This video from lovely Dr John Campbell, is very informative and in part reassuring he has suggested a lower CFR of 1% based on the figures he is constantly analysing

Are there any issues with people returning from Tenerife, not in area of hotel? Nothing on guidelines. We are off to spend weekend with friends who have been.out there, partner says I am getting paranoid about it and trying not to worry but difficult.

WhiteWall1 · 29/02/2020 11:37

mrshectic last night on the thread people were talking about what the government should be doing and I think the airport issues are definitely one thing. Why on earth are we still not testing people when they arrive?

janemaster · 29/02/2020 11:37

Yes a friend arrived back on a flight from Singapore and there was not even any information given to passengers at Heathrow. At Singapore officials were taking temperatures and telling them to self isolate.
I think our Government are just ignoring this and hoping it goes away.

Humina · 29/02/2020 11:40

Brother has just come back from Gatwick. No testing or screening going on there either. (He was travelling from a currently unaffected area and was screened at their end on arrival, but not departure).

Frazzled2207 · 29/02/2020 11:40

Testing everyone if they arrive from Korea/Italy just not practical. That could be tens of thousands a day. However at some point there may have to be the "quarantine for 14 days if you are coming from xyz rule" which would dissuade the vast majority from travelling

hoochymamgu · 29/02/2020 11:40

@woodencoffeetable thanks for the link to the who guidelines.

Not wanting to be alarmist but early symptoms of infection with HIV are flu-like (although much less severe than the coronavirus symptoms). It isn't for up to ten years later that the most serious effects i.e. AIDS emerges.

This is basically the definition of alarmist.

The government have specifically said that they are considering temporarily removing health and safety legislation re: class sizes

Cynically, I wonder if it's a backdoor way of getting parents used to larger class sizes long term. If your child was in a class of 50 last year, suddenly 35 doesn't look so bad!

I wouldn't say that the reason for changing the rules is so that parents get used to bigger class sizes, but I would doubt this governments willingness to reinstate the rules to the same levels afterwards.

hoochymamgu · 29/02/2020 11:42

I had a child with swine flu in my class (Y1) we did not close the school.

janemaster · 29/02/2020 11:43

@Frazzled2207 But not even to give any information and this is what you should do advice? If nothing else it sends out the message our Government is not doing anything.

Abraid2 · 29/02/2020 11:43

The idea that the government would prioritise the economy over saving lives is awful.

It's not awful. We need the economy to work because it pays for things we need. Like the NHS. If the share market continues to crash, people like me will have much smaller earnings and/or pensions (self-employed) and possibly need state help we wouldn't otherwise have needed. If people lose their jobs, that has very serious consequences for them and their communities. And they won't be paying tax, either.

So money that could have benefited the country will be gone.

I have an 82-year-old immuno-compromised and recently widowed mother. But she realises that looking at the greater benefit to the greater number of people, her needs can't necessarily take priority to the benefit of the far greater number of people who need life to carry on.

Wehttam · 29/02/2020 11:44

FYI

Start watching China, a few areas are allegedly slowly going back to work and trying to resume a sense of normality. Should they have to close again and restart containment procedures then I think it will be a sign that this thing is not as it seems...

Frazzled2207 · 29/02/2020 11:45

@janemaster
Yes totally agree on that front.

janemaster · 29/02/2020 11:45

I suspect classes will generally not be large for long as parents who can will just withdraw their kids. That leaves kids whose parents have to work and can't work from home.

janemaster · 29/02/2020 11:46

Shares will recover, the economy will recover. We have been through much worse. So yes I think prioritising the economy is short term political expediency, nothing more. Johnson looks out for number 1.

ExhaustedGrinch · 29/02/2020 11:48

Any others here who wish we had the option to remove children from school without penalty?

I really wish they would do this. It would mean children might at least be able to sit with an empty seat either side of them and they can take greater care with supervising hygiene. Primary school kids can be germ ridden little grots at the best of times! I would happily take mine out and also have my sisters two so she could continue to work.

peoplepleaser1 · 29/02/2020 11:48

A virologist on radio 4 yesterday said temperature testing is not as helpful as many people think because if someone has taken paracetamol this will reduce their temperature, and many infected people have no temperature.

No bun fight please, I'm just posting what was said.....

Parker231 · 29/02/2020 11:52

@TheGirlFromStoryville - if they close schools for two months who will look after the children? Everyone I know has both parents who work, not necessarily can do from home and employers are expecting them in work - otherwise they won’t be paid.

ofwarren · 29/02/2020 11:52

2 new cases of #Coronavirus in #Netherlands

Wehttam · 29/02/2020 11:55

I would imagine if they close the schools for 2 months the parents would have to look after their children no? Just a guess though...

IceWings · 29/02/2020 11:57

As someone mentioned it will be down to last man standing
It’s hard enough to cope with 30 in the class. It would be impossible to handle 60, especially if you’re running between two rooms. Teachers who are dumped in the shit like that are likely to just go off sick.

Also I wish they’d decide what the symptoms are! My GP has a poster up mentioning sore throat and runny nose, but other sources are saying only 5% have those symptoms and it’s more likely to be flu if you have them.

ExhaustedGrinch · 29/02/2020 11:58

if they close schools for two months who will look after the children?

Whichever parent has the most essential job could work? Grandparents or other relatives could (should) chip in, friends could help each other out by rotating childcare etc

mondaynoon · 29/02/2020 12:00

I wish there was more clarity about the symptoms too. I had a sore throat after returning from Italy and 111 said it wasn't a symptom. There was a Professor in Australia who said that for most people it will be a mild cold. How could we know if we have it if that is the case?

AvocadoOwl · 29/02/2020 12:02

Start watching China, a few areas are allegedly slowly going back to work and trying to resume a sense of normality. Should they have to close again and restart containment procedures then I think it will be a sign that this thing is not as it seems...

An increase in cases is expected and doesn't imply anything more sinister than the already well understood fact that it's a highly contagious virus. Only a small percentage of the Chinese population have been infected which means many people are vulnerable. Re opening businesses and schools will be a real balancing act for the Chinese with some trial and error.

@Wehttam you'd get on very well with @YoursTunbridgeWells, assuming you aren't the same namechanged poster. There is no evidence whatsoever that we are all going to be trapped forever in an endless reinfection cycle.

Banana0pancakes · 29/02/2020 12:03

Just read the guy in Swansea caught it on a ski trip and has been socialising with friends and family all week. Also said he was airlifted to hospital on Thursday night. I really hope that's a containment measure and not indicative of his condition.

Wehttam · 29/02/2020 12:05

What needs to start happening NOW is the community coming together. There will be a lot of people left behind in the coming weeks and months, people will be scared, anxious, depressed, everyone needs to be nice to one another.

I expect the trivialities in life of ‘the ExMIL this and DSS that’ will quickly spiral into insignificance, we should put our differences aside and learn to tolerate one another and be nice to eachother. Being a selfish Moran will get you nowhere.

Social unrest will start very quickly once our precious way of life is disrupted.

Remember the riots in 2011? They will be like a Sunday picnic if this goes bad.
