This video from lovely Dr John Campbell, is very informative and in part reassuring he has suggested a lower CFR of 1% based on the figures he is constantly analysing

With regards to schools, I think they should (if possible) stay open but if a lot of staff are off, they'd need to prioritise learning for exam classes and supervision of children who have parents who are medical or emergency services. In our school a lot of kids have two parents are in essential professions - doctors married to other doctors / nurses for example.

Self isolation without pay just will not work. Most people can't afford a couple of weeks unpaid leave. And while it seems selfish for those people to go in to work, you can't really blame them if staying home would leave them unable to feed their children.

Quartz2208 · 29/02/2020 12:10

Wettham we have been through these things before though and come out the other side why should this be any different

teta · 29/02/2020 12:10

God @Wehttam are you enjoying the drama of all this?
This isn't the end of the world. Give up and stop frightening people.

cheninblanc · 29/02/2020 12:11

I've just read about Surrey being a hot spot. A gp is confirmed to have it but no announcement been made yet just the paper reporting it

Women awaiting results of coronavirus test

"We've been told that we'll get food and essentials delivered to our door, but they don't always come - I went out to the shops once, even though we're not supposed to, because I had no other choice."

No good mocking those who are prepared, at least we won't be the ones going out potentially infecting others to get food.

TroysMammy · 29/02/2020 12:15

I've never seen so many people in Tesco wearing gloves whilst shopping today.

WaterSheep · 29/02/2020 12:18

I went out to the shops once, even though we're not supposed to, because I had no other choice.

No other choice, what about online shopping or asking a friend / family member. So irresponsible.

NeurotrashWarrior · 29/02/2020 12:19

Can I clarify; if you are tested and have it but show no symptoms can you pass it on? (Ie, if you weren't tested you'd have no idea you'd had it.)

This is quite key as if you can pass it on and don't know you've been infected/ have the virus there's no point closing anywhere.

ofwarren · 29/02/2020 12:19

Coronavirus updates:

  • Spain: 8 new cases
  • Japan: 6 new cases
  • Taiwan: 5 new cases
  • Germany: 4 new cases
  • Austria: 3 new cases
  • Netherlands: 2 new cases
  • 3rd case in the country of Georgia; gov't closing schools for 1 extra week

@Wehttam Do you not think that if the virus was going round and round (reinfecting people until they die) we might have seen an increase in the Chinese figures? Their figures are going down, not up. Both new cases and deaths.

I can think of two reports of 'reinfection' and doubt was cast on whether it was simply the same infection or the unreliability of testing. There is zero hard evidence.

Your determination that this is 'the end of life as we know it' and 'the start of civil unrest' and so on is pure fantasy and not based on any sort of evidence. It's unhelpful to everyone reading it and you aren't doing your own mental health any favours either.

I have a feeling we have had this discussion before under your previous username so I'm going to step away now.

MyFavouriteColourIsBlue · 29/02/2020 12:22

@NeurotrashWarrior yes you can have it without symptoms and still pass it on.

Parker231 · 29/02/2020 12:23

Have just been to Tesco’s - no gaps on the shelves, no one wearing masks or gloves and plenty of slots available for deliveries.

LarkDescending · 29/02/2020 12:23

NeurotrashWarrior the man who unwittingly caused the French ski chalet, Mallorca and Brighton outbreak had no symptoms. He was only tested because he had been at a conference in Singapore which was linked to a cluster of cases. It turned out he was positive, and had infected 11 other people before he was diagnosed.

woodencoffeetable · 29/02/2020 12:23

the dutch new cases are the same family as the other 2 amsterdam cases.
they have been to italy during their half term.

interestingly it looks like the woman tested positive without symptoms, whilst the smallest dc had symptoms but tested negative at first.
the family is now quarantined at home.

EgonSpengler2020 · 29/02/2020 12:24

@ghostlycurtains

I know it's serious but I've been reading these threads a lot and some of you talk as if it's Ebola.

What's worse, a virus that kills 50% of infected people but only infects 1% of the worlds population or a virus that infects 50% of the worlds population but only kills 1% of the infected people?!

NeurotrashWarrior · 29/02/2020 12:25

How is containment going to work when this actually gets going?

In these early stages potentially it does and relates spread so a vaccine can be developed but I can't see the point thereafter.

And stuffing 40 kids into a classroom increases be chance of them all getting it if one is asymptomatic.

AvocadoOwl · 29/02/2020 12:26

That's good news @Parker231. We usually do our weekly shop on a Sunday but DH headed out this morning just in case things ramped up before then to shut me up about it rather than having any concern himself about shelves being empty.

Parker231 · 29/02/2020 12:26

Asked DH , a GP if he is worried about the virus - he said no but he’s getting annoyed at people ignoring NHS advice and trying to make appointments at the surgery because their next door neighbour has been to Italy skiing or they think they have the virus. Everyone needs to calm down and wait for any changes to NHS/government advice.

Quartz2208 · 29/02/2020 12:27

Egon the rise with Ebola/bird flu is that they become like this and affect high numbers and kill high numbers. Ebola becoming airborne is the scariest.

This at least is lower

SansaSnark · 29/02/2020 12:27

@NeurotrashWarrior

Yes, you can pass the virus on even if you aren't showing symptoms. However, as it's passed on via droplets, you're less likely to infect others if you're not coughing or sneezing. You'd be most likely to pass it on to others you had close contact with e.g. sharing drink/food with a friend, or kissing a partner etc.

So, for example, you'd be unlikely to pass it on to someone you just passed in the street, but e.g. a teenager might pass it onto a friend at school if they were in close contact all day. This is one reason why encouraging people to self isolate after coming back from high-risk reasons is important.

NeurotrashWarrior · 29/02/2020 12:28

Yes I think that's my point san.

EmmaBridgewater20 · 29/02/2020 12:29

@mrshectic WTAF closing schools, lockdown etc. Drastic, not allowing flights from the worst it countries I.e. South Korea or at the very least being told to self isolate and been required to do a mandatory test at 14+ days sensible and easy.

I just don’t understand how this containment strategy works if what mrsh relative has told them is correct. And the information I posted about the crew and carrier been allowed to bring passengers back who’d been at the hotel in T’rife with the Italian man. Those crew haven’t been told not to work!?!

NeurotrashWarrior · 29/02/2020 12:30

Eg, Kids chew pencils, of the virus survives on surfaces for a long time, that's going to be one way it transmits.

So at this stage I can see the point of school closures.
