This video from lovely Dr John Campbell, is very informative and in part reassuring he has suggested a lower CFR of 1% based on the figures he is constantly analysing

Sorry if this has already been posted but South Korea have reported 813 new cases- www.theguardian.com/world/live/2020/feb/29/coronavirus-live-updates-latest-news-china-wuhan-stock-markets-update

This seems like a tipping point for them as a country.

The number of cases in Germany also seems to be rising quite steadily- now at 79. It seems like the German government are starting to cancel some large events which seems like a good idea: www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-02-28/germany-steps-up-quarantines-to-contain-coronavirus-spread

Paddlinglikehell · 29/02/2020 12:32

We’re in London today - maybe not the brightest idea, but a long standing theatre trip.

It’s deserted! This is Oxford Street just before lunchtime, buses practically empty.

3rd case of #coronavirus reported in #Denmark. The Danish Patient Safety Agency states that the virus has been detected in a person who recently attended a conference in #Munich. It is believed that he was infected at the conference.

Wehttam · 29/02/2020 12:34

Avocado the ghost of a username you allude to is not me.

You believe the numbers coming out of China? 👀🤣

EmmaBridgewater20 · 29/02/2020 12:36

@Paddlinglikehell could be due to Kings Cross been completely closed too though. it’s for engineering works.

mrshectic · 29/02/2020 12:36

@EmmaBridgewater20 he is my brother, so I can tell you honestly those are indeed facts Shock shocking I know! He didn’t even know about these pods to get tested and when asked about it was declined.
And as for people saying it’s just a flu/cold bug....I think they’re foolish to think this won’t be a problem here.

mrshectic · 29/02/2020 12:37

It’s starts with the odd few cases... then exploded within days. It is quite frightening. Sad

BookMeOnTheSudExpress · 29/02/2020 12:39

Thank you for new thread.

FourTeaFallOut · 29/02/2020 12:40

But the interesting thing is considering there are now 3109 active cases in South Korea, is that only 10 people are severe/critical so they must be catching a lot of positive cases before they become very unwell, I hope this gives those patients a better outcome.

Dusty01 · 29/02/2020 12:43

Sorry - I've not read this thread or the news for 12 hours.

Is there now a worry that the coronavirus is just appearing - without having been transmitted from someone whose been abroad etc?

My dad has just been to Italy. There were no checks on the way back in. He was in an area where there was the outbreak, but not in one of the affected towns - 50 miles away from one, I think. He's saying he doesn't need to self isolate now because the virus is just appearing ...

I thought this was nonsense but looking quickly at the news - it seems this might be the case? What is going on?

Anothernamechange2020 · 29/02/2020 12:43

No facts in my post but an observation, we went to our local town today and my husband said, what's going on here, it's so busy. I said, it's Saturday morning shoppers and he responded with, well it was very busy yesterday too.
Often, we get into said town about 9.30 on a saturday for shopping and it's dead. It became very real when I saw all the soaps and paracetmols had nearly gone.

Wehttam · 29/02/2020 12:43

Paddlinglikehell enjoy the show, what you watching?

ofwarren · 29/02/2020 12:45

Yes Dusty we are seeing community transmission now

Wehttam · 29/02/2020 12:50

Italy is completely infected, US has essentially said do not go there, that alone speaks volumes.

ghostlycurtains · 29/02/2020 12:55

Probably cos of the weather.

BookMeOnTheSudExpress · 29/02/2020 12:57

They must have forgotten to tell those of us in Italy that we're all infected.

SansaSnark · 29/02/2020 12:58

Whilst I wouldn't travel to Northern Italy right now, I don't think the US have a clue what they're doing at all.

Parker231 · 29/02/2020 12:59

Italy is not completely infected - it’s only 11 towns out of 70,000. Scaremongering doesn’t help.

ghostlycurtains · 29/02/2020 12:59

COMPLETELY infected?? Sit down you're getting overexcited.

Snowdropdelight · 29/02/2020 13:01

Wehttam I agree we all need to be kinder together each other generally but please don't trivialise in law issues.
My in laws have greatly reduced my mental health and my quality of life until we went v low contact.

And I would be extremely reluctant to leave my dc with them now because they are the type who believe their own bodies have sanctity. They have happily used their own utensils to feed my dc whilst ill with strange virus's.

A friend in China said life is slowly getting back to the normal...

DonkeyKong2019 · 29/02/2020 13:01

The USA are a mess. I wouldn't be surprised if it's them that will have huge amounts of cases undetected

HasaDigaEebowai · 29/02/2020 13:04

No but neither does minimising. There are now hundreds of cases around the world with links to Italy but not those 11 towns. Including of course Italy itself where the cases are not linked to those towns.

amd4578 · 29/02/2020 13:05

"completely infected"

jesus christ some of the things people come out with here are crazy... Even in Hubei 0.14% of the population have become infected would you call that completely infected?

ofwarren · 29/02/2020 13:05

Do we think we will get our report on time today and do we think the 21st case will be added? The press have reported it but not the department of health.

SansaSnark · 29/02/2020 13:06

Even in China, it's only a small percentage of the total population infected.

Italy is a country of 60 million people, with less than 1000 infections. They've taken strong measures to isolate the towns with cases, and that shows they will act decisively to contain any further outbreaks.

Personally, I wouldn't travel to the area north of Pisa, because I wouldn't want to get caught up in the containment of new outbreaks, and I wouldn't want to cause concern when returning to work or potentially have to take 2 weeks off if I had a cold. I think the actual risk of catching coronavirus is still pretty low. However, I'd still quite happily travel to the rest of Italy! If I had a strong reason to go Northern Italy, then I would.
