other authorities haven't confirmed the case. They don't seem to have traced contacts before announcing other cases, so I can't see that being a reason for the delay this time.

usernameishistory · 29/02/2020 13:32

If one asymptomatic man can bring down 11 other people, what exactly is the route of infection.

Hes asymptomatic, so hes not coughing/sneezing as hes carrying and not suffering, has been at a conference, and at a busy ski resort, and home out and about, yet only 11 others infected.

Based on him alone, which is unscientific of course, but for every one case there will be 11 others, we just haven't seen them yet.

There must be a lot of resistance to it out there.

The death rates and infection rates are keeping on tue same trajectory, so as we know Trump is being disingenuous (being kind here).

The same trajectory will apply.to the states, and they don't have an equitable health care system, so many will not go to hospital amongst the lower income demographic. They would be refused treatment anyway because they don't have sufficient health insurance.

They also haven put any restrictions in place, have they?

Here, we are told nothing!

We know its spreading mostly before any symptoms are evident and through asymptomatic carriers, so that will be going on apace.

I am staying away from busy areas, using gloves, avoiding coughers, etc, and handwashing!

I don't want to spread anything or contract anything either, as I am recovering from flu

Quartz2208 · 29/02/2020 13:33

ExhaustedGrinch I read that as well its the anti HIV medicine

That said I had swine flu - 2 weeks of hell and it took 6 weeks to start feeling normal (eating properly etc) and around 6 months to get back completely to normal

peridito · 29/02/2020 13:35

Thank you Lark and Water !

Here’s some recent news from South Korea....

Health officials in Daegu have apparently tested about 1900 members of the Shincheonji Church, which suffered an outbreak of coronavirus this month.

Ms Bicker has reported that 1300 of those tested showed symptoms for the virus, while 600 did not.

The findings apparently showed 70 per cent of those people without symptoms tested positive for the virus – suggesting the number of asymptomatic cases could be higher than previously thought.

woodencoffeetable · 29/02/2020 13:37

I had swine flu too.
totally symptomless.
dh was ill, bed bound for a week and dc had a fever and cough but was otherwise well...

amd4578 · 29/02/2020 13:41

@ExhaustedGrinch Its because for most people NOT ALL but most people it will just be like normal flu. you cannot base assumptions on an article from the media when all they want people to do is read their paper. It would not be quite as good of a story for them if they decided to do an article on someone different who just said... "oh yea i had a bit of a runny nose and a cough etc but feel much better now"

As much as the media can be a good source of information they still need to do whatever they can to make you read their articles over other papers!

Quartz2208 · 29/02/2020 13:42

woodencoffeetable DD never got it either. DH was slightly ill for a bit but me I was totally out of action for 2 weeks in bed, managed to see doctor twice but nothing they could do. It was awful the chest and rib pain made it difficult to breathe the halluncinations from the fever. I really never want to feel like that ever again. Even if I did lose 14 pounds

amd4578 · 29/02/2020 13:43

@mrshectic so surely although this would show it could spread easier, must be a positive sign for the death rate as the chances are millions of people could already have it even if they are symtomless but the death rate is still relatively low.

Mittens030869 · 29/02/2020 13:48

The difference with flu is that there is a vaccine available for elderly and vulnerable people, and anyone else who wants to protect themselves can pay to have it. With coronavirus this isn't the case.

ofwarren · 29/02/2020 13:48

#NORWAY- Oslo University Hospital is taking measures as there’s suspicion that #Coronavirus might be spreading on the premises. Everyone who visited ophthalmology at Ullevål Hospital between 24.02 / 28.02 to self quarantine. Dozens of employees being tested for #coronavirus.

NEW: France reports 16 new cases of coronavirus, raising total to 73 t.co/eUoE2b20hL

Dusty01 · 29/02/2020 13:53

ExhaustedGrinch - every one needs to read that account you posted.

I am now feeling worried but justifiably so.

Grinchlywords · 29/02/2020 13:53

.

NcFortuna · 29/02/2020 13:54

We keep hearing ‘oh the young won’t get it that bad’. I’m wondering if there are any stats for young 16-30 year old smokers. I’m just pondering really as I’ve read people stating that chinese males are more likely to smoke and that has skewed statistics. Well what about young smokers in this country? A lot do seem to smoke from my observation.

Number12 · 29/02/2020 13:58

Is anyone else wondering why the news has gone quiet...?

ofwarren · 29/02/2020 13:59

FRANCE has banned ALL public gatherings with over 5.000 people - health ministry

namechangemania · 29/02/2020 14:00

Love how all countries are taking precautions like banning public gatherings and over here BJ is just like “yeah we’ll get the weekend out of the way and have a meeting next week” Hmm

WaterSheep · 29/02/2020 14:02

I can't believe they're are people who are still doing the 'but x number of people die of the flu every year'. I literally just had a conversation with my usually very sensible mother in law along these lines. She has quite a number of health issues but she's being so blasé!

ofwarren · 29/02/2020 14:04

Gloucestershire, Hertfordshire and Berkshire

WaterSheep · 29/02/2020 14:05

23 positive.

So i'm guessing the GP, his wife and one other.
